  • Patent number: 11944338
Abstract: Thresholds can be assigned for one or more parameters in connection with the operation of a surgical device. An ultimate threshold can trigger a desired action, including cessation of operations or modification of operations, if the ultimate threshold is reached, or predicted to be reached. In addition, a marginal threshold can trigger a desired action, including improving operations such as slowing operations where the value of a parameter is measured to be between the values defined by a marginal threshold and an ultimate threshold. Multiple thresholds, based on multiple parameters, can be defined, further enabling calibrated usage, such as slowing operations based on exceeding both a marginal threshold based on number of sterilization cycles and exceeding a marginal threshold based on extent to which current draw exceeds a certain value.

  • Patent number: 11882987
Abstract: A surgical severing and stapling instrument, suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil. An E-beam firing bar moves distally through the clamped end effector to sever tissue and to drive staples on each side of the cut. The E-beam firing bar affirmatively spaces the anvil from the elongate channel to assure properly formed closed staples, especially when an amount of tissue is clamped that is inadequate to space the end effector. In particular, an upper pin of the firing bar longitudinally moves through an anvil slot and a channel slot is captured between a lower cap and a middle pin of the firing bar to assure a minimum spacing. Forming the E-beam from a thickened distal portion and a thinned proximal strip enhances manufacturability and facilitates use in such articulating surgical instruments.

An approximation drive assembly includes a first lead screw received within the first threaded bore. A second lead screw is received within the second threaded bore. A first pinion is supported on the first lead screw. A second pinion is supported on the second lead screw. Moving the drive member from the retracted position toward the advanced position advances the rack to rotate the first pinion and the second pinion, the first lead screw within the first threaded bore, and the second lead screw within the second threaded bore to move the second jaw in relation to the first jaw from an open position to a clamped position.

Abstract: An end effector for use by a surgeon to staple an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure includes a first jaw and a second jaw. The first jaw has a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis, and an anvil, which has an anvil face positionable on a first side of the anatomical structure. The second jaw has a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis, and a cartridge, which has a cartridge face positionable on a second side of the anatomical structure. The end effector includes a first coupling that couples the first end of the first jaw to the first end of the second jaw; and a second coupling that movably couples the second end of the first jaw to the second end of the second jaw and includes a rigid link connected to the first jaw and the second jaw.

  • Patent number: 11812963
Abstract: A surgical stapler includes a jaw assembly at a distal end connected to a handle assembly that is configured to control the stapler and actuate the deployment of staples. The surgical stapler successfully eliminates intermediate caming portions commonly known as pushers that are located between the staples and a translating slider. The staples are located in pockets at an angle such that the base of the staple is parallel to an angled caming surface of the slider. The translating slider comes into direct contact with staples during deployment as the slider moves through each staple pocket where staples are partially supported by recesses along the slider pathway. The staples are deployed at an angle against the anvil surface. Because there are no pushers, a great deal of space is saved resulting in a much smaller diameter surgical stapler that is particularly suitable for laparoscopic stapling applications.

  • Patent number: 11812956
Abstract: A surgical stapling device includes a cartridge assembly and a firing assembly. The cartridge assembly includes a cartridge body defining a central knife slot and rows of staple receiving pockets positioned on each side of the central knife slot. Each of the staple receiving slots receives one of the staples. The firing assembly includes a first firing device and a second firing device. The first firing device is movable from a retracted position to an advanced position independently of the second firing device to eject some of the staples on both sides of the central knife slot from the cartridge body, and the second firing device is subsequently movable from a retracted position to an advanced position to eject the staples remaining in the cartridge body from the cartridge body.

Abstract: A hand-held surgical instrument includes a handle housing and a shaft assembly extending distally from the handle housing. The shaft assembly includes an elongate body configured to translate from a distal position to a proximal position in response to an insertion of a surgical loading unit into a distal end portion of the shaft assembly. The shaft assembly has a cam plate configured to convert rotational motion into an articulation of an end effector of the surgical loading unit. When the elongate body is in the distal position, the elongate body is configured to prevent rotation of the cam plate.

  • Patent number: 11793519
Abstract: A system comprises a surgical instrument comprising an end effector comprising a first jaw member and a second jaw member, the second jaw member comprising or being configured to receive a plurality of staples; and an actuation mechanism operably coupled to the end effector to actuate the end effector to perform at least one of a clamping procedure or a staple firing procedure. The system further comprises a drive system configured to drive the actuation mechanism, a controller operably coupled to the drive system, and a user interface operably coupled to the controller, which is configured to determine the clamping procedure or the staple firing procedure has failed based on a magnitude of an actuation force applied by the drive system to the actuation mechanism; and cause the user interface to output a failure indication indicative of the failure.
