Patent number: 5052440Abstract: An in-line valve is employed in a droplet generator for sharply cutting off the flow of liquid and preventing drips from forming at the outlet of the generator. In order to effect valve action, the interior surface of a droplet-forming orifice plate is machined optically flat. A movable valve plate having openings therein, corresponding to the pattern of orifices in the orifice plate, is positioned in abutting relationship to the interior surface of the orifice plate; and its interface surface is likewise machined optically flat so that the interface forms a liquid seal. When the valve plate is moved to a position where openings therein are in registry with the orifices, a droplet stream is generated. However, when the valve plate is moved in shear translation, registration between the openings therein and the orifices no longer exists and the flow of fluid therebetween is quickly stopped.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1989Date of Patent: October 1, 1991Assignee: Grumman Aerospace CorporationInventors: Arthur M. Patent number: 4815698Abstract: A hard seated globe valve assembly for use in servicing high and low temperature fluids. The valve includes a moveable stem attached at one end to a tapered plug of hard material. An equally hard seat having a tapered surface is mounted for mating engagement with the plug when the valve is closed. The seat is located in a partition that separates the globe-shaped body into two chambers having fluid inlet-outlet orifices. An annular ring is mounted between the bearing end of the stem and the plug so that the plug is resiliently engaged in the seat when the valve is closed. It has been found that hard seated valves tend to be difficult to open or lose their sealing abilities when servicing extreme temperature fluids due to the expansion and contraction when the valve is heated and cooled. The resilience of the annular ring prevents this problem by permitting the plug to adjust during expansion and contraction, thus making it easier to open the valve after cooling and precluding loss of sealing during heating.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1988Date of Patent: March 28, 1989Assignee: Strahman Valves, Inc.Inventor: Robert Palmer

In preferred embodiments of the invention, O-rings function as the cushion. Additionally, a seat bearing may be impregnated in polytetraflouroethylene.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1987Date of Patent: March 28, 1989Assignee: I.W. Industries, Inc.Inventor: Frank Antoniello

Patent number: 3985335Abstract: This invention relates to a ball type shut off valve. The valve includes a body having a flow passage therethrough defining a seat. A ball is loosely held within the flow passageway by the two ends of a shaped, flat strip spring which is held in a longitudinal diametral slot, in a cylindrical shaft positioned in and sealed to the body, with the axis of the shaft at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the body, and to the flow path of the fluid. Rotation of the shaft causes the strip spring to rotate and to control the position of the ball relative to the seat. Rotation in one direction causes a first end of the spring to move the ball away from the seat. Rotation of the shaft and the spring in the other direction causes the second end of the spring to move onto the sea and to hold the ball against the seat by the compliance of the second end of the spring.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1975Date of Patent: October 12, 1976Assignee: Continental Industries, Inc.Inventor: Donald J. Patent number: 3966235Abstract: Sealing apparatus seals off between first and second member faces and about registered ports opening at the faces, the members being relatively movable. The apparatus comprises:A. first and second concentric tubular inserts carried by one of the members for relative telescopic movement, the inserts extending about the port in said one member, at least one of the inserts having an end portion projecting endwise outwardly relative to said one member to be forcibly engaged by the other member for inwardly displacing said one insert in response to said member relative movement toward one another, andB. elastomeric means located between said inserts to transfer compressive force from said one insert to the other insert in response to said inward displacement of the one insert, and to be compressively urged in an outward direction into annular sealing engagement with the face of said other member about the port mouth therein.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1975Date of Patent: June 29, 1976Assignee: Hydril CompanyInventor: George E. Patent number: 3955591Abstract: A reciprocating sliding gate valve with tubular housing and one movable and one stationary gate having multiple fluid conducting ports, which overlap with solid wall partitions spaced between said ports when the valve is closed following sliding, reciprocating displacement of the movable gate, and wherein the interface between the stationary gate and the tubular body bore is sealed by the usual pipe line flange gasket; both gates and other internal parts being readily removable through one end of the tubular housing bore for ease of assembly.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 1975Date of Patent: May 11, 1976Inventor: Hans D.
