Abstract: In a fishing reel, in addition to an externally adjustable brake system, an automatic spool brake system adjusts spool braking action dependent upon spool rotation speed to provide brake control for preventing backlash and to achieve better casting distance by reducing spool braking force at low spool rotation speeds. A brake assembly has a plurality of brake shoes and speed adjust shoes and is slidably mounted on a spool shaft. An adjustable brake ring selectively engages the brake shoes to provide a braking action to the spool. A spring is provided for biasing the brake assembly away from the brake. Centrifugal force causes the speed adjust shoes to migrate outwardly in contact with a conical surface. Abstract: Provided is an anti-backlash apparatus for a bait reel. The apparatus includes a brake shoe holder, a plurality of brake shoes, a stopper, a stopper holder, and locking parts. The brake shoe holder connects to a shaft of a spool. The plurality of brake shoes are radially fitted to the brake shoe holder, move outside, and get friction with a brake ring. The stopper is provided at one side of the brake shoe holder, and restricts movements of the brake shoes. The stopper holder connects to the stopper, and elastically reciprocates and moves left/right by a tension force of the spring. The locking parts are vertically bent at one-side ends of the brake shoes, and are locked at an inner circumference surface of the stopper, and restrict the movement of the brake shoe.

A brake housing is coupled to one end of the spool shaft to be rotated integrally with the spool and has sliding grooves. Brake elements are slidably received in the sliding grooves to be rotated integrally with the spool. A brake drum can be brought into frictional contact with the brake shoes to selectively limit rotation of the brake housing to some extent. The brake elements are positioned differently from one another by a predetermined angle along a circumferential direction and slidably received in the sliding grooves, respectively. A frictional force between outer end surfaces of the brake elements and an inner surface of the brake drum is selectively increased or decreased depending upon a rotation direction of the brake elements.

  • Patent number: 6908054
Abstract: A braking apparatus for a fishing reel. The braking apparatus includes a braking assembly. A contacting structure surrounds the braking assembly. A plurality of braking elements are slidably located within the braking assembly. The braking elements slidably move from a retracted position to an extended position. In the extended position, the braking elements make braking contact with the contacting structure. Each braking element has a protuberance that extends into an indentation on a selector. The selector is adapted to restrict selected braking elements from contacting the contacting structure. By rotating the selector, protuberances on selected braking elements are radially aligned with an outer wall segment of an indentation that is a desired distance from the selector axis and brake assembly axis. Therefore, selected braking elements are restricted from full radial movement, thereby controlling braking by selectively permitting greater or fewer braking elements from contacting the contacting structure.

By translating the shifters into different diametrical positions, the switching mechanism enables switching between an operative state wherein the shifters can come into contact with the brake element, and an inoperative state wherein the shifters cannot. The identification mark is for discriminating shifters switched into the operative state from shifters switched into the inoperative state.
