  • Patent number: 5749534
Abstract: A magnetic brake mechanism 22 is disclosed which brakes the rotation of a spool 15 on a double-bearing fishing reel. The brake mechanism 22 includes a flange portion 15a on the end of spool 15, two sets of three magnets 56, and a magnet positioning means 58. The magnetic positioning means 58 variably positions the magnets 56 between a first position, in which the magnets 56 are generally parallel to the surface of the flange portion 15a, and a second position in which the magnets 56 are generally perpendicular thereto. The rotation of the flange portion 15a causes the rotation of the magnetic flux from the magnets 56 to generate an eddy current. As a result, force is applied to the flange portion 15a in the direction opposite its rotation and brakes the rotation of spool 15.

Abstract: A structurally improved double-bearing fishing reel is disclosed. In the fishing reel, the magnet unit is mounted in opposition to and spaced apart from the conductive wheel of the spool and radially moves relative to the conductive wheel thus adjusting the gap between the magnet and the conductive wheel and preventing backlash of the reel. The above magnet unit reduces the axial size of the reel and achieves the recent trend of being a compact and light reel. As the magnet unit is placed in a conductive wheel receiving magnetic case, the magnetic line of force is prevented from leaking. The present invention also reduces the number of parts of a holding unit, that is used for holding both a handle shaft and a spool shaft bearing, thus reducing the cost of the reel.

  • Patent number: 5318245
Abstract: A fishing reel has a brake apparatus disposed between a reel body and a spool shaft. The brake apparatus includes a rotary element mounted on the spool shaft to be rotatable relative thereto and to the reel body, a first brake mechanism for transmitting a braking force from the reel body to the rotary element, and a second brake mechanism for transmitting the braking force from the rotary element to the spool shaft. When the spool reaches a maximum rotating speed, rotating speed of the rotary element does not increase greatly since the first brake mechanism slips due to inertia of the rotary element. Subsequently, the rotating speed of the rotary element increases with lapse of time. As a result, the first brake mechanism effectively applies a braking force to the spool after the spool reaches the maximum speed.
