Patent number: 5541858Abstract: A system for storing beginning and ending odometer readings of a plurality of individual trips made by a vehicle. The odometer readings for each trip are stored individually for future retrieval and use. The system can be directly connected to an odometer device included on the vehicle, or odometer information can be manually input by the vehicle operator. The date and other data such as the vehicle and operator identify, trip purpose, and customer identification codes, are stored for each trip. A data I/O port is provided to allow direct transfer of data from the system to a central computer where the data can be used by appropriate computer programs. The distance traveled during each trip can be calculated by a central computer, or the system can be programmed to calculate the trip distance. The apparatus is accommodated in a compact housing which slides into a cradle mounted inside the vehicle for convenient relocation from one vehicle to another or to a computer for data transfer.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1993Date of Patent: July 30, 1996Inventor: Ralph C. Patent number: 5464970Abstract: A vehicle trip odometer has a central shaft with both ends protruding for coupling of either end or both ends with other odometers. A total distance odometer likewise has both ends available for coupling to a trip odometer. Thus several arrangements of counter mechanisms are possible with a single design of trip and total odometers. Two trip odometers are serially driven by one end of the total odometer, or are each driven at opposite ends of the total odometer. A molded coupler connects shaft ends for joining adjacent odometers. Each shaft end has a flat for positive rotational drive of a coupler with a mating recess.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1994Date of Patent: November 7, 1995Assignee: Delco Electronics CorporationInventors: Walter J. Patent number: 4697278Abstract: An electronic hub odometer employs a permanent magnet and a magnetic reed switch for recording the number of revolutions of a vehicle wheel to which the odometer is mounted. A programmable integrated circuit electrically communicates with a clock crystal and the magnetic reed switch to automatically produce data relative to the time, distance and rate of travel of the associated vehicle. The data is stored in a random access memory integrated circuit. An infrared light emitting diode is employed for transmitting the data from the odometer to a remote unit. Information is also transmitted to the odometer from a remote unit via a photo-optical detector.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1985Date of Patent: September 29, 1987Assignee: Veeder Industries Inc.Inventor: Donald W. Patent number: 4642787Abstract: A microprocessor is utilized to store a total accumulated driven mileage (odometer) signal in a non-volatile random access memory (RAM). Trip mileage manual pushbuttons are coupled to the microprocessor and enable the calculation and display of elapsed driven mileage (trip mileage), and a units pushbutton converts the displayed total accumulated driven mileage and/or the elapsed trip mileage from a miles to a kilometer visual display. The microprocessor effectively retrieves non-volatile stored odometer signals, loads them into a microprocessor volatile memory, increments the volatile memory mileage signal in accordance with signals from an actual mileage sensor and provides a visual mileage display on an odometer display. The magnitude of the odometer signal stored in the non-volatile memory can be preset to a predetermined mileage after the non-volatile memory is coupled to the microprocessor.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1984Date of Patent: February 10, 1987Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Timothy D. Patent number: 4593263Abstract: A mileage recording and service reminding accessory for a shared-use vehicle is provided as a self-contained unit which may be installed as original equipment at the time of manufacture or added as a modification accessory to an existing vehicle. The console includes auxiliary individual odometers or hour meters for different persons authorized to use the vehicle, a master meter within the console, an electric circuit operable to selectively connect a desired auxiliary odometer or hour meter to the master meter, and a service warning meter for registering and displaying pre-selected target mileages for prescribed service. The console also includes a key actuated switch for each of said individual odometers or hour meters. Actuation of each switch activates the ignition and contemporaneously activates only its respective odometer or hour meter to record the vehicle usage for the then current user independently of the usage recorded for the other users.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1983Date of Patent: June 3, 1986Inventor: Ralph H. Peckworth

Patent number: 4284972Abstract: An apparatus for providing a service reminder when a vehicle has accumulated a predetermined mileage comprises a potentiometer operated by the highest order number wheel of the vehicle odometer to provide an output voltage which changes incrementally with each indexing motion of that number wheel. An electrical detector responsive to the potentiometer output energizes a signal lamp when the output reaches a voltage in a predetermined range representing a desired service interval. An electrical connector in circuit with the potentiometer can be disconnected to change the potentiometer voltage to a value outside the predetermined range to allow the service reminder circuit to turn off the indicator lamp when the indicated service has been performed. The apparatus is adapted to operate in conjunction with an electronic engine control module which can be programmed to detect the predetermined value of the potentiometer output and to operate a signal lamp.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1979Date of Patent: August 18, 1981Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Randolph K.
