  • Patent number: 5437418
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for preparing a quantity of individual treated fibers from one or more fiber mats. The apparatus comprises a fiber treatment zone, and a conveyor for conveying each mat through the fiber treatment zone. In the treatment zone each mat is impregnated by an applicator with a treatment material, such as a crosslinking substance, and conveyed directly to an attrition device. The attrition device fiberizes the mats to form a fiber output having a low nit level, such as no more than about three, and a dryer both dries the fiber output and cures the crosslinking substance. The fiberizer is configured to minimize the accumulation of fiber at locations therein. Fiber is transported from the attrition device to the dryer at a high velocity under reduced pressure to promote drying. A heated retention bin is provided after drying to increase curing time in the system. A thermobonding agent may be added to the dried and cured fibers to enhance the wet strength of webs made from the fiber.

  • Patent number: 5429312
Abstract: A side feed type of roller mill having a housing, a rotating table provided in the housing, and a feed inlet chute extending obliquely downwardly through an upper side wall of the housing and having a lower end exposed over the rotating table. The feed inlet chute includes a cylindrical chute body and a liner mounted inside the chute body. The liner is formed of a flexible elastic material, so that the inner surface of the liner is irregularly deformed as accompanying peristalsis and vibration by both the own weight and the gliding/falling forces of a feed material passing through the chute and the elastic restoring force of the liner itself. Accordingly, a deposit layer of the feed material formed on the inner surface of the liner can soon be autonomously removed by the deformation of the liner without interruption of the operation of the roller mill. Thus, stable and efficient pulverization can be continuously performed.

Abstract: In general, used thermoplastic liquid containers such as oil and solvent bottles are discarded. When recycling oil bottles, the usual practice is to wash the bottles with a solvent to remove oil therefrom. Washing of the bottles results in large quantities of used, oil-containing solvent, which present a disposal problem. A simple solution to the problem of recycling liquid containers with no preliminary washing or cleaning operation includes the steps of tumbling the bottles to promote liquid separation, shredding the bottles into small pieces and draining the liquid therefrom, grinding the pieces of plastic to yield a particulate thermoplastic, and mixing the particulate thermoplastic and any liquid remaining therein with an additive, e.g. an oil absorbent and a filler such as calcium carbonate, glass, mica or talc, and when the liquid is an oil, an absorbent to produce an extrudable mixture which can be used to form new containers.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for separation, recovery, and recycling municipal solid waste and the like by introducing solid waste materials into a rotatable pressure vessel, rotating, pressurizing, and heating the pressure vessel and thus the waste material while simultaneously applying an extruding action to the solid waste material. The extruding action is achieved by a rotatable extruder mechanism carried in the pressure vessel which forces the processed solid waste material through a constricted area adjacent the exit of the pressure vessel.

Abstract: An apparatus is provided for recycling a polyolefin material end product. This apparatus comprises a housing and a curvilinear recycling area disposed within the housing and having an inner curvilinear surface. A mechanism, adjacent one end of the recycling area, is provided for feeding the polyolefin material end product into the recycling area. The apparatus further comprises a blade, horizontally disposed and rotatably mounted within the recycling area at an end opposed to the one end, for cutting the polyolefin material end product. A mechanism is provided for introducing liquid into the recycling area. Moisture is exhausted from the recycling area. The process of the present invention comprises several steps. Polyolefin material end product is fed into a curvilinear recycling area for an interval of time sufficient to fill the recycling area to a predetermined capacity.

  • Patent number: 5171494
Abstract: Method of producing a paint or other plastic resinous material or product which on application to a surface imparts the surface with a tanned skin or leather-like appearance. The method includes incorporating into a paint or a plastic resin fluid a granular non-flocculating resin-plastic-compatible leather powder having a specific gravity of about 0.38 to about 0.5 g/cc. The leather powder is produced from tanned skin and/or leather chips and/or strips which have been steam heated a period of time sufficient to permit the chips and/or strips to swell and simultaneously cause the naturally occurring twisted and tangled collagen fibers therein to shrinkk and to automatically loosen and become less twisted and less tangled which upon pulverization produces a powder including relatively smooth granules having lubricity and relatively non-fibrous.

Abstract: A method of recycling of oil filters utilizes a shredder and a thermal unit. The oil filters are shredded into metal and porous media particles. The shredded matter is placed in a thermal unit and heated. The heat will be sufficient to convert the porous media to an ash, but not sufficient to melt the steel. After heating for a sufficient duration, the shredded metal particles will be separated from the ash and recycled. The ash will also be recycled.

  • Patent number: 5123600
Abstract: Wet refuse together with some amount of water may be deposited through a drain port of a sink tub in a common household. The wet refuse is then comminuted into finely divided pieces in a fully automatic manner by a wet refuse crusher without the need for any manual operation, and charged, together with water, into a wet refuse disposer containing a bed or matrix of particulate material loaded with microorganism such as soil bacteria capable of decomposing organics where all of the wet refuse is decomposed and consumed in at most about half a day as the finely divided pieces of wet refuse have tens or hundreds of times as great surface area as the wet refuse in its original form. The water entrained with the wet refuse is passed and discharged through the particulate bed material having a filtering function.

  • Patent number: 5119994
Abstract: An apparatus and novel method for processing medical waste materials comprising an elongate pressure vessel of generally cylindrical configuration having an inlet end, and a closely fitting closure member for the inlet. An elongate drum of generally cylindrical configuration is mounted in the vessel for rotation about its longitudinal axis, which drum can be selectively driven in either rotative direction. The longitudinal axis of the drum is disposed at a slight angle of incline to the horizontal, placing the inlet end at a slightly higher elevation than the opposite end. A helically configured member is disposed along the interior perimeter of said drum, such that during rotation of the drum in a first rotative direction, the helically configured member moves the waste material in a direction away from the inlet end of the drum, whereas during rotation of the drum in the second rotative direction, the helically configured member moves the waste material toward the inlet.
