  • Patent number: 5738264
Abstract: Web feed apparatus, for example in web printing and folding apparatus, has a pair of opposing rollers, one (28) on a fixed axis and one (22) laterally movable to define an adjustable nip gap between their peripheries. The gap is automatically set and adjusted by a setting screw (4) driven by a servo motor (60) with rotation of the screw monitors by a potentiometer sensor (64). A stop collar (52) on the screw limits axial displacement thereof to determine the set nip gap and a spring (50) urges the rollers towards each other but permits displacement under overload conditions. A rectilinear sensor (54) senses said conditions by monitoring relative displacement of the stop collar and a programmable control system processes signals from the sensors and operates the servo motor accordingly.

  • Patent number: 5370290
Abstract: A pusher system (12) extracts a wire (11) from a reservoir (10) and feeds the wire through a wire guide (13) to a puller system (14). The puller system then feeds the wire (11) through a tip (15) to the welding operation represented by an arc (16) and a work piece (17). The pusher system (12) has a motor (20) adjusted so as to feed the wire (11) at the desired rate. A pair of rollers (22), which are driven by the motor (20), are designed to slip on the wire (11) if the wire becomes jammed or blocked. The puller system (14) has a limited torque motor (30). The limited torque motor (30) drives a pair of rollers (32) which firmly grip the wire (11) and do not slip on the wire (11). If the wire (11) becomes blocked or jammed then the motor (30) will stall. The combination of the pusher system (12) and the puller system (14) provides a wire feeder which does not damage the wire (11) and which does not cause birdnesting if the wire is jammed or blocked.

  • Patent number: 5343934
Abstract: Multiple pairs of pinch rolls are used to advance a rod product along a pathway following a continuously casting and rolling system. Each pinch roll pair exerts a force normal to the rod of less than the amount necessary to substantially degrade the yield strength characteristics of the finished rod. Multiple driven pinch roll pairs cooperate to advance the rod by compressive engagement and accomplish the work of one or two pairs of pinch rolls to minimize work hardening and/or plastic deformation, which can result in an increase in yield strength. Yield strength characteristics are thus improved while the continuous rod product is still advanced and guided at very high speed along a pathway from a horizontal to a vertical direction.

  • Patent number: 4364505
Abstract: The invention relates to a hydraulically actuated feed roll lift mechanism for feeds utilized to feed strip stock into a machine, such as a mechanical press. Regulated hydraulic pressure acting against a piston that is connected to one of the feed rolls through a yoke forces the feed roll against the stock to grip the stock and cause an increment thereof to be fed into the press when the rolls are rotated. A roll opening cam, which is connected to the press crankshaft, advances a small piston to displace oil against the other side of the piston while the stock is at rest to thereby separate the rolls during the time that the dies are in contact with the stock in the press. The time at which roll separation is initiated is controlled by adjusting the angular position of the cam on its shaft, as by releasing a frictional lock mechanism, rotating the cam to the desired position, and then again locking it in place.

Abstract: A magnetic card transport subsystem for an electronic typewriter comprises a reversible drive roll and a coacting pinch roll which form a nip through which a magnetic card is passed. The drive roll and pinch roll coact to move the card in opposite directions. The pinch roll is so mounted that it can rock and be self-leveling to permit the full width of the pinch roll to engage the card and uniformly distribute pressure thereto. A mechanism for adjusting the pinch roll for alignment purposes is also provided.
