Abstract: Apparatus for the formation of packages of elongated flexible material wound upon a pirn supported and rotated in the apparatus, the apparatus having an operating carriage mounted for reciprocation parallel to the axis of the pirn, mechanism for reciprocating the operating carriage with a basic reciprocating movement lengthwise of the pirn, a vibrator mounted upon the operating carriage, a thread guide vibrated by the vibrator in a direction lengthwise of the pirn with an amplitude which is a fraction of the amplitude of reciprocation of the operating carriage, and a controlling mechanism for insuring the periodic translational shifting of the thread guide to the top of the pirn.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for winding textile yarns into core-supported packages is provided in which the formation of thickened and hardened places in the yarn packages at opposite ends thereof are avoided by a recurrent series of stroke modification cycles in which the length of traverse stroke is varied aperiodically as determined by a random number sequence. Additionally, the formation of undesirable patterns in the windings of yarn forming such packages is avoided by continuously varying the speed of traverse of the yarn guide by accelerating and decelerating the traversing yarn guide between predetermined maximum and minimum speeds. The stroke modification cycles and traverse motion speed changes are coordinated in such manner that the periods of high traverse motion speed coincide with the periods of short traverse stroke length and vice versa.

Abstract: A method of winding a metal wire around a reel structure is disclosed in which the wire is wound about a roller to give the wire a round habit of preselected diameter, at least one of the last few coils of said wire being strained so as to increase the diameter of the round habit, and all of the wire being wound on a reel structure whereby the at least one coil having the larger diameter round habit is coiled about the reel structure in an expanded condition with respect to the remainder of the coils. An apparatus for performing this method is also disclosed.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for winding continuous, flexible, strapping into rolls comprised of overlying layers, with each such wound layer having a like number of convolutions, including like strapping portions which bridge adjacent overlying layers and are subjected to a minimum of distortion, and a stable wound strapping package having a substantially round contour.
