  • Patent number: 4458823
Abstract: A fuel cap has a cover-handgripping portion and a threaded closure portion, which portions are maintained in assembly by a ring member. The ring member has integrally molded therewith a plurality of outwardly extending flexible fingers in a hinged relationship. The closure portion is inserted in the ring member prior to assembly within the handgripping portion. At assembly, the fingers of the ring member pivot inwardly at the hinge position to become engaged with an annular groove formed in the handgripping portion. The movement of the fingers results in an inner portion of the ring member being displaced to form a support shelf for the threaded closure. Engagement of the fingers with the groove portion of the handgrip prevents removal of the ring and therefore the closure member from the handgripping portion.

Abstract: In order to place a sealing cap, which is to be placed in particular on a filler neck of a gasoline tank, on the neck so as to preserve the seal with little actuation force but so that it seals securely, the sealing cap is equipped with a turning lifting apparatus (24, 43) which effects a pressing of the sealing ring (4) at the free neck end (5) when the turning stop (26) of the sealing cap encounters the counter stop (27) of the filler neck (1). A pressing member (23) is displaced in the axial direction against the resistence of a compression spring (25) in the turning stop (26) via the turning lifting apparatus and simultaneously moves a radial outer collar which is coupled with the turning handle (2) in the displacement direction and which is contacted by the sealing ring (4) against the free neck end (5), whereby the sealing ring is pressed together. The inner and outer lips both include axially inner and outer surfaces. The web portion includes a radially inwardly facing surface and a radially outwardly facing surface. As the O-ring is projected axially into the annular space, the axially inner surface of the inner lip contacts the second surface and is urged axially outwardly in a wiping action. The axially outward wiping movement of the inner lip causes a twisting or rolling of the ring such that the web radially inner surface is urged radially outwardly at its axially inner extent and is urged radially inwardly at its axially outer extent against the first surface.
