  • Patent number: 5480076
Abstract: A retractable clothes hanger (10) having a pair of garment support arms that can be positioned in either a normal, extended position or a retracted position. When the arms are retracted, the clothes hanger can be easily inserted and removed from a narrow necked garment such as a turtleneck sweater. The first and second garment support arms are integrally attached to a first and second inner section respectfully with each inner section having a first and second engagement end. The two engagement ends, which are designed to rotatably intermesh, include a plurality of hook bores that when intermeshed, a notch is formed. A hinge spring is then inserted into the notch which normally biases the two garment support arms in their extended position. Into the plurality of bores is inserted the hanger support hook which in addition to functioning as a hanger hook also rotatably secures the two garment support arms. Two push nuts are positioned to secure the hook to the two garment arms.

Abstract: An expandable garment hanger with which the invention is concerned has a body (1), a hook (2) on the body to suspend the hanger and a pair of movable arms (3,4), slidably mounted on the body. The arms are arranged to move in opposite directions. A locking device (8,9) is located on the body (1) of the hanger so as to lock the movable arms relative to the body. The locking device is movable along a path parallel to the path along which the arms are movable. A biasing device, preferably a spring (27), is provided for biasing the locking device (9,9) against movement in one direction so that when the arm of the hanger is set and locked in position the arms of the hanger are movable against the biasing force of the spring (27). The hanger conveniently supports garments of varying waist widths and maintains the hanger at the desired widths once the garment is mounted on the hanger but also allows the garment to be removed from the hanger by a small inward force applied to the end of the arm.

  • Patent number: 5052599
Abstract: The adjustable clothes hanger includes two divergent shoulder portions connected to a crossbar at their ends thereof to be assembled with a pair of generally elongated tubular-shaped movable parts with an open channel at a bottom wherein the open channels of each said movable parts are closed at the inner ends thereof to provide a stopping device as well as strength and stability. The movable parts slide manually. The slidable fittings are loose enough to slide easily, yet tight enough to secure desired position. The shoulder width of the hanger is thereby changed by the expansion or contraction of the movable parts. The hanger thus accommodates a variety of garment sizes. The adjustable principle can also be applied to a singular set of divergent shoulder portions with tubular-shaped movable parts. The adjustable principle can also be applied to two or three cross bar hangers, wherein U-shaped extensions provide for expansion and contraction of the hanger width.

  • Patent number: 4673114
Abstract: Each hanger arm includes a stub shaft with a locking notch immediately adjacent. Elongated extender arms, one for each hanger arm, each include a hollow end which can be received onto a locking stub shaft and have detent parts to be snapped into the adjacent locking notch. To release an extender arm from the hanger body, it is swung outwardly and upwardly a slight amount, which removes the detent from the notch allowing the extender arm to be pulled off the hanger body stub shaft. The outer end of an extender arm may be provided with a similar stub shaft enabling a second extender arm to be releasably locked to a first extender arm providing further total arm length.
