Abstract: The present invention relates to a dragging device for restricting the one-way rotation of a spool of a fly reel. In a rotation-restricting device of a spool of a fly reel having a dragging device which can allow the spool to be attached to and detached from a shaft secured to a housing and which can restrict the one-way rotation of the spool, a sleeve is fitted on the shaft secured to the housing, a flange extends in the radial direction from one end of the sleeve, a flange cover is secured to the housing in the spool-attached direction, the flange makes contact between the flange cover and the housing, and a disk plate makes contact with the flange, whereby the pressure applied due to the rotation of a drag-adjusting knob mounted on the outside of the housing is transferred to the disk plate to be able to restrict the one-way rotation of the spool. In addition, a waterproof structure is provided on the friction surface of the disk plate to prevent infiltration of water.
Abstract: Fly fishing reels, a brake system, and a device for providing decreased tension on the fishing line and the leader are provided. In the system, the axle connecting the fly line spool to the brake system provides a shock absorbing system.
Abstract: A drag/free spool controller incorporated into a fishing reel that has a signal generator mechanically attached to the reel. When the spool spins the signal generator produces a voltage signal, and after a pre-determined number of rotations, the generated signal is compared to a pre-determined value to determine if the spooling corresponds to a fish strike. When the generated voltage signal exceeds the pre-determined value, indicating a fish strike, a solenoid attached to the reel is actuated to disengage the drag mechanism, placing the reel into a free spool position. This action allows the fish to run with the bait while the angler repositions himself to manually engage the drag to set the hook. If after a pre-determined interval the angler fails to manually engage the drag, the solenoid will do so automatically.

Abstract: A fishing reel (100) comprises a crank (110), a spool (120) connected to said crank (110), a pull-off brake mechanism (230, 230, 400, 400, 400) and a chassis (130). The pull-off brake mechanism (230, 230, 400, 400, 400) 5 and the crank (110) are interconnected such that a pretension of the pull-off brake mechanism (230, 230, 400, 400, 400) increases as the crank (110) is moved in a reeling-in direction. Moreover, the pretension of the pull-off pull-off brake mechanism (230, 230, 400, 400, 400) 10 also increases as the crank (110) is moved in a direction opposite to the reeling-in direction.
Abstract: A large arbor anti-reverse fly fishing reel provides by its handle a convenient variable drug control up to a present drag force. The drag knob is preferably designed as a four-vane propeller knob being arranged within a handle depression extending inside the spool. By means of a bayonet coupling, which also serves as a variable drag control device, the handle can be securely attached to the reel thereby locking the spool. The spool can be provided with omega-like perforations for a maximum stability, lightness and ventilation, said ventilation being optionally enhanced by an air turbine formed by said perforation and a portion of the frame and/or a portion of the handle extending inside the spool.
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to the field of fishing reels, and in particular, one type of reel described herein is a “bait cast” reel, specifically one designed for the particular styles of fishing commonly referred to as “flippin' and pitchin'”, wherein several improvements over the art are disclosed, including a highly durable and smooth line retainer element on the spool, a line retainer element, and a drag lock system that can be either adjustable or permanent.
Abstract: A spool brake mechanism 25 is a device for braking a spool. The spool brake mechanism 25 includes a spool brake member 40 and a control component 55. The control component 55 is configured to control a spool brake member with first braking force. The control component 55 is also configured to control the spool brake member with second braking force when tension detected by a tension detection member becomes equal to or less than a reference tension.
Abstract: A fishing reel includes an adjustable dynamic drag mechanism and a static drag mechanism connected to a brake mechanism. The static drag mechanism allows a user to select a predetermined amount of static drag whereas the manually adjustable dynamic drag mechanism allows the user to instantly add more drag. The fishing reel also allows a user to set a maximum total drag (i.e., the combination of the static and the maximum dynamic drag) such that the user cannot accidentally add too much dynamic drag that could result in the total drag exceeding the strength of the fishing line. The fishing reel preferably includes an adjustable leverage mechanism that allows the user to select the desired amount of mechanical advantage. In the preferred embodiment, the brake mechanism includes a ratchet plate, a yoke, and a friction ring disposed between the plate and the yoke.
Abstract: A locking preset mechanism for a fishing reel is provided by interlocking balls in the preset knob face and the depressions in the mating face of an axially moveable force transmitting means in the mechanism. In free spool, the knob can be rotated. In drag, the knob is locked against rotation.
Abstract: A drag washer of ceramic material is provided in a drag assembly for a fishing reel. The ceramic drag washer surprisingly provides the unique combination of hardness and surface finish to render desirable performance characteristics for a high quality drag assembly.
Abstract: A fly fishing reel includes a casing, a spool mounted rotatably in the casing, a handle connected to the spool via a connecting rod, an arcuate plate attached to the casing and formed with a plurality of angularly spaced apart retaining-holes, a drag adjustment lever having one end pivoted to the connecting rod, a positioning unit pivoted to the other end of the lever and having a retaining pin selectively and releasably engaging one of the retaining-holes so as to position the lever, and a releasing unit for disengaging the retaining pin from the selected one of the retaining-holes.
Abstract: A dual-bearing reel has a control knob for adjusting a braking force applied to a spool shaft. The reel includes a spring-biased click pin inside the control knob. The click pin is movably biased against a plate having concave grooves held within the control knob. The plate is arranged to rotate with the control knob. When the control knob is rotated, one end of the click pin strikes the concave grooves, thereby generating a click sound.
Abstract: A locking preset mechanism for a fishing reel is provided by interlocking serrations in the preset knob face and the mating face of an axially moveable force transmitting means in the mechanism. In free spool, the knob can be rotated. In drag, the knob is locked against rotation.
Abstract: The lining member according to the invention is structured such that fibers (43) are so disposed on a base member (41) as to extend in a direction substantially perpendicular to the surface of the base member (41).
Abstract: In a fly reel, drag is provided by use a helically wound wire spring mounted coaxially over a fixed post attached to the reel frame. The turns at one end of the helically wound spring loosely contact the fixed post, while at the other end of the spring the turns are in intimate contact with the post. One end of the spring is free and the other end is fixed to a spool axially straddling the spring-post combination. The spool contains a drag adjustment knob whose initial setting determines the angular travel of the spool until a pin on the knob contacts the free end of the spring. As line is stripped from the spool, the spool rotates and the loose turns incrementally tighten about the fixed post.
Abstract: A tension responsive fishing apparatus is provided which includes a pole member having an interior. The interior of the pole member is filled with a variable viscosity fluid, such as, electrical rheological fluid, magnetic-powder dispersed fluid, or the like. A controlled potential may be applied to the variable viscosity fluid which causes the variable viscosity fluid to vary in viscosity dependent on the amount of potential applied thereacross. In other words, depending on the amount of potential applied to the variable viscosity fluid disposed in the interior of the pole member, the flexure of the pole member may be selectively varied from extremes of high flexibility to high rigidity. An improved reel member is provided which varies a resistance applied to a bobbin member which is effected to control the release of fishing line. The varying resistance is controlled in response to input signals inputted dependent on tension sensed in the fishing line and/or a value selected by a user.
Abstract: A fishing reel is formed of a spool, a drag mechanism, a transmission which transmits rotation of the spool to the drag mechanism, and a one-way transmission mechanism mounted on the transmission for transmitting drive to the drag mechanism only when the spool rotates in a fishing line unwinding direction. The fishing reel also has a transmission switching mechanism capable of establishing a condition in which power transmission between the spool and the drag mechanism is broken.
Abstract: The apparatus spools a line carrying a weight for positioning a fishing lure at a desired depth in water for trolling. The apparatus has a motor which rotates a spool carrying the line supporting the weight. A brake automatically brakes the spool when the spool starts to unwind the line, which can occur when the motor is inoperative. Braking force on the spool can be finely adjusted to permit slipping and controlled unwinding, so that the line does not break should the weight become fouled or hung up on the bottom. Preferably, when winding up the weight, a clutch transmits torque between the motor and spool when the torque is below a slipping threshold torque. However, the clutch slips when the slipping threshold torque is exceeded and simultaneously generates an audible warning sound when slipping to protect the motor from overload if the weight becomes "hung up" when winding in. An alternative electrical circuit breaker can be substituted for the clutch to protect the motor.
Abstract: A braking force measuring mechanism is provided which includes a blocking member provided within a skirt of a spool for blocking rotation of the spool relative to a braking side member and an operating member provided at the outer periphery of the skirt for engaging or disengaging the blocking member with or from a retaining portion provided at the braking side member.
Abstract: The handle folding apparatus for fishing reels according to this invention allows the folding of the handle arm and also the secure coupling of the handle arm to the handle shaft of the spinning reel. A handle stopper is slidably installed between the bottom of the fork of the handle seat and the front end of the handle arm. The handle stopper has an engagement projection which is in contact with the engagement surface formed at the end of the handle arm, in order to produce a wedge effect to securely hold the handle arm without a play when in use or easily allow the handle arm to be folded when not in use. The handle stopper, which is slidably installed but not mounted with a pin as in the conventional apparatus, reliably eliminates plays between the handle arm and the handle shaft of the spinning reel and at the same time makes the handle folding mechanism comact and lightweight.
