  • Patent number: 6102234
Abstract: A closure for a filling tube of a motor vehicle with a swivel closure cover is arranged outside of a center opening of the filling tube in the tank and pivots around a swivel axis positioned in a plane perpendicular to the center axis of the opening. The closure is pre-stressed by a spring in a direction counter to the insertion movement of a filling pipe of a fuel supply nozzle. The closure is supported on a lower surrounding opening edge of the opening in the closed position to form a seal. An upstanding swivel facilitating element that can be contacted by the filling pipe is arranged on the closure. The closure cover is swiveled in a force-saving manner as a result of this swivel facilitating element.

  • Patent number: 6079584
Abstract: A fuel cap (10) and filler neck fitment (14) for receiving the fuel cap. The fuel cap includes an outer member (18) and an inner closure assembly (20) with seal. The cap and fitment both include lugs (28, 36) which interengage when the cap is moved into a closing position to pressurize the seal determined by an improved overriding ratchet arrangement. During removal of the cap, the outer member moves against a spring action for a predetermined arc before the inner closure assembly is moved to disengage the seal. When the seal is disengaged, the spring action takes up the relative motion. Once removed, the cap is retained by an improved tether (74) assembly. The outer member is connected to the inner annular assembly by an improved structural arrangement which allows the outer member to separate under crash impact.

  • Patent number: 5992669
Abstract: A fuel tank cap structure and method of manufacturing which prevents a parting line formed on a cover member in the process of injection molding from being undesirably shaven. The fuel tank cap includes a casing body and a cover member that is rotatable in one direction relative to the casing body via a ratchet mechanism when a torque of or above a predetermined level is applied to the cover member. The cover member has fitting projections that are held by an outer ring member of the casing body. A slide mold is used for manufacturing the cover member having the fitting projections that are undercut in the injection molding. This causes a parting line to be formed on a top wall of the cover member. Anti-shaving projections formed at substantially the same height as that of the parting line prevent the parting line from being slid against the outer ring member and shaven.

The fuel tank cap has a casing body and a cover member with four discharge projections for discharging static electricity to a filler neck of a fuel tank. The four discharge projections are arranged in a third radial direction that has an angle of 45 degrees with respect to both a first radial direction and a second radial direction. The first radial direction, in which a handle member of the cover member is arranged, gives the maximum contraction of the cover member, whereas the second radial direction gives the minimum contraction of the cover member. • Patent number: 5816430
Abstract: A jerrycan holds liquid fuel. A cap for the jerrycan includes an air vent valve assembly having an umbrella-shaped check valve. The check valve is sensitive to a pressure differential between an interior of the jerrycan and the atmosphere. As fuel is dispensed from the jerrycan, a volume of an air chamber within the jerrycan increases, thereby decreasing the pressure in the jerrycan and creating a vacuum. The vacuum causes the rate at which fuel is dispensed from the jerrycan to decrease. The check valve dislodges when the pressure within the jerrycan becomes less than the pressure of the atmosphere and additional air is introduced into the jerrycan. The air fills the expanded volume of the air chamber, thereby increasing the pressure, eliminating the vacuum and causing the rate at which fuel is dispensed to increase.

The closing part is adjustable through an adjusting device by actuating element which opens filling opening when rotated to the open position, and which closes filling opening when rotated to the closed position.

  • Patent number: 5732841
Abstract: A fuel cap and filler neck fitment for receiving the fuel cap. The fuel cap includes an outer member and an inner closure assembly with seal. The cap and fitment both include lugs which interengage when the cap is moved into a closing position to pressurize the seal determined by an improved overriding ratchet arrangement. During removal of the cap, the outer member moves against a spring action for a predetermined arc before the inner closure assembly is moved to disengage the seal. When the seal is disengaged, the spring action takes up the relative motion. Once removed, the cap is retained by an improved tether assembly. The outer member is connected to the inner annular assembly by an improved structural arrangement which allows the outer member to separate under crash impact.

  • Patent number: 5725033
Abstract: A filling system for robot-capable filling of a motor vehicle with fuel has a filler nozzle and a tank filler neck, with a docking extension provided with a central opening being provided on the neck on the filling side of the vehicle. The extension is rotatable by an upper section around the axis of symmetry to open and close a tank closure. The filler nozzle is dockable by its outlet end to form a positive connection between the filler nozzle and the docking extension. When the filler nozzle is ready for filling, positive elements distributed around the circumference of the filler nozzle and the docking extension mesh positively with one another. In order to achieve a simple docking of the filler nozzle on the filler neck of the vehicle fuel tank for a filling that is always functionally reliable and unimpeded, the positive elements of one docking partner are radially movable and actuatable in the radial direction fluidically, and the positive elements of the other docking partner are rigid.

Abstract: A vent-valve assembly is provided for use in a filler neck fuel cap. The vent-valve assembly includes a valve housing, a vacuum-relief valve subassembly which is spring-biased within the housing to channel ambient air and fuel vapor through the valve housing, and a pressure-relief valve subassembly which rides upon the vacuum-relief valve subassembly. The vacuum-relief valve subassembly includes a vacuum-relief spring and a vacuum-relief valve. The vacuum-relief valve has a valve member which rests upon the vacuum-relief spring and guide legs which depend from the valve member around the vacuum-relief spring. Flanges or feet extend out from the guide legs and engage the valve housing when the pressure-relief valve subassembly is removed from the housing.
