  • Patent number: 5560536
Abstract: An apparatus for making cable including an elongate core and a surrounding longitudinally welded tube includes one or more pairs of opposing tube forming rolls which form a tape into a generally tubular shape surrounding the advancing core. A pair of tube forming rolls define exit tube forming rolls mounted to have an adjustable spacing therebetween. A first sensor generates an exit roll spacing signal which is one parameter that may be displayed to the operator or used to directly to control the spacing. Downstream from an induction welding coil, a pair of opposing weld rolls are mounted to have an adjustable spacing therebetween for permitting setting of a desired pressure between the heated opposing longitudinal edges of the advancing tape. A second sensor generates a weld roll spacing signal which may also be displayed or used to directly control the spacing within a desired range. An associated method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5366569
Abstract: The object of the invention is a corrosion-resistant composite wire with diameters <10 mm, which has a concentric, homogeneous high-grade steel coating, wherein this coating, depending on the diameter of the wire and the application, can vary 15-30% by volume, and its strength can vary, depending on the core wire used and the degree of forming, up to .ltoreq.2000 N/mm.sup.2. To produce such a composite wire, for example, a high-strength, patented and surface-pretreated steel wire is sheathed with a strip of high-grade steel. In the first forming step, the longitudinally welded high-grade steel sheath is pressed tightly onto the core wire and in subsequent drawing steps, the composite wire is drawn to the final dimensions. At least between two forming steps, there is a selective annealing treatment of the composite wire by means of a rotary arc, whereby only the high-grade steel layer is heated to the annealing temperature.

  • Patent number: 4269639
Abstract: In the manufacture of mineral insulated cable, by a continuous process in which the tubular sheath is formed by bending and seam welding travelling metal strip, and insulating powder and conductor wires are continuously delivered into the sheath, one wire is fed through a guide tube extending into the sheath beyond the weld point, and having an aperture in its wall adjacent to the weld area. The wire so exposed directly to the heat from the weld conducts excess heat away from the weld, thus preventing thermal damage, in particular to a powder delivery tube if present. The guide tube is so arranged that powder is excluded from the weld area. When the sheath is formed of an oxidizable metal such as copper, a continuous stream of rare gas is delivered to the underside of the weld area. Forms of apparatus for carrying out vertical and horizontal processes are described.

  • Patent number: 4260095
Abstract: A clad product having predetermined closely-toleranced shape and dimensions. The product is made by first preforming a base material and a cladding of dissimilar material in dimensions substantially the same as the clad product, with at least the base or cladding being preformed with an additional dimensional profile. At least the cladding material is then heated to a solid-phase bonding temperature, achieved in one embodiment by laser-heating. The base material and cladding material are subsequently passed together through pressure rollers with application of a pressure for solid-phase bonding the cladding material against the base material to form the clad product. The bonding pressure of the rollers deforms the preformed additional dimensional profile to compensate for non-uniform material flow in the respective base or cladding material during solid-phase bonding for obtaining the predetermined closely-toleranced shape and dimensions of the clad product.

  • Patent number: 4227061
Abstract: A metal rod is supplied to a pair of bonding rolls provided with peripheral grooves forming a substantially circular roll pass that also receives at opposite sides of the rod a pair of metal strips of a different metal than that of the rod. The rolls press the strips against the rod and pull all three together through the roll pass, with the strips bent around the rod to enclose it. Before the strips reach the pass, an electric current passes through a length of each one to heat it to a solid-phase bonding temperature and to burn off contaminants. Also, before the rod reaches the rolls, it is heated to a solid-phase bonding temperature by means of an electric induction coil encircling it while it is passing through an enclosure maintained full of a gas providing a controlled atmosphere around the heated portion of the rod. The diameter of the roll pass is small enough to reduce the diameter of the product therein and simultaneously cause solid-phase bonding together of the heated strips and heated rod.
