  • Patent number: 8794552
Abstract: Apparatus for separating components of post-consumer carpet—pile, adhesive, and primary/secondary backings—may initially comprise spectrographic face fiber identification. Separating substantial portions of pile from backing comprises feeding carpeting into a rotating pinned drum, with separated pile U's dropping, while a residual composition, being primarily backing, travels with the drum, to be separated therefrom using vacuum pressure, with the composite backing being sent to a press. Vacuum pressure delivers the separated U's to a spinning perforated squirrel cage to remove dislodged pieces of adhesive, by vacuum pressure applied to an interior top portion of the cage to draw pieces therein. Rotating the perforated squirrel cage, which is sealed on the exterior using a belt, permits the U's to drop into a hopper. A mesh shaker box vibrates to separate any remaining backing from the pile U's. Hammers in a fibermill remove remaining adhesive attached to the separated pile U fiber.

Abstract: To improve throughput of biomedical waste treatment, the present inventors devised an exemplary ozone-based system including a shredder, a roll-off treatment bin with ozone injectors, an ozone source, and a controller. The controller monitors electric current drawn by the shredder as shredded waste enters the ozone-enriched treatment bin. In response to current falling below a predetermined low level, indicating that a batch of waste has been shredded and loaded into the treatment bin, the controller starts a treatment timer. The timer measures elapsed ozone treatment or exposure time. If additional waste is added to the shredder and a subsequent low-current condition is detected, the controller restarts the treatment timer. Expiration of the timer indicates that the waste in the roll-off bin is sterilized and ready for transport to landfills. The exemplary system provides continuous waste processing and promises to boost throughput by 50% over some conventional ozone-based waste-treatment systems.

  • Patent number: 8511591
Abstract: A system and method for extracting an inner layer (e.g., an inner gypsum layer) from a multi-layered construction panel (e.g., gypsum board, plaster board, drywall, etc.) and utilizing the extracted layer to construct a recycled construction panel is presented. In particular, the present invention comprises an extraction assembly structured to cut or otherwise remove the outer, paper layers from the construction panel, leaving the inner, gypsum layer. The inner layer is then fed into a crashing assembly structured to break the layer into a plurality of pieces. The plurality of pieces are transported or fed into a milling assembly where a smaller or powdery substance is obtained. From that substance, a new construction panel (or inner, gypsum layer) can be constructed.

  • Patent number: 8453953
Abstract: The invention provides low-cost, non-thermal methods to transform and beneficiate bulk materials, including low rank coals such as peat, lignite, brown coal, subbituminous coal, other carbonaceous solids or derived feedstock. High pressure compaction and comminution processes are linked to transform the solid materials by eliminating interstitial, capillary, pores, or other voids that are present in the materials and that may contain liquid, air or gases that are detrimental to the quality and performance of the bulk materials, thereby beneficiating the bulk products to provide premium feedstock for industrial or commercial uses, such as electric power generation, gasification, liquefaction, and carbon activation. The handling characteristics, dust mitigation aspects and combustion emissions of the products may also be improved.

  • Publication number: 20130043334
Abstract: A high inertia cylindrical mass element having one or more food chopping blades detachably affixed thereto is positioned within a transparent cylindrical tube containing food to be chopped. The tube containing the high inertia cylindrical mass element is dimensioned to permit the tube to be moved back-and forth much more than the mass element is moved therein due to the high inertia of the cylindrical mass upon the manually induced to-and-fro motion of the tube by the user that results in chopping of the food. In addition to creating the back-and forth movement of the tube, the user also twists the ends of the tube with her wrists while the tube is grasped which results in relative rotary displacement of the tube relative to the high inertia cylindrical mass carrying cutting blades that tends to chop the food more uniformly.

  • Publication number: 20130001336
Abstract: A method for automated destringing and breaking down of baled biomass material using limited manual labor is disclosed. The method includes selecting and moving one bale of biomass material from a stack of bales to an automated destringing station where the string is removed from that bale. The bale is then lined up next in line with previously processed destrung bales and advanced along a continuous process line through a bale chopper that breaks the biomass material down into useful pieces for further processing at the facility. In a preferred embodiment an automated initial quality control evaluation step can be provided with a bale rejection system operated on detected non-conforming bales before they are destrung.
