Patent number: 8794856Abstract: In a method or device to sample a web movement, an incremental encoder translates the web movement into two phase-offset output signals. A quadrature decoder generates first and second digital output signals with two respective signal levels. The first output signal is designated as a forward signal and the second output signal is designated as a backward signal. An evaluation circuit outputs a control signal and has a first counter that counts a signal change of the forward signal and subtracts from the count a signal change of the backward signal. Patent number: 6745976Abstract: A tape roller bearing is provided that prevents the development of an air film between the roller surface and the tape. The spool surface is made from porous material so that air flows through the spool surface. The porous material vents air uniformly over the roller surface, and the tape remains in direct contact with the roller, even at high speed. The speed of the tapes movement can be determined by measuring the speed of movement of the spool surface using an encoder disk and an encoder module.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 2003Date of Patent: June 8, 2004Assignee: Mountain Engineering II, Inc.Inventor: Jack L. Publication number: 20040074942Abstract: A system and method for controlling the width of a web material supplied to a machine by adjusting the tension of the web material. An operator defines a target web width via an input device. The input device generates a reference signal representative of the target web width. A sensing device senses the width of the web material supplied to the machine and generates a feedback signal representative of the sensed width. A control circuit compares the feedback and reference signals and generates a tensioning signal as a function of the comparison. A tensioning device is responsive to tensioning signal for adjusting web tension.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 17, 2002Publication date: April 22, 2004Applicant: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: John Sorebo, Gregory J. Patent number: 6659006Abstract: A tension control device for a printing press having an adjustment roller, with a web of the press passing from a supply roll of the web to the adjustment roller. Means are provided for measuring the tension on opposed sides of the web passing downstream from the adjustment roller, and means are provided responsive to the measuring means for automatically approximately equalizing the tension of the web by adjustment of the adjustment roller on one end only of the adjustment roller.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2001Date of Patent: December 9, 2003Assignee: Goss Graphic Systems Inc.Inventors: Kenneth R. Patent number: 6641017Abstract: Process for handling a material web that includes moving the material web along with at least one circulating endless belt in a circulation direction, monitoring movement of an edge of said at least one circulating endless belt, and monitoring a position of said at least one circulating endless belt in a transverse direction by way of at least one belt travel sensor. The at least one belt travel sensor has a belt engaging surface which engages the edge of the at least one circulating endless belt. The process further includes driving repeatedly the at least one circulating endless belt in a direction generally transverse to the circulation direction utilizing the at least one belt travel sensor to generate linear transverse movement of the at least one circulating endless belt.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2002Date of Patent: November 4, 2003Assignee: Voith Sulzer Papiertechnik Patent GmbHInventors: Günther Hüttelmaier, Jürgen Birk, Reinhard Faix

Patent number: 6637634Abstract: A friction drive apparatus includes an edge detection system for determining a lateral position of a strip material advancing in a longitudinal direction. The edge detection system includes a first sensor and a second sensor for monitoring the lateral position of the strip material. The friction drive apparatus also includes instructions for automatically aligning the strip material as the strip material is advanced a predetermined aligning distance and instructions for calibrating the second sensor with respect to the first sensor to compensate for any potential discrepancies therebetween. The apparatus and methods of the present invention ensure that the strip material is properly aligned in the friction drive apparatus and limit waste of strip material during those operations.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1998Date of Patent: October 28, 2003Assignee: Gerber Scientific Products, Inc.Inventors: Daren Yeo, Patrick Raiola, Kenneth O. Patent number: 6619526Abstract: An automatic tape feeder for use in component placement machines includes a novel sprocket wheel for driving component carrier tapes to a gross position by an electric drive motor. Before the electric drive motor reaches the final position desired, it is deactivated or turned off. A novel indexing cam is connected to the sprocket drive wheel. A spring loaded pawl or positioning cam is moved into a vee-shaped groove on the indexing cam so as to achieve an actual fine position of the indexing cam as well as the teeth on the sprocket wheel. By first achieving a gross position with the drive motor and then a fine position with an indexing cam and pawl, it is possible to achieve a positioning accuracy in a pick up station which is as accurate as the sprocket holes and component pockets in the carrier tape. The present invention has achieved accuracies of ± one 1,000th of one inch which exceeds positioning accuracies of devices known heretofore.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 2000Date of Patent: September 16, 2003Assignee: Tyco Electronics Logistics AGInventor: Terry Dennis Souder, Jr.

Publication number: 20030155395Abstract: A variable representing runnability of a paper web to be manufactured with a paper machine or processed with a finishing apparatus is measured and the speed difference between operational groups of the paper machine and/or the finishing apparatus is adjusted on the basis of the measurement of said variable such that the moisture profile of the paper web is measured substantially along the entire width of the paper web, the minimum and maximum values for moisture are defined on the basis of the moisture profile, a drawing window describing the allowable tension to be directed to the paper web is defined, the lower and upper limits of the drawing window being defined on the basis of the minimum and maximum values for moisture, and the speed difference between the operational groups is adjusted so that the paper web tension is within the range defined by the drawing window.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 8, 2003Publication date: August 21, 2003Applicant: Metso Automation OyInventors: Jari Almi, Pekka Hoyssa

Patent number: 6604661Abstract: In web-fed rotary printing machines having a plurality of operating units arranged one after another, each unit having synchronously driven elements that interact directly or indirectly with the printing-material web, high reliability and short response times are achieved by a torque monitoring device having inputs for signals corresponding to the torque on at least one element of each operating unit. Upon the occurrence of an abrupt torque change on at least one monitored element, the monitoring device generates an output signal associated with a web break.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2001Date of Patent: August 12, 2003Assignee: MAN Roland Druckmaschinen AGInventors: Bernhard Feller, Robert Kersch, Harald Pecher

Publication number: 20030141339Abstract: Methods and apparatus to reduce or eliminate misalignment, wrinkles, and creases in coated web product. A relationship between web outgassing pressure and surface roughness of the web and web transporting rollers is developed. This relationship allows for the control over the web outgassing pressure. The ability to adjust the web tension pressure, as well as the selection of web transporting rollers with prescribed surface characteristics, allows an operator to control the degree to which the web floats over or tracks the web transporting roller. A controller, in response to pressure and tension sensors, can also provide dynamic, closed-loop control of the entire system.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 30, 2002Publication date: July 31, 2003Inventors: Nandakumar Vaidyanathan, Robert Bruce Lowd
