Patent number: 6070790Abstract: The tamper evidency of a carton is increased by producing stronger end flap seals. This can be done by anchoring the adhesive onto at least one of the end flaps. In a preferred embodiment there is at least one lower flap with at least one recessed area, at least one seal flap with at least one aperture and at least one top flap. The lower flaps are folded inward followed by the seal flap. An adhesive is on the inner surface of the top flap which then is folded inward onto the seal flap. The adhesive flows through the at least one aperture in the seal flap and spreads outwardly in the at lest one recessed area below the at least one seal flap to become anchored to the seal flap. This is enchanted by a plurality of recesses in the at least one lower flap adjacent to the at least one aperture in the at least one seal flap. By being anchored to the seal flap and adhesively attached to the fiberboard underside of the top flap, a strong end seal is formed on the carton.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1997Date of Patent: June 6, 2000Assignee: Colgate-Palmolive CompanyInventor: Jeff Anderson

Patent number: 5472137Abstract: A sift proof carton and method of folding and sealing the major and minor end flaps of a carton to provide a sift proof container wherein the method includes providing a carton having first and second inside and outside major flaps and a pair of minor flaps, and folding the minor flaps to substantially cover an open end of the carton. Opposite sides of the first inside major flap are then mitered and both the first and second major flaps are positioned in open positions with respect to the carton. The carton is then put in motion and, during such motion, an adhesive pattern is applied from a stationary adhesive nozzle member to selected areas of the second outside major flap and the minor flaps. The first inside major flap is then folded onto the minor flaps followed by the second outside major flap which provides direct sealing contact between the second outside major flap and both minor flaps as well as portions of the first inside major flap so as to provide the sift proof carton.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1994Date of Patent: December 5, 1995Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventor: Paul M. Patent number: 5143281Abstract: The invention relates to a folding box of composite cardboard material coated heat sealably at least on the inside, which has a flat bottom to which two pairs of opposite triangular folding pockets are sealed lying flat. To prevent bubble formation on the inside of the package, more particularly those areas of the triangular folding pockets which are to be sealed to one another over their complete surface, due to steam forming in the composite cardboard material during the heat activation of the areas, the heat sealable coating is perforated right into the cardboard in the areas.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1991Date of Patent: September 1, 1992Assignee: PKL Verpackungssysteme GmbHInventors: Hans-Willi Mainz, Lutz Schneider

Patent number: 5090616Abstract: A modified glue flap of a folding carton blank for preventing glue from being squeezed out during the step of adhering the glue flap to the opposite end panel. The face of the glue flap engaged by the glue back-up wheel includes a protrusion near the trailing edge of the flap. Engagement of the protrusion by the back-up wheel causes the glue wheel to skip the trailing area of the flap. The absence of glue in this area prevents glue from being squeezed out when sealing pressure is subsequently applied to the glue flap and the opposite end panel. The protrusion may take the form of an embossed ridge, forming a channel on the opposite side of the protrusion for receiving any excess glue which would have been squeezed out.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1991Date of Patent: February 25, 1992Assignee: Riverwood Natural Resources CorporationInventor: Raymond O. Patent number: 5029714Abstract: A paperboard carton formed from a unitary blank of paperboard. A side flap of the carton bottom is overlapped with and sealed to a side flap of the top cover. At least one of these flaps is provided with spaced abseal (adhesion resistant) areas. The interabseal areas are provided with adhesive to seal against the other, overlapping flap. The interabseal areas are bordered by cut lines extending partially through the paperboard, and are preferably embossed so as to be raised from the remaining flap area. The other front and side flaps are conventionally sealed together by an adhesive, such as a heat activated PET coating on the paperboard surface. To effect opening, these two flaps are pulled apart with the adhered together, interabseal are a of one of these flaps delaminating by virtue of the cut lines, the latter extending completely through the PET coating.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1990Date of Patent: July 9, 1991Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Benjamin J.
