    Abstract: A capstan winch (10) includes a reel assembly comprising a reel (12), which rotates, and two generally annular floating flanges (20) which are supported so that the planes in which they rotate converge towards one another, which has the effect of creating an apparent axial movement of the flanges with respect to the reel as they rotate together. The cylindrical surface of the reel (12) is provided with alternating lands (19) and grooves (18) and the floating flanges (20) have formed on them alternating inclined faces (26 and 24) which correspond with lands (19) and grooves (18). The inclined faces (24 and 26) are angled so that the faces (26) which correspond to each land (19) on the reel (12) are generally parallel to one another. The inclined faces (24) which correspond to each groove (18) converge. Consequently, substantial lateral forces are exerted on a cable being wound onto the reel (12) only when the cable overlies the grooves (18) and frictional forces on the cable are minimized.

The rotor includes a rotor unit, a bail arm, and an inertia-imparting ring. The rotor unit has a cylindrical portion that is rotatably mounted on the reel unit, and first and second rotor arms that extend forward from the rear edge of the cylindrical portion. The bail arm is pivotably mounted on the front tips of both arms, and guides the fishing line onto the spool. The inertia-imparting member is a member for providing inertia and is detachably mounted on the rotor unit. The rotor is designed to be lightweight, and can be utilized in both situations where the rotational feel is a priority, and where powering efficiency is a priority.

    Abstract: A spincast fishing reel has a reel frame to which front and rear covers are attached. The rear cover includes a pivotable thumb button which is depressed by a user when fishing line is to be cast. The front cover closes the face of the reel, but defines a forward opening through which the fishing line extends. A normally nonrotatable line spool is located inside of the front cover on a mounting hub of the reel frame. Fishing line is wound onto the line spool by a rotatable pickup head located forward of the line spool. An annular shroud element at least partially covers the outer circumferential surface of the pickup head when fishing line is being wound. As a result, the fishing line will travel between the pickup head and the inside surface of the shroud element to facilitate engagement thereof by the pickup head.

    Abstract: A spinning reel comprising a reel body including a rear wall and a side wall, a handle attached to the reel body, a spool connected to a forward portion of the reel body through a spool shaft to be reciprocable fore and aft relative to the reel body, and an oscillating mechanism mounted in the reel body. The oscillating mechanism includes a screw shaft driven by the handle, the screw shaft being insertable into the reel body through the rear wall, a slider engaged with a helical groove formed on the screw shaft and connected to the spool shaft, the slider being operable to convert rotation of the screw shaft to a reciprocating motion in a fore and aft direction of the reel body for transmission to the spool shaft, and guide rods fixed to the reel body for prohibiting displacement of the slider transversely of the screw shaft, the guide rods being insertable into the reel body through the rear wall.

    Abstract: A drag adjustment mechanism in a fishing reel having a housing, a deck plate and a line-carrying spool at least partially within the housing. The drag adjustment mechanism includes a structure for imparting drag forces of varying magnitude upon the line-carrying spool to resist rotation of the line carrying spool. A drag screw is rotatably axially movable to selectively determine the degree of resistance on rotation of the line-carrying spool applied by the drag imparted structure. An axially enlarged portion of the drag screw arrests axial movement of the drag screw by abutting the deck plate. An internally threaded drag adjustment knob threadably receives the drag screw to move the drag screw axially through rotation of the drag knob. The drag adjustment knob has a recess therein coaxial with an axis about which the drag screw is mounted. A spring activated retaining cup extends between the recess in the drag adjustment knob and a recess in the inside surface of the fishing reel housing.

A movable spinner head bears the line against a part of the line snubbing surface on the housing to thereby prevent payout of line from the fishing reel as a rod with the reel thereon is cocked for a cast. The part of the line snubbing surface has integrally formed texturing. The texturing accounts for a relatively high friction surface against which fishing line can be snubbed by the spinner head so that the line can be positively trapped against the surface to facilitate the performance of a cast without potentially damaging pressure being applied to the line.

    Abstract: A line control device for axial delivery casting reels of the type that include a spool and a line pick-up (44) having a bail and a line guide or roller (42). The device comprises a mechanical finger (16) pivotally supported and having a pivotal axis approximately parallel with the reel spool axis. The finger is positioned to move in front of the line guide. Thus, the finger catches and holds casting line (50) extending from the guide as the finger moves to a line engaged position. Included are means operated by the thumb of the user for moving the finger to the line engaged position. A spring (40) urges the finger toward a line disengaged position so that the line can be instantly released for a cast. The device can also serve with open face driven spool reels (52) in a dual role; as a line pickup for winding and as a line release finger for casting.
