Radially Applied Patents (Class 242/292)
  • Patent number: 9295243
Abstract: A ratchet wheel is provided for a fishing reel (e.g., a spinning reel or a dual-bearing reel). The ratchet wheel is mounted onto a first component of the fishing reel. The ratchet wheel being engagable with a claw member pivotally mounted to a second component of the fishing reel. The second component is configured to be rotatable relatively to the first component. The ratchet wheel has a mounting part and a plurality of teeth. The mounting part is configured to be mounted onto the first component. The teeth are radially disposed on one of an outer peripheral portion of the mounting part and an inner peripheral portion of the mounting part. The teeth extend from the one of the outer and inner peripheral portions. The teeth are configured such that two adjacent ones of the teeth selectively engage the claw member.

  • Patent number: 7637450
Abstract: A fly-fishing reel is provided for rewinding a fishing line on a spool, whose movement is limited, in at least one sense, by a braking mechanism. The fly-fishing reel includes a self-supporting structure and a spool. The self-supporting structure includes a central axis which bears on it the braking mechanism, which includes a first lateral containing ring, a brake ring concentrically arranged within an adjustment track or ring, and a second lateral containing ring. The brake ring is a split ring defining a guide slot along which a braking adjustment member is displaced. The braking adjustment member expands or contracts the brake ring. A blocking member is also concentrically mounted on the adjustment track or ring, which is in turn arranged without a relative sliding among them within the spool.

  • Patent number: 6964388
Abstract: A fishing reel includes a spool disk, a handle disk mounted coaxially and in juxtaposition with the spool disk, a winding handle or crank affixed to the handle disk, and a brake mechanism, including an actuator incorporated in the handle, for applying a drag braking torque between the spool disk and the handle disk. The braking torque is controllable by a user by squeezing the handle while holding the handle for cranking. Accordingly, the user does not have to let go of the winding handle in order to apply or vary the drag.

  • Patent number: 6193182
Abstract: A fly-fishing reel is equipped with a primary braking system, operated by actuating means separate from a handle allowing the fisherman to rotate the spool in a direction for winding the line, and an ancillary braking system, operable in addition to the primary braking system by means of the handle of the spool. The ancillary braking system comprises a pair of brake shoes which are eccentrically pivoted on the handle and which, upon rotation of the handle in direction opposite to that required for winding the line, are caused to pivot on the handle itself so that an outer edge frictionally engages the wall of a housing provided in the spool.

  • Patent number: 6116531
Abstract: A fishing reel drag mechanism includes a spool for a fishing line, a brake drum attached coaxially to the spool, and a resilient circular brake shoe positioned inside the brake drum. The outer diameter of the brake shoe is slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the brake drum. A gap is provided on the brake shoe, and a movable spreader is positioned in the gap. When the spreader is moved to a first position, the brake shoe is in a relaxed position spaced from the brake drum, so that the spool may rotate with zero drag. When the spreader is gradually moved to a second position, the gap is gradually expanded by the spreader, and the brake shoe is gradually expanded against the brake drum. The drag on the brake drum is thus adjusted by changing the width of the gap with the spreader. Grooves arranged concentrically around the brake shoe provide additional compliance which improves smoothness in drag application and the range of drag force provided.

  • Patent number: 5806776
Abstract: A friction brake for a fishing reel comprises an arcuate strip of bendable plastic that is cantilevered from a fixed flange of a fishing reel and extends over and generally concentrically with a rotating flange of the reel. When braking action is required to stop or restrain the playing-out of fishing line, pressure on the free edge of the brake causes contact between a brake surface and the outer periphery of the rotating reel flange. The degree of braking depends upon the area of the brake that is brought into contact with the rotating reel flange by the fisherman and upon the magnitude of force applied by the fisherman's hand onto the brake. The brake attaches at its fixed edge to the non-moving portion of the reel by means of an adhesive layer. Alternative embodiments that contact the fishing line extend from fixed portions of the reel.

  • Patent number: 5720441
Abstract: An attachment for controlling the distance of a casting lure attached to an end of a fishing line, includes a pressure pad extending from and connected to at least a portion of a distal lip of a spinning reel spool. During casting of the lure and line, the line on each revolution of the reel passes along an outer surface of the pressure pad, such that the fisherman can press his casting finger on the line against the pressure pad with varying intermittent finger pressure to increase and decrease drag on the line as the line spools off the spool and passes over the pressure pad. This assures greater casting accuracy so that the lure will land at a desired landing spot.

  • Patent number: 5417377
Abstract: A drum reel with a spool brake for balancing the differential rotational velocities of spool and fishline. The spool brake comprises an annular brake drum and a band brake having a pair of arcuate brake parts connected to each other and placed in the brake drum. A brake operating member, having a link engaging part, is placed between the free ends of the brake parts in order to bias the brake parts in opposed directions. A link is provided on one of the frames and engages the brake operating member for rotating this member, and has a slit engaging with the link engaging part such that rotation of the slit causes rotation of the member. A lever is interposed between the frames and hinged to the link such that the lever moves rotating the link and in turn rotating the brake operating member.
