Abstract: An atomizing injector comprises a body having a central bore with a valve situated in the bore, leading to a chamber. An actuator moves the valve between closed condition and open conditions, selectively exposing the chamber to a flow of pressurized liquid. A discharge port extends from the chamber to a discharge orifice. A swirl element is situated in the chamber, while leaving a free space in the chamber immediately above the discharge port. When the valve is opened, liquid flows into the chamber, through the swirl element into the space, forming a whirl in the space before passing through the discharge port and exiting the discharge orifice as an atomized whirling spray.

A helical spring in the housing extends toward the orifice for liquid in the housing to flow in a helical path between loops of the spring in a strong whirling motion before being discharged through the orifice. A spindle element is in an at least essentially cylindrical passage in the housing with the helical spring, the helical spring extending around the spindle element and engaging at one end the housing at the orifice and at an opposite end the spindle element for a force of the helical spring to urge the spindle element away from the orifice towards a stop in the cylindrical passage, the spindle element being axially movable in an axial direction of the cylindrical passage in response to the force and an opposite-acting pressure force of the liquid.

  • Patent number: 5423488
Abstract: Spray apparatus for mixing, atomizing and spraying foam forming components has a hollow wand of extensive length that is adapted to be connected at one end to a conventional mixhead and has mounted therein a static mixing element that extends the length of the wand. A nozzle having a singular central orifice through its tip is mounted on the distal end of the wand and houses a floating core. The core has a convex end facing the orifice and is contactible thereabout with an interior side of the nozzle tip. The mixing element has a spiral shape that operates to incite turbulence and thereby enhance mixing of the foam forming components passing through the wand from the mixhead. The core has a peripheral surface that converges in the direction of the orifice and angled channels in this surface separate the mixed components into streams directed toward the orifice and together with the orifice atomize the mixed components and cause the discharge thereof in a uniform atomized cone-shaped spray pattern.

Abstract: A hollow body has a connected tubular discharge stem. The stem has a tapered tip formed with at least one discharge passage. An annular gasket complementing the shape of the taper is normally seated on the tip and valves off the passage. A hollow tubular shell is over the stem and carries the gasket at its upper end. The shell encloses a spring working between the bottom of the shell and a fin on the stem spaced back from the tip. In operation, the shell is moved away from the body so liquid can discharge through the gasket.

  • Patent number: 4754869
Abstract: An apparatus for providing uniform distribution of aggregate material has a rotatable hopper mounted on a support frame to receive aggregate material from an apparatus supplying aggregate material. Attached to the rotatable hopper, and in communication with a discharge opening of the hopper, is a chute extending downwardly and angularly outwardly from the axis of rotation of the hopper. The chute includes a baffle which responds to the gravitational force applied by the flow of aggregate down the chute to cause rotation of the hopper and thereby provide for uniform spreading of aggregate beneath the hopper. A modified version includes a first hopper pivotally mounted on the support frame in a manner to receive aggregate from the supply apparatus and a second hopper rotatably mounted beneath the first hopper with the chute attached to the rotatable hopper to receive aggregate from the rotatable hopper and cause rotation of the rotatable hopper.

The injector discharge region includes a central flow axis and, sequentially in the downstream direction, a simple metering orifice symmetrical with the axis, and flow patterning structure including a diverging flow director for directing the flow of fuel issuing from the metering orifice radially outward relative to the axis to an annular region about the axis and a converging flow director for directing the fuel radially inward relative to the axis from a position radially outward thereof for direct "transparent" discharge thereafter from the injector. A discrete exit nozzle may be shaped to effect the requisite flow convergence, and the angle of that convergence affects the geometry of the final spray pattern. A swirl disc may be positioned intermediate the other two flow directors.

Abstract: A novel center vane is disclosed for use in a full or solid cone spray nozzle. The vane has a solid center and specific parameters are set forth, in relation to the nozzle size and orifice diameter, for the vane geometry so that a solid spray cone of uniform distribution is obtained. In particular, we have found that when the orifice diameter is less than half of the nozzle diameter, the vane recess depth is a critical dimension to obtain a uniform fluid particle distribution in the solid cone spray and specifically have found that if the orifice diameter is equal to or greater than one-half the pipe or nozzle diameter, the vane recess depth should be one-fourth (0.25) of the pipe diameter, but if the orifice diameter is less than half of the pipe or nozzle diameter, the vane recess depth in inches should be equal to the orifice diameter squared divided by the nozzle diameter.
