  • Patent number: 8066216
Abstract: A lever drag mechanism includes a friction disc, a drag disc, and a moving mechanism. The moving mechanism includes an urging member. The urging member urges a bearing by pressing an inner periphery thereof to allow an outer periphery of the bearing to make constant contact with a housing recess. When a drag lever is pivoted, the moving mechanism axially reciprocates the spool shaft to allow a second brake member to make contact with or to separate away from a first brake member.

  • Patent number: 7198219
Abstract: Fishing reel control apparatus, comprising a pulley carried for rotation in opposite directions; a ratchet wheel carried for rotation; a spring wire wrapped about a portion of the pulley and having a projecting end; a pivoted dog connected to the wire end so that endwise displacement of the wire effected by pulley rotation operates to release the dog from the ratchet wheel when the pulley is rotated in one direction, whereby a fishing line spool attached to the ratchet wheel is free to rotate, as the line pays out from the spool; and whereby when the pulley is rotated in opposite direction the wire is displaced to pivot the dog into engagement with the ratchet wheel, and the spool is rotated by the ratchet wheel to wrap the line as the pulley is rotated relative to the wire.

  • Patent number: 6964389
Abstract: A fishing reel includes an adjustable dynamic drag mechanism and a static drag mechanism connected to a brake mechanism. The static drag mechanism allows a user to select a predetermined amount of static drag whereas the manually adjustable dynamic drag mechanism allows the user to instantly add more drag. The fishing reel also allows a user to set a maximum total drag (i.e., the combination of the static and the maximum dynamic drag) such that the user cannot accidentally add too much dynamic drag that could result in the total drag exceeding the strength of the fishing line. The fishing reel preferably includes an adjustable leverage mechanism that allows the user to select the desired amount of mechanical advantage. In the preferred embodiment, the brake mechanism includes a ratchet plate, a yoke, and a friction ring disposed between the plate and the yoke.

  • Patent number: 6283394
Abstract: An automatic gravity controlled fishing line brake which is automatically activated when the fishing line goes slack. The fishing line is fed through an opening in an arm of the brake assembly. When the line is taught, such as when it is being cast or when a fish strikes, the tension on the line is used to elevate the arm and disengage the brake. When the fishing line tension is relieved, such as when the line hits the water or when a fish changes direction, gravity automatically lowers the arm and engages the brake on the fishing reel line spool. The brake pads prevent the fishing line spool from rotating and thus prevent the unraveling of fishing line.

  • Patent number: 5411218
Abstract: A drag mechanism for a fishing reel having a spool shaft supported at both the ends thereof. The drag mechanism employs rolling members as drag members so that the durability of the mechanism is enhanced, and the dragging function thereof is kept stable and good for a long time even under severe conditions under which sea water, sand or the like is likely to cling to the mechanism. One of drag member holders is secured to the spool of the reel so as to be rotated together with the spool. The other of the holders is secured to the spool shaft so as to be rotated together therewith. The tapered outside circumferential surface of one of the holders faces the tapered inside circumferential surface of the other of them. The rolling members are fitted in between the tapered surfaces. The drag mechanism can be used to drag the reverse rotation of the spool by frictional resistances to the rolling and sliding of the rolling members.
