  • Patent number: 11649128
Abstract: A dunnage conversion system for making a coil of dunnage from a sheet stock includes a coiler, a movable dancer upstream of the coiler and interposed in a path of the sheet stock, and a controller communicatively coupled to each of the coiler and the movable dancer. The coiler is configured to wind the sheet stock, and the controller is configured to control the speed of the coiler based on the position of the movable dancer to control tension of the sheet stock upstream of the coiler. The sheet stock drawn about the movable dancer may be a slit-sheet stock having a plurality of slits configured to expand under tension applied in a feed direction. The controller may be configured to control expansion of the slit-sheet stock upstream of the coiler allowing conversion of the sheet stock into a coil of relatively less dense dunnage prior to or during winding.

  • Patent number: 11142422
Abstract: A method of operating an off-line finishing device for fiber webs, in particular an off-line slitter-winder for winding fiber webs, wherein in operating the off-line device the running speed is automatically optimized to minimize cost of web breaks. The method considers the costs associated with a web break during unwinding in addition to the cost benefit of maximizing web unwind speed so as to maximize machine utilization. The method determines an optimal web break stopping time in a web break situation and how often a web break is predicted. Automatic optimization incorporates limitations including the maximum rotation speed of the parent roll, the maximum speed of the fiber web being unwound, the maximum positive torque which can be applied to the parent roll to accelerate the parent roll to a rotation rate which produces a desired web speed, and maximum braking torque.

  • Patent number: 8714472
Abstract: Registration and inspection systems and methods for use on a winder are disclosed. The systems and methods include scanning a region proximate a winding module with one or more sensors to determine a product defect. The product defect is then associated with a winding process parameter, such as percent roll build information or the identity of the particular sensor to first detect the defect. The winding process parameter is used to classify the defect into one or more defect profiles. The defect profiles can be based at least in part on segmenting the roll build of a web onto a winding module into a plurality of inspection windows and segmenting a plurality of sensors into a plurality of inspection sensor segments.

  • Publication number: 20110006148
Abstract: A tensioner for controlling tension in a continuous web being wound onto a rewind roller after the web is processed, for example after printing on labels carried on the web. The tensioner receives the web from a processor and has a slack sensor between the processor and the input of the tensioner. The slack sensor indicates when the slack is a selected minimum, and the web is clamped by the tensioner. After a selected time, which is before the slack sensor indicates a maximum slack is present, the motor driving the rewind roller is stopped and the web is unclamped. After unclamping the web, the rewind roll is again driven at a speed to take up more of the web than that which is driven by the processor, to wrap the web around the core until the slack sensor indicates the slack in the web is at a minimum.

  • Patent number: 6828743
Abstract: A method and a device for controlling a winder, where the winding torque (Tw), during winding, is controlled as a function of the desired tractive force in the material to be wound. During winding, repeatedly is calculated which value a quantity (Vl), influencing the winding torque (Tw), has to adopt in order to obtain a desired tractive force (Fw), and an adjustment of the said quantity (V1) is carried out, the calculated value being used as an objective value. Preferably, the calculation is done by an algorithm, expressing the said quantity as a function of the desired tractive force (Fw), as a function of one or more fixed parameters which are characteristic for winding up material or for the winder, and as a function of one or more variable parameters, being measured or calculated during winding. The device also relates to a winder comprising a winding body (1), (2) for winding a material, a drive device (3,9),(4,10) for driving this winding body (1), (2) an a control device.

  • Patent number: 6402076
Abstract: A system and method is provided for developing speed and rotation count profiles for controlling the spindle drive on a towel winder system for winding rolls of paper, such as tissue or towel. The system and method monitors accumulated paper sheet length metered onto the winding spindle to control desired sheet count and finished roll dimension data. The system and method utilizes the accumulated paper sheet length and the desired finished roll data to calculate an instantaneous diameter. The instantaneous diameter calculation includes determining an effective thickness of the roll based on two forms of calculating finished roll cross-sectional area. The system and method also includes monitoring the actual line surface speed. The instantaneous diameter and the actual line surface speed are used to generate a speed reference signal and an inertia compensation signal. An outer compensation loop can be employed to trim the speed reference signal so that the revolution count can be controlled.
