Patent number: 4346824Abstract: An improved ice dispensing mechanism for an ice hopper is characterized by a door or gate which is moved by a variable force to cover and uncover an opening in the hopper. A lever is pivotally mounted at one end and connected at an opposite end with the door, and a solenoid plunger is coupled through a spring with a medial portion of the lever, such that actuation of the solenoid retracts the plunger to extend the spring in one embodiment, and to compress the spring in another, to exert a variable force on the lever to pivot the lever and open the door. Should the door be stuck closed because of ice pressure, by virtue of the spring minimum retraction forces are initially encountered by the plunger when the solenoid is initially energized and the plunger fully extended. This enables the plunger to move into the solenoid, whereupon increased forces are exerted on the plunger by the solenoid, and therefore on the spring, to free the door.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1980Date of Patent: August 31, 1982Assignee: Remcor Products CompanyInventors: Benjamin D. Patent number: 4262824Abstract: A pivoting permanent-magnet armature of an electromagnet forming part of a controller to limit the flow of an intravenous solution through a casette to a patient. The electromagnet may have an E-frame with the permanent magnet pivoting between two positions about a point lying on the extension of the electromagnet's middle leg. In one position, one pole of the permanent magent contacts one side leg of the E-frame to open the casette inlet and maintain the outlet in a closed configuration. In the other position, the permanent magnet's other pole contacts the other side of the E-frame to close the inlet, open the outlet, and allow fluid to flow to the patient. A gap should remain between the permanent magnet and the E-frame's middle leg to avoid their grinding together and a concomitant increase of friction due to the presence of resulting particles. Preventing contact between the permanent magnet and the electromagnet's middle leg also avoids the formation of the magnetic shunt between the two at that point.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1980Date of Patent: April 21, 1981Assignee: Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc.Inventor: Orest Hrynewycz

Patent number: 4230244Abstract: Improvements in infusion controlling apparatus used in limiting the flow rate of an intravenous solution to a patient. The improvements provide coarse and fine orientations of a casette through which the solution passes relative to a controller which valves the casette's inlet and outlet to provide measured volumes of fluid. The coarse alignment device includes spaced apart metal sections which grasp onto the casette and move it towards the controller's valving members. As the casette reaches the valving members, protuberances on the controller fit into indentations on the casette, as the fine adjustment. The indentations into which the protuberances fit form part of the casette's base section of plastic notwithstanding the location of a cover slip between these two items. The valving members couple to a rocker arm which pivots about a point located at its middle and has magnetic poles at its ends.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1979Date of Patent: October 28, 1980Assignee: Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc.Inventor: Nick Zissimopoulos

Patent number: 4226343Abstract: Valving apparatus designed for use in a remote-controlled beer-dispensing system. The apparatus includes a valve having a plunger selectively movable between opened and closed conditions, and a shiftable lever for controlling the position of the plunger. A pneumatic ram is coupled to the lever through a clevis. Upon supply of a pressurized gas to the ram, the clevis impacts the lever, shifting the latter to produce movement of the plunger from its closed to its opened condition. Upon exhaust of gas from the ram, a spring contained in the ram initiates return movement of the lever to produce movement of the plunger from its opened toward its closed condition, primarily under the influence of the spring. The upstream portion of the plunger has a surface which is exposed to and actable on by fluid flowing through the valve--this surface cooperating with the spring to complete movement of the plunger from its opened toward its closed condition.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1978Date of Patent: October 7, 1980Assignee: Custom Systems Associates, Inc.Inventor: James L. Patent number: 4226344Abstract: A dispensing valve mechanism which includes means for automatically maintaning a constant flow of fluid through a flow channel under varying fluid source pressure utilizes a piston movable within a chamber in response to fluid pressure to regulate the available flow area of a single outlet port in the chamber. The piston is sized to permit fluid flow around the periphery of the piston, and may have an axial flow path therethrough to serve as the primary flow path through the valve mechanism. A spring yieldably opposes axial movement of the piston that would tend to decrease the effective area of the chamber outlet port. An adjustment screw is carred in the valve body for adjusting the force exerted by the spring. The valve is particularly suited for use in liquid dispensing apparatus. The valve mechanism is operated by a pivoted arm which includes a projection thereof that engages an electrical switch which causes a solenoid to open the valve.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1979Date of Patent: October 7, 1980Assignee: Booth, Inc.Inventors: Jack J. Patent number: 4215802Abstract: A needle valve nozzle is employed in a hot melt adhesive gun used to apply thermoplastic adhesive. Actuation of a trigger mechanism supplies pressurized gas to a nozzle chamber which urges the nozzle in an outward direction to an open position, the needle remaining stationary during operation of the nozzle. Deactuation of the trigger mechanism stops the flow of pressurized gas to the chamber and a vent allows the pressurized gas to flow from the chamber, permitting a spring-biasing mechanism to return the nozzle to a closed position. Pressure on the adhesive can also be employed to urge the nozzle to an open position.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1978Date of Patent: August 5, 1980Assignee: Ornsteen Chemicals, Inc.Inventor: Robert L.
