  • Patent number: 9119384
Abstract: A fishing reel can include a reel frame and a spool shaft extending through the reel frame and rotatably supported about the reel frame. A crankable handle can be mechanically coupled to the spool shaft such that a rotation of the handle causes a rotation of the spool shaft. A non-rotating pivotable bail can be coupled to the reel frame. A spool can be mechanically coupled to the spool shaft and configured to rotate with the rotation of the spool shaft relative to the bail.

  • Patent number: 6634587
Abstract: In a fishing reel fishing line release and retrieve mechanism in which a projection is affixed to the periphery of a rotor in such a manner that the projection spans the periphery of a spools integral flanges and extends into a gap between the cylindrical formed periphery of a free rotating disk and the periphery of the outer spool flange, a mode for coiling fishing line onto the spool. Separating spool and disk from rotor to a distance the projection no longer extends into gap a mode for allowing fishing line to uncoil off of spool. A fishing reel fishing line release and retrieve mechanism having a rotor shaft and a spool shaft that rotate about the same axis and rotatable in the opposite directions simultaneously by a crank determining the fishing line retrieved to crank rotation ratio and having a mechanism to disengage spool shaft rotation during fishing line retrieve operation determining a second fishing line retrieved to crank rotation ratio.

  • Patent number: 6032892
Abstract: A fishing reel eliminates line twist as the fishing line is taken on or off of the spool by utilizing a non-rotating nose member and line pick-up member in combination with a rotational spool and a line-engaging control mechanism which at the beginning of the cast retracts the nose member against a forward end of the housing to capture the fishing line therebetween and, toward the end of the cast, a separate release mechanism manually releases the nose member to permit the fishing line to play freely off of the spool. The release mechanism may be a manual or automatic casting control mechanism which is mounted just forwardly of the handle portion of a fishing rod and is operable to return the nose member to an open position in response to a forward casting motion of the rod and reel.

  • Patent number: 5467932
Abstract: A spincast reel, having a line spool which is aligned along the axis of a fishing rod. A rotating cap on the front of the spool, having retractable fingers, serves to wind up the line on the spool during retrieval. The line passes from the spool through a moveable line control arm, which is connected to a digit actuated lever for movement from an aligned position ahead of the spool, continuously through to a position at right angles to the axis of the spool. The line passes through a line guide in the line control arm; the line guide is lined with a freely spinning surface, supported on ball bearings.

  • Patent number: 5368246
Abstract: A spincasting reel is made up of an outer housing, a shaft extending through the housing including a line spool and nose portion at one end of the shaft externally of the housing with the fishing line extending away from the spool in the gap formed between the nose portion and housing. A line pick-up member extends across the annular gap and reciprocates with the nose portion when the fishing line is reeled in by a manual crank; and in releasing the line from the spool during the casting stroke the line pick-up member and nose portion are both latched in positions out of the path of movement of the line. As a preliminary to casting, a temporary restraint member may be advanced into engagement with the nose to prevent line release from the spool, and a drag control mechanism is associated with the shaft to apply a predetermined resistance to rotation of the spool and tension on the line when it is released from the spool.

  • Patent number: 5199664
Abstract: A fishing reel having a drag brake is disclosed which has a line receiving pool which is allowed to run free when the drag brake is disengaged. The drag brake is located at an opposite end of the fishing reel housing from the spool and acts on a spindle of the spool at that point. In the vicinity of the spool, a disengageable connection is provided for connecting the spool to a spindle of the fishing reel. The clutch is engaged by rotation of a driving handle. Further provided is an over-run brake located in the vicinity of the spool which acts between the spool and the spindle only upon relative rotation of the spool with respect to the spindle when the drag brake is disengaged. Further included are push rods which, upon displacement, causes disengagement of the spool from the spindle and pawls, carried by a ring surrounding the spindle, which may engage various spaced teeth formed integral with a bush fixed to a rotor of the fishing reel.

  • Patent number: 4982912
Abstract: A line control device for axial delivery casting reels of the type that include a spool and a line pick-up (44) having a bail and a line guide or roller (42). The device comprises a mechanical finger (16) pivotally supported and having a pivotal axis approximately parallel with the reel spool axis. The finger is positioned to move in front of the line guide. Thus, the finger catches and holds casting line (50) extending from the guide as the finger moves to a line engaged position. Included are means operated by the thumb of the user for moving the finger to the line engaged position. A spring (40) urges the finger toward a line disengaged position so that the line can be instantly released for a cast. The device can also serve with open face driven spool reels (52) in a dual role; as a line pickup for winding and as a line release finger for casting.

  • Patent number: 4834307
Abstract: A fishing reel of the fixed-spool type comprises a frame and a spool shaft rotatably mounted therein. A line spool is non-rotatably mounted on the end of the spool shaft projecting from the frame. The reel has a transmission for changing the movement of a handle, both into a rotary movement of a rotor for winding up a line on the line spool and into a movement of an eccentric device for axial oscillation of the spool shaft. The reel further has an adjustable friction brake intended to allow the line spool to rotate under frictional drag in relation to the frame. Further, the fishing reel has a friction brake release device which is operated by the handle and which, when the handle is turned backwards (in a direction contrary to the direction of retrieve), acts on the preset friction brake so that it can be released and thereafter readily reengaged.
