Publication number: 20120037742Abstract: A winding procedure has been developed that results in substantially uniform material properties from the outside diameter to the core of a wound roll of elastomeric webs produced by vertical film lamination (VFL) or stretch bond lamination (SBL) or as registered film. The web material is wound onto the roll in accordance with a wound on tension (WOT) profile that varies with the diameter of the wound web in a manner that was calculated using WOT transposition that is based on a modified version of Hakiel's nonlinear model for wound roll stresses. A constant WOT winding profile is corrected to obtain a compensated WOT winding profile that can be employed to wind the material into a roll that exhibits properties (including MD stress in the web) that are substantially uniform thru-roll. This resulting controlled winding technique has immediate application for webs that are converted for child care products, adult care products, and infant care products.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 3, 2011Publication date: February 16, 2012Applicant: KIMBERLY-CLARK WORLDWIDE, INC.Inventors: Neal Jay Michal, III, Balaja Kovil-Kandadai, Robert James Coxe

Patent number: 8070916Abstract: Method and device for producing a web of tissue. In the method, the web of tissue is led over at least one drying cylinder, doctored off the latter with a creping doctor and then wound up by way of a winding device. The web of tissue is supported at least largely over the entire distance between creping doctor and winding device on one side by a transfer device, so that there is only a short free web draw, while its other side is free. The device includes at least one drying cylinder, a creping doctor arranged on the drying cylinder and a winding device that winds up the web of tissue. Between the creping doctor and the winding device, a transfer device at least largely bridges the entire distance which supports the web of tissue on one side. There is a short free web draw, but its other side is left free.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2004Date of Patent: December 6, 2011Assignee: Voith Patent GmbHInventors: Thomas Scherb, Luiz Carlos Silva

Patent number: 7114673Abstract: A stop command detecting unit detects an operation transition from fast forwarding/rewinding modes to a stop mode, a take-up side reel braking unit and a supply side reel braking unit start a braking operation based on the stop command, and a driving motor of the take-up side reel is driven at a specified current value set by a motor current value setting unit for a specified time set by a current adding time setting unit to provide the take-up side reel with rotary torque in the winding direction. Hence, the supply side reel rotates together with the take-up side reel until the supply side reel is stopped, thereby preventing occurrence of a slack on the tape.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2003Date of Patent: October 3, 2006Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventor: Naohisa Tanabe

Patent number: 6828743Abstract: A method and a device for controlling a winder, where the winding torque (Tw), during winding, is controlled as a function of the desired tractive force in the material to be wound. During winding, repeatedly is calculated which value a quantity (Vl), influencing the winding torque (Tw), has to adopt in order to obtain a desired tractive force (Fw), and an adjustment of the said quantity (V1) is carried out, the calculated value being used as an objective value. Preferably, the calculation is done by an algorithm, expressing the said quantity as a function of the desired tractive force (Fw), as a function of one or more fixed parameters which are characteristic for winding up material or for the winder, and as a function of one or more variable parameters, being measured or calculated during winding. The device also relates to a winder comprising a winding body (1), (2) for winding a material, a drive device (3,9),(4,10) for driving this winding body (1), (2) an a control device.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2002Date of Patent: December 7, 2004Assignee: N.V. Publication number: 20030226928Abstract: Apparatus and method for controlling the winding of a sheet of material such as paper and film finished consumer products into a log using an adjustable reference profile. The apparatus and method may provide improved process control, product quality, manufacturing production rate and/or process repeatability. The apparatus and method provide more consistent finished log properties by measuring at least one process parameter during the manufacturing process. The process parameter is then correlated with the desired finished product characteristics and an appropriate correction is made to the reference profile.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 10, 2002Publication date: December 11, 2003Applicant: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventors: Kevin B. Patent number: 6409117Abstract: The present invention includes systems and methods for monitoring the spooling area of a rotatable reel for winding or unwinding an elongated material, for example, a cable. The monitoring system has a detector for sensing the presence and position of a cable surface or object or operator positioned between the detector and the reel. The detector can control rotation of the reel directly, or send a position signal to a computer where the position signal indicates the detected presence and/or position. The computer can have a memory and/or a processor for respectively storing and analyzing the position signal. The computer is operative to compare the position signal to previously received position signals to determine a condition, for example, the amount of cable on the reel, the presence of any object, and/or the existence of a safety-threatening condition. The computer can generate an output signal for use in, for example, controlling the reel speed and/or torque, or the application of brakes.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 2001Date of Patent: June 25, 2002Assignee: Corning Cable Systems LLCInventors: Mark W. Patent number: 6402076Abstract: A system and method is provided for developing speed and rotation count profiles for controlling the spindle drive on a towel winder system for winding rolls of paper, such as tissue or towel. The system and method monitors accumulated paper sheet length metered onto the winding spindle to control desired sheet count and finished roll dimension data. The system and method utilizes the accumulated paper sheet length and the desired finished roll data to calculate an instantaneous diameter. The instantaneous diameter calculation includes determining an effective thickness of the roll based on two forms of calculating finished roll cross-sectional area. The system and method also includes monitoring the actual line surface speed. The instantaneous diameter and the actual line surface speed are used to generate a speed reference signal and an inertia compensation signal. An outer compensation loop can be employed to trim the speed reference signal so that the revolution count can be controlled.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2000Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Assignee: Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Peter Harold Werner
