Patent number: 7487905Abstract: The embodiments of the present invention provide a blank foldable material that may be configured to form a container. When formed, the container is self-locking and includes top panel assemblies that form additional bearing surfaces. The blank is configured to form a container that includes corners having multiple thicknesses. However, despite the multiple thickness of the corner assemblies, the panels are only adhered in one location per corner. The single adhesion/corner arrangement provides a multi-wall corner arrangement that is strong, yet has flexible applications. The single adhesive/corner adds vertical stacking strength and lateral stability between the panels. The unique approach of only adhering at one place per corner is a space and cost saving improvement that maintains a container integrity and usefulness.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2005Date of Patent: February 10, 2009Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Jack A. Patent number: 6367690Abstract: A cover panel improvement is described for a container having a bottom panel, side walls, end walls, and an open top. The improvement includes first and second cover panels connected to the side walls. Each cover panel includes side tabs that extend outwardly and fold down onto the end walls of the container. Portions of the cover panel overlap, as do portions of the side tabs. Various embodiments are provided regarding the size, shape, and placement of heavy and zero crush areas in the side tabs and cover panels. The heavy crush areas are used to reduce the overall thickness of the side tabs where overlapped. Openings may be used along the hinge line between the side tabs to help in properly forming the respective hinge line, e.g., by making the side tab more flexible along its fold line. Likewise, a spine may be used to help maintain tab stiffness.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 2001Date of Patent: April 9, 2002Assignee: Weyerhaeuser CompanyInventor: Jack A. McClure

Patent number: 6223979Abstract: A paperboard clamshell carton having a cover member that has a distance between opposing lateral panel fold lines that is slightly longer than a distance between the top edges of opposing side walls. In addition, the height of the first and second side walls is such that the side walls extend virtually all the way from the bottom panel to the top panel of the carton. Thereby, lateral panels of the cover member are disposed on an exterior side of the side walls and the top panel rests on the top edge of the side walls, particularly when downward pressure is applied to the cover member. The invention is envisioned for use in packaging food products such as pizza, breadsticks, chicken, hamburgers, salads, and the like; however, it could be used in other applications, as well.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1999Date of Patent: May 1, 2001Inventor: John D. Patent number: 6059178Abstract: A tamper evident shipping container comprising a generally rectangular box formed from corrugated paper board includes a pair of overlapping top closure panels adhered together in sealed condition by multiple strips of pressure sensitive adhesive disposed therebetween and a pair of overlapping bottom closure panels sealed together in a like manner. Retaining tabs connected to opposite ends of one of the top closure panels and one of the bottom closure panels are adhered to the end walls of the container by pressure sensitive adhesive. The flutes or corrugations which comprise the container material extend transversely of the retaining tabs and the free edges of the top and bottom closure panels so that attempted entry of the container in the regions of seal causes creasing of the container material along the lines of scorrugation. The resulting creases are readily evident from a cursory inspection of the sealed container.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1998Date of Patent: May 9, 2000Assignee: All Crate, Inc.Inventors: James F. Patent number: 5394982Abstract: The container is optionally useful for transport of new sharp medical instruments, and for disposal of used sharp medical instruments. The container includes a pair of top flaps, a first of which pivots relative to the other. The second flap is selectively fixed to the body of the container to limit the opening to the interior of the body when the container is to be utilized for disposal of used sharp medical instruments. The second flap is typically not secured during transport such that it may be moved to provide a relatively large area or opening for insertion or removal of the new medical instruments. Several embodiments of the invention provide closure tabs at the ends of the second flap which are engageable with closure elements carried by the end walls of the container body to fix the second flap and to permit only a restricted opening into the interior of the container for the insertion of used sharp medical instruments.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1993Date of Patent: March 7, 1995Assignee: Specialized Health Products, Inc.Inventor: Frederick J.
