Publication number: 20020175238Abstract: The object of the present invention is to provide a magnetic tape cartridge, in which the mating of the lower half and the upper half can be easily performed and is applicable to automated assembly, when the magnetic tape cartridge having a sliding door is assembled. The rib 81 projects from the upper section of the first guide wall 24a in the direction of the opposite second guide wall 24b. On the other hand, the groove 55, which faces the rib 81, is carved on the inner side surface 54a of the sliding door 5. The rib 81 engages with the groove 55, thereby restricting the vertical displacement of the sliding door 5. Also the engagement of the rib 81 and the groove 55 guides the sliding door 5 in the guide channel freely.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 11, 2002Publication date: November 28, 2002Applicant: FUJI PHOTO FILM CO., LTD.Inventors: Yasushi Hatano, Hidetoshi Yamamoto, Hideaki Shiga, Kouta Kitamura, Seiji Tsuyuki, Yusuke Ishihara

Publication number: 20020158161Abstract: A single reel with magnetic tape wound thereon is housed in a case. A restraining member, for restricting rotation of the reel by moving toward or away from the reel, is urged in a restraining direction by an urging member. The pushing-up portions of a releasing member are inserted into the through holes bored in the reel gear of the reel 2 so that the lower ends can abut a driving gear. The releasing member moves the restraining member in a releasing direction by moving according to the chucking operation of drive-side rotation drive means. In this manner, reel-rotation restraining means allows rotation of the reel when being used and restricts the rotation when not being used. In this construction, each of the through holes is bored between the tooth edges of the reel gear so that the releasing member can perform a reliable releasing operation.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 18, 2002Publication date: October 31, 2002Applicant: FUJI PHOTO FILM CO., LTD.Inventors: Kiyoo Morita, Daisuke Takahashi, Hideaki Shiga, Seiji Tsuyuki, Yusuke Ishihara

Patent number: 6318657Abstract: A tape cartridge is provided with reliable reel lock and motor/reel coupling mechanisms whose functions are both accomplished during a single motion of the cartridge relative to the drive motor. The motor/reel coupling includes a circular set of gear teeth on the bottom of the tape reel which meshes with a complementary set of gear teeth on a motor coupling rotated by the motor when the cartridge is loaded into the tape drive and the cartridge and motor are moved towards each other. An engagement force to maintain the coupling is provided by an engagement spring in the cartridge which biases the reel towards the motor. Reel locking is accomplished by providing a second circular set of gear teeth on a top side of the tape reel which meshes with a complementary set of gear teeth provided on a slidably mounted locking bracket inside the tape cartridge. A lock spring normally biases the locking bracket towards the top of the tape reel, thus locking the reel when the cartridge is not engaged with the motor.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2001Date of Patent: November 20, 2001Assignee: Seagate Removable Storage Solutions LLCInventor: Ashok B. Patent number: 6234416Abstract: A tape cartridge is provided with reliable reel lock and motor/reel coupling mechanisms whose functions are both accomplished during a single motion of the cartridge relative to the drive motor. A lock spring normally biases the locking bracket towards the top of the tape reel, thus locking the reel when the cartridge is not engaged with the motor.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 2000Date of Patent: May 22, 2001Assignee: Seagate Removable Storage Solutions LLCInventor: Ashok B. Patent number: 6183143Abstract: A cassette and method of use, which cassette can receive and rotatably mount a roll of photosensitive medium web. The cassette includes a housing having a first section and a second section with respective, mating margins extending in a transverse direction between opposite ends of the cassette. The second section is movable with respect to the first section between a closed position in which the mating margins abut one another so that the housing is maintained light tight, and an open position in which the margins are spaced apart. The margins can define between them a slit through which the web of photosensitive medium can pass. The cassette further has a lock assembly with at least one lock member movable between a locked position in which it restrains the second section from moving from the closed position, and a released position in which the cassette can be opened.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1998Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventors: Steven R. Patent number: 6062500Abstract: A reel for a tape drive and cartridge is provided herein. The reel can be utilized as a take-up reel for the tape drive and/or a feed reel for the cartridge. The reel includes a hub which receives the storage tape and a pair of guide bars which guide the storage tape onto the hub. Importantly, the guide bars inhibit lateral tape movement during transfer of the storage tape between the take-up reel and the feed reel. This minimizes data recovery errors and increases the life of the storage tape.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1998Date of Patent: May 16, 2000Assignee: Quantum CorporationInventor: Paul Coles

Patent number: 6042039Abstract: A tape reel device includes a spool in the form of a hollow cylinder having a hollow portion for winding a tape material around a peripheral surface thereof, a casing rotatably accommodating the spool, and a braking mechanism in sliding contact with the spool. The baking mechanism applies back tension to the tape material being rolled out from the spool. The braking means comprises a sliding-contact member brought into contact with the spool in an axial direction such that the spool is circumferentially slidable on the sliding-contact member, and a spring arranged within the hollow portion of the spool and supported by the casing for urging the sliding-contact member in the axial direction.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1997Date of Patent: March 28, 2000Assignee: Seiko Epson CorporationInventors: Yoshikiyo Furuya, Chie Ohshima, Hideki Sakano

Patent number: 6043963Abstract: A low profile tape cartridge has a reel which rotates within an outer protective shell. The reel has flanges which define a slot containing a roll of magnetic tape. The shell only surrounds the reel along its circumference and the flat upper and lower surfaces of the flanges are exposed. When assembled, the reel and shell have axial thicknesses which are substantially equal. The shell moves between locked and unlocked positions for engaging and disengaging the reel. The cartridge uses and fits within a shell retainer for creating uniform spacing around the reel when the shell is in the unlocked position. The tape is accessed by loading a cartridge into the retainer in a tape drive. The tape drive unlocks the shell to rotate the reel and extract the tape. After use, the tape is retracted onto the reel and the cartridge is then returned to the locked position.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1998Date of Patent: March 28, 2000Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: James Howard Eaton
