Patent number: 6029682Abstract: A spool slides in a bore to open and close a valve. An armature moveable relative to the spool is biased in a first direction. A coupling biasing member biases the armature and the spool toward each other. When a solenoid is actuated the armature and the spool move in a second direction opposite the first direction until the spool forcibly engages a seat in the bore, closing the valve and stopping the spool movement. The armature continues to move in the second direction, causing the coupling to apply additional force to keep the spool engaged against the seat, until the armature reaches a second position where it forcibly engages with the spool. This stops the armature from moving further in the second direction, but allows the stationary armature to continue applying force to keep the spool engaged against the seat. When the solenoid is de-energized the armature bias sends the armature back in the first direction until it strikes the spool, causing the spool to rapidly unseat, thus opening the valve.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1998Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Stephen R. Patent number: 5791328Abstract: A valve, especially for use in a paintball gun which includes a pressure chamber bore for receiving gas from a source, an exhaust bore which leads to a barrel, and a valve chamber bore between the pressure chamber bore and exhaust bore. The valve includes a body mounted in the valve chamber bore with a flow path between the pressure chamber and exhaust bores, and a cupseal seat on the upstream side of the flow path. A valve stem passes through a portion of the flow path and is slidably supported by a support nose, and presents an actuation surface at one end, and supports a cupseal to mate with the seat at the other end. The cupseal has radial guide legs to closely and slidably contact the pressure chamber bore to aid alignment. The cupseal will normally be held against the seat by gas pressure and/or a spring; to open the valve, the gun may be provided with a hammer which is released to strike the actuation surface of the valve stem, to unseat the cupseal and allow gas to flow into the barrel.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1997Date of Patent: August 11, 1998Inventor: Aaron K. Patent number: 5582206Abstract: A self wear compensating valve for controlling flow of a fluid employs seals for sealing between relatively moving parts. In one of the parts, an annular recess is formed. A conformable sealing member is placed in the recess, and a spring biased to expel the conformable sealing member and press it against a sealing surface on the other part is provided. An O-ring placed on the outside of the conformable sealing member prevents leakage of fluid through the recess outside of the conformable sealing member. As the conformable sealing member is worn away, after many cycles of the valve, the spring continues to press it against the sealing surface, while the O-ring continues to prevent leakage of fluid outside the conformable sealing member. A rotary valve suitable for railroad brake applications is provided, which controls flow of fluid from a supply to the brake cylinder, and provides for exhaust of fluid from the brake cylinder. The valve has a supply port, a delivery port and an exhaust.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1995Date of Patent: December 10, 1996Assignee: Westinghouse Air Brake CompanyInventor: Daniel Brillant

Patent number: 5573034Abstract: The present invention provides an air valve (10) for inflating and deflating an inflatable. The air valve (10) includes a housing floor (16) with air ports (36, 38), and a slide bar (12) with an air passageway (54) formed therein. The slide bar (12) is supported on the floor (16) by seal rings (92) surrounding the ports (36, 38) and is biased into a center position by a spring (94) positioned in a spring well (28) in the slide bar (12) or the floor (16). Pins (50, 52) project into the spring well (28) and engage opposite ends of the spring (94). A stem extends from a tilt button (66) into a socket (48) on the slide bar (12). When the button (66) is tilted, it moves the slide bar (12), compressing the spring (94) and aligning the ports (36, 38) and the passageway (54) to allow air to pass through the valve (10). The slide bar (12) is prevented from tilting by a stabilizer frame (82) or housing shoulders (220).Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1995Date of Patent: November 12, 1996Assignee: GT Development CorporationInventors: Denny Gabrlik, John M. Patent number: 5474104Abstract: A refueling check valve assembly which provides for rapid, efficient, and safe refueling of compressed natural gas powered vehicles is provided and includes a receptacle adapted to mate with a fuel supply nozzle and a valve body having first and second gas flow passages therethrough. The respective first ends of the first and second gas flow passages communicate with the receptacle, while the respective second ends of the first and second gas flow passages are adapted to communicate with a fuel storage vessel, typically through a fuel supply line. A check valve is positioned in the first gas flow passage of the valve body and is normally biased into a closed position to prevent the flow of gas through the first gas flow passage. The check valve opens in response to a flow of fuel under pressure, permitting the flow of gas to the fuel storage vessel. A by-pass valve is also provided in the second gas flow passage in the valve body for depressurizing the fuel system prior to servicing.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1995Date of Patent: December 12, 1995Assignee: Superior Valve CompanyInventors: Robin N. Patent number: 5331998Abstract: A suction valve for a gas compressor includes a cylindrical valve guide cage with plurality of rows of valve guides, each with a corresponding poppet valve slidably movable therein. Each valve guide communicates with a compressor cylinder. A concentric cylindrical valve seat chair with a like plurality of rows of valve seats surrounds the valve guide cage. Each valve seat communicates with a suction chamber. A plurality of openings extending through the guide cage are spaced between the rows of valve guides. To unload the compressor, the valve guide cage is movable relative to the valve seat chair, thus unseating the poppet valves and effectively opening the compressor cylinder to the suction chamber. A first embodiment uses a pneumatic cylinder to move the valve guide cage longitudinally while a second embodiment uses a rotary crank to move the valve guide cage rotationally.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1993Date of Patent: July 26, 1994Inventor: Lauren D.
