    Abstract: The discharge rate of a solid particulate material from a storage hopper is increased beyond the rate attainable by gravity flow along through the introduction of a pressurized gas into a plenum that lies over the discharge hopper. In one embodiment, a first pipe extends vertically downward from a storage hopper, and a second pipe of larger diameter is fitted over the lower end of the first pipe so that an annular plenum is formed between the pipes. A pressurized gas is injected into this plenum and results in an increase in the discharge rate. The discharge rate can be controlled by altering the pressure of the injected gas, and the flow can be rendered intermittent by opening and closing a gate valve at the outlet of the discharge hopper.

The door panels are mounted in parallel track members with cut-away portions and a member extending upwardly from the bottom edge of the door panel when the door panel is in its uppermost position to hold the lower portion of the door panels. The latches include hinges movable from a location over an L-shaped flange on the longitudinally extending drive plate and away from said longitudinally extending plate and the latch cam may be moved to engage the hinge and press it against said longitudinally extending plate for connecting said drive means to said door panel.

At least the slide gate members for opening and closing the inlet are withdrawn from their inlet closing position into a respective outwardly closed or sealed chamber for making it easier to keep the container pressurized. The seals between the chamber entrance slots and the respective slide gate member are not required to be precision seals because any material that may pass into these outwardly closed or sealed chambers is easily removed again.

    Abstract: A slide gate assembly for closure of a discharge opening in a container for bulk material which includes a continuous flexible seal residing in an inverted U-shaped chamber around the perimeter of the discharge opening. In addition, the seal has compressible ribs in the bottom side for engagement with the upper side of the slide gate. The seal lip or flap provides a squeegee action on the upper side of the slide gate during insertion and removal of the slide gate which insures that the upper surface of the slide gate outside of the seal lip is free of material so that a positive seal between the discharge opening and the slide gate is effected when the upper surface of the slide gate is pressed against the protruding ribs on the bottom side of the seal.

Rotation of the operating shafts causes movement of the rods and valve plates. Retainer brackets are mounted on the rack structures and include retaining portions spaced and parallel to the rack structures. The pinion portions are supported between the rack structures and the retaining portions to maintain intermeshed engagement of the pinion portions with the rack structures. Stop portions are provided on the bracket which prevent movement of the valve plates beyond the fully open and fully closed positions.

In order to put the closure into its dispensing position, the rocker arm must be depressed at the same time that the cover is rotated. Rotation of the cover to the dispensing position uncovers the dispensing orifice.

    Abstract: A tundish for use in casting a ribbon of crystalline or coarse grain polycrystalline material, having a support for a hopper containing molten material, the hopper having a bottom plate and three side wall plates and a top plate, each made of a material which will not interact with the molten material contained within the space defined by the bottom plate, side wall plates and top plate, to impart any significant impurity into the molten material, and wherein the top plate slants downwardly towards the bottom plate to form an elongated orifice through which molten material is extruded onto a cool surface where crystallization of a ribbon of material occurs. As disclosed, the top plate is movable with respect to the bottom plate to change the thickness of the orifice. Also as disclosed, the top plate slides in a slot in each of two opposed side walls and is of a length such that it forms with the third side wall an opening into which molten material is added to the tundish.

    Abstract: A sliding gate valve of the type in which refractory gates are sequentially disposed in operative position beneath the pour opening from a teeming vessel, such as a tundish, is effective to controllably throttle the metal flow stream from the vessel. Operator means for positioning the gates in order to control the degree of throttling of the flow stream are independent from the operator means for disposing the gates in their working position within the valve mechanism whereby the flow stream can be terminated without adjusting the throttling configuration of the valve. Means are provided, when the valve employs a pour tube attachment, for selectively changing gates and pour tubes in unison, or independently from one another. The valve mechanism and its replaceable refractory components are designed for the supply of fluids for cooling these members and for the injection of fluid reactants into the metal pouring process.

    Abstract: Conventional dispensers are often crude containers with wheels which dispense asphalt by tipping the container and then spreading same manually or by chains or utilizing a relatively inaccurate feed mechanism within the container. The present device is a wheel mounted container insulated to retain heat and thus maintaining the asphalt or similar material in a fluid condition. Adjustable metering valves control the flow and hence the volume of the material dispensed either in a mopping or glazing mode or in a ribbon mode which is also adjustable for width. The machine can be placed in a filling and transport position supported on two main wheels or can be rotated to a dispensing position supported upon the same two main wheels and a third support wheel which also controls the clearance of the dispensing valves from the floor.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a cooler for granular products, essentially consisting of a cooling reservoir, a product inlet at the top, and two grids for the discharge of granules, which grids are movable relatively to each other. In the cooling reservoir a current of air is generated by means of a blower, the cooling air being drawn in through the granule discharge grid and being passed through the cooling reservoir countercurrently relatively to the product to be cooled. The air inlet for the blower is disposed in the top part of the cooling reservoir adjacent to the granule inlet lock. Any fines present in the granular product are exhaused direct by the blower. For this purpose a controllable opening is provided in the suction tube of the blower for drawing in secondary air. The product discharge grid is of such construction that in the closed condition it is permeable to air without permitting the product to be cooled to flow out of the cooling reservoir.
