The stapler has an anvil with spaced-apart wedges disposed adjacent a backing plate, and the spaced-apart wedges have respective chamfers that contact legs of the staple and guide the legs away from each other. A driver blade is movable between the spaced apart wedges and pushes against a staple crown. As an actuator pushes the driver blade between the wedges, the staple is being pushed over the wedges. The actuator retracts the driver blade from between the spaced-apart wedges substantially independent of a biasing force pushing the spaced apart wedges against the backing plate.

The safety device includes a positive stop formed on the housing and a stop lip formed on the sliding front cover corresponding to the positive stop. When the user pushes the sliding front cover upward to remover lodged staples, the stop lip abuts the positive stop to limit movement of the sliding front cover. Therefore, the staples can be seen but are still held in the housing by the sliding front cover.

Because the spring is only partially pre-compressed, the positioning of the arm is responsive to changes in conditions inside the channel, such as when the head of a nail passes by the arm. The force exerted by the arm, under the influence of the spring, acts substantially along the radial axis of the nail, and is exerted on the nail during at least a portion of the time that the nail is being impelled by the driving mechanism of the nail gun.

When the contact arm is biased toward the wall, the upper portion is disengaged from the trigger for allowing the trigger to be manipulatable.     Abstract: A pneumatically operated fastener driving tool having a pivotally mounted magazine. The displacement of the magazine is used to actuate the tool when the nosepiece is in engagement with a workpiece. One portion of the cam lever is in engagement with a trip lever which forms a bearing surface for the trigger valve cartridge, which enables the tool when the magazine is in a drive position. The fastener driving tool also includes a poppet valve for controlling the compressed air flow into the drive cylinder. The top portion of the poppet is subject to the compressed air reservoir within the tool. A poppet chamber disposed at the bottom of the poppet controls the opening and closing of the poppet valve.
