  • Patent number: 7926769
Abstract: A passive/reactive device protests a Payload from injury or damage due to the shock caused by impact or explosion. When the vehicle or structure mounting the Payload receives a shock pulse, the invention limits the acceleration transmitted from the vehicle or structure to the Payload to an acceptably low, user-adjustable level which is substantially constant or is some other user-adjustable force-displacement function. The invention is capable of doing so even when the peak magnitude of the imposed shock is on the order of thousands of G's, with a rise time to peak on the order of microseconds. The invention can be embodied to operate passively, without any external source of power, sensor system, or CPU, although they can be added to improve certain usability features. The invention also absorbs or dissipates the shock energy in substantially the minimum distance possible without exceeding the user-defined acceleration limit on the Payload.

In accordance with one embodiment, the upper ball joint assembly includes a socket configured to be located within a keyed opening in the suspension system upper frame, and a ball joint configured to be secured to a suspension rod extending from the suspension system lower frame through the opening in the upper frame. The socket includes a seating surface which, in one embodiment, is substantially spherical shaped and concave. A slot extends from the socket opening to a periphery of the socket. The slot is configured so that the suspension rod can be moved through the slot and located within the socket opening. By orienting the socket so that the slot extends radially outward from a center axis of the wash tub, the suspension rod is allowed more movement relative to the socket since the rod can also move within the slot.

Abstract: A plurality of snubbers for a washing machine dampens and isolates unbalanced load excursions by using the positive displacement pumping action of air being forced through an orifice in each snubber. One end of each snubber is attached to the washing machine housing and the other end attached to the tub or mounting platform and has a resilient middle portion sidewall defining a cavity that changes in volume to minimize the effects basket excursions caused by unbalanced loads. The snubber sidewall defines an orifice providing a passageway for egress and ingress of air during the change in volume. The orifice meters air so that the resiliency of the snubber is greater for low frequency excursions than for high frequency excursions to thereby function as a damper for low frequency excursions and as a gas spring for high frequency excursions.

The inventive coupling member is preferably made of an elastomeric material that is impregnated with a conductive material such as metal or carbon. Electromagnetic emissions from the vehicle ignition system are reduced through the electrical coupling between the underside of the vehicle and the vehicle exhaust system which thereby improves radio reception by preventing or reducing the vehicle ignition system noise that otherwise interferes with radio reception.

Abstract: A washing machine having the cabinet decoupled from the suspension system in order to eliminate undesirable resonance mode walking conditions. The cabinet is frictionally attached to the washer supporting feet. With this arrangement, the effect of the cabinet on the washer/floor natural frequency is eliminated, thereby increasing such natural frequency above the spin speed of the washer. In this way, walking typically occurring at the natural frequency (i.e. when the spin speed matches the natural frequency of the washer and floor system) is prevented. This arrangement further provides decreased cabinet vibration and noise during operation at typical spin speeds.

With this arrangement, a statically determinant suspension is provided. The substantially continuous contact between the supporting feet and the floor (i.e. the feet automatically conform to the floor surface) increases the frictional resistance, thereby decreasing the probability of frictional walking.
