  • Patent number: 7731100
Abstract: Diverse methods of utilization and the corresponding, related modifications, of linear type, Variable Gas Atomization (VGA) nozzles and lances are described. Therein is joined the mixing and gas atomization of chemicals that react to form active products that further react with harmful flue gas constituents of combustion so as to enable their effective collection. One version combines, in a lance assembly of nozzles, the injection of reactants, in the form of finely divided dry solids conveyed in a carrier air stream, and the fine atomization of water, aqueous solutions or slurries. Atomization of such streams is employed to effectively wet the surfaces of the dry particles and, thereby, promote the rapid sorption of gaseous constituents of flue gas being treated. Another version simultaneously mixes and atomizes reacting chemicals to produce, and release into the flue gas stream, strongly oxidizing, transient, species of their reaction products.

Abstract: A fuel nozzle includes a hub with a plurality of output fuel holes arranged perimetrically around the hub. At least two plates located inside the hub define fuel flow passages between an input fuel flow and the output fuel holes. A plurality of enclosures is located between an inner surface of the hub and an outer one of the plates. Each enclosure is in fuel flow communication with first ones of the output fuel holes and the input fuel flow to define a first one of the passages. The two plates define a second one of the fuel flow passages which is in fuel flow communication with the input fuel flow and with second ones of the output fuel holes.

Abstract: Adjustable nozzles for directing a solid-stream of fluid and associated methods for using the same are provided. According to one embodiment, the adjustable nozzle includes a base member having an aperture therethrough defining a nozzle inlet. The nozzle includes a plurality of elongate vanes each having first and second ends. The first ends of the vanes extend from the base member in a circumferential configuration so as to form an interior region. The second ends of the vanes are operable to define an expandable nozzle outlet. The nozzle includes a liner extending from the nozzle inlet to the nozzle outlet within the interior region. The liner is structured to direct the fluid from the nozzle inlet to the nozzle outlet. Each of the plurality of vanes is biased towards the liner to thereby support the liner and control the flow of the fluid therethrough.

  • Patent number: 7415827
Abstract: In an air mixing arrangement wherein a primary fluid is introduced through an opening in a wall to be mixed with a secondary fluid flowing along the wall surface, the opening is airfoil shaped with its leading edge being orientated at an attack angle with respect to the secondary fluid flow stream so as to thereby enhance the penetration and dispersion of the primary fluid stream into the secondary fluid stream. The airfoil shaped opening is selectively positioned such that its angle of attack provides the desired lift to optimize the mixing of the two streams for the particular application. In one embodiment, a collar is provided around the opening to prevent the secondary fluid from contacting the surface of the wall during certain conditions of operation. Multiple openings maybe used such as the combination of a larger airfoil shaped opening with a smaller airfoil shaped opened positioned downstream thereof, or a round shaped opening placed upstream of an airfoil shaped opening.
