  • Publication number: 20020074525
Abstract: A container for storing and transporting needle cartridges containing radioactive materials used for medical procedures is disclosed. Such needle cartridges may include a radioactive shielding material which contains a portion of the radioactivity emitted by the radioactive material. The container of the present invention has an upper portion and a lower portion, and at least one of the portions includes a radiation shielding material, such as lead, steel or other appropriate shielding materials. Needle cartridges containing radioactive material are placed within the container for storage and shipping. The container secures the needle cartridges against lateral movement within the container to protect them from breakage or release of the radioactive materials contained in the needle cartridges. The radiation shielding material of the lower portion of the container may cooperate with the radiation shielding material of the device to container more of the emitted radiation that is contained by the device alone.

  • Patent number: 6366633
Abstract: The invention describes a storage and dispatch container for variable quantities of radioactive miniature radiation sources as well as a locking and opening device for the said storage and dispatch container and is applicable for the transport of radioactive miniature radiation sources in well organized and undamaged condition. The dispatch containers serve as storage depots at the same time and meet the requirements of radiation safety with passive protection from loss. Their construction permits automatic filling or transfer of the contents using a corresponding device. The container is characterized in that a capillary tube (8) for the uptake of the radiation sources (15) is arranged in the main body (1) of the container and that the main body (1) exhibits a lower end-piece (2) with a fluid-medium connection (4) as well as an upper end-piece (3) with an input/output opening (3a) for the radiation sources (15), which can be locked by means of a locking mechanism (10).

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of confining pollution generated in the top volume and/or in the bottom volume of an enclosure filled with a fluid, i.e. either a gas, which is in general air, or a liquid, which is in general water, the method confining the pollution by thermal stratification. In said method the mean temperature of said top volume is maintained higher than the mean temperature of said bottom volume by an amount that is sufficient to ensure that said two volumes are separated by a turbulent intermediate zone of narrow width, referred to as the “mixing zone”, within which a steep temperature gradient is maintained; said intermediate zone constituting a virtual confinement barrier in a horizontal plane. The present invention also relates to apparatus associated with the method.

Abstract: The invention is a product and a process for making a fireproof, impact limiter, homogeneous aggregate material for casting inside a hazardous material shipping container, or a double-contained Type-B nuclear shipping container. The homogeneous aggregate material is prepared by mixing inorganic compounds with water, pouring the mixture into the void spaces between an inner storage containment vessel and an outer shipping container, vibrating the mixture inside the shipping container, with subsequent curing, baking, and cooling of the mixture to form a solidified material which encapsulates an inner storage containment vessel inside an outer shipping container. The solidified material forms a protective enclosure around an inner storage containment vessel which may store hazardous, toxic, or radioactive material.
