  • Patent number: 4421499
Abstract: An improved film tube forming shoe includes a brake edge having a configuration which is related to the diameter of the shoe, to the film width, and to the diameter of a product to be wrapped in the tube. The shoe is provided with outwardly directed pressurized fluid ports in the brake edge to provide an air cushion for the film as it is drawn through an acute angle around the brake edge into the shoe. The fluid also cleans the edge and reduces accumulation of foreign matter thereon. To promote accurate film tracking through the shoe, it is rotatable in response to changes in the position of an edge of the film before it enters the shoe. Methods are provided for forming the shoe, and brake edge, without trial and error, for wrapping products of known diameter, and for wrapping articles.

  • Patent number: 4385716
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling an outgoing web leaving an air cushion turning bar, which enables a convenient transport of longitudinally curved webs over such air turning bar. The apparatus comprises at least one axially displaceable roller adapted to be moved laterally upon a deviation in the web to bring the same to its outgoing path, and a second roller capable of bodily tilting movement and preferably axial movement as well, to differentially lengthen the path of the web edge margin remote from the direction of deviation.

  • Patent number: 4324488
Abstract: A paper mask produces even width borders on bordered photographic prints even if the unexposed photographic print paper is misaligned, angularly mistracking, or wandering in alignment through roll feeding, or if the width of the paper varies. The paper mask apparatus includes a base which is mounted on the paper deck of the printer and front and rear guides which are movably mounted to the base and have masking lips which overhang the longitudinal edges of the print paper. The front and rear guides are generally parallel to one another and are urged toward one another by bias springs. A separate masking frame of the desired print size is mounted to one of the two guides and moves with that guide to define transverse masking edges.

  • Patent number: 4291825
Abstract: A system for positioning a web of material as it enters and passes through a course for treating the web, as in a printing press, is disclosed. The edges of the web are scanned by infrared sensing devices which are connected by various electrical circuits to a tilt mechanism contacting the web, and both the scanning devices and the tilt mechanism may be synchronized, or manually controlled, to direct the web through the press. A broad diameter channel of infrared radiation is utilized in the scanners. The relationship of the web to its desired path and the correcting actions of the system may be continuously read in terms of actual deviation changes on a display panel. The tilt rollers and the scanners may be automatically centered on a fixed reference point in preparing the web for its course through the press. The system includes correlation of the tramming of the tilt rollers to continued position sensing of the web by the infrared scanners.

  • Patent number: 4200246
Abstract: An improved conveying device for conveying a thin web through a station in both directions with the desired registry characterized by a supply device for storing a reel of the thin web, a guiding device for guiding the thin web through the station and a take up or receiving device for rewinding the web with the take up or receiving device and the driving means being controlled so that the take up device does not apply any tension to the web at the station. In order to determine the exact amount of the web passing through the station a meter or measuring device is utilized and to ensure proper alignment of the web, the guiding means includes rollers continually holding the edge of the web against a lateral guide member. Due to the control and the use of the meter device, the web may be moved back and forth through the station to allow processing laterally offset portions of the web and maintain the registry between the various laterally offset portions.
