Cam Or Wedge Patents (Class 251/203)
  • Patent number: 5003943
Abstract: An engine air intake shutoff apparatus includes a frame that can be attached to and supported by an engine air intake passage such as an engine blower housing over the engine air intake passage. A baffle plate having rollers extending above its surface slidably moves along the side panels of the frame. Rotatable, retractable baffle arms direct the movement of the baffle plate within the housing. The baffle plate has a mitered leading edge that mates with a wedge on the interior of the frame opposite the leading edge of the baffle plate. Baffle arms are secured to rotatable operating shafts at a point above the attachment point of the baffle plate to the baffle arm so that downward force is exerted on the end of the baffle plate. The combination of the mating of the leading edge of the baffle plate and the wedge and the downward and forward force exerted by the baffle arms create an airtight seal between the baffle plate and the frame when the baffle plate is in the closed position.

  • Patent number: 4785844
Abstract: Disclosed is a gate valve for controlling flow, providing a dual seal, including a valve body having a discharge orifice. A gate assembly, located upstream of the discharge orifice, is movable between open and closed positions remote from and blocking the discharge orifice, respectively. The gate assembly includes upper and lower spaced flexible sealing disks which are attached to a relatively rigid upstream backup plate. Radially inner and outer valve seats are secured to the valve body adjacent the discharge orifice. When blocking flow through the valve body, each gate is wedged in sealing engagement with a respective valve seat and a chamber is formed between the two seals to receive seepage past the upstream seal. The chamber may be either evacuated or pressurized to prevent flow of controlled material past the lower or downstream seal.

  • Patent number: 4628955
Abstract: A valve which can be applied to a water pipe while the pipe remains in service. The body of the valve is formed in two sections which can be applied to the outside surface of the water pipe and secured together in precise alignment with one another by tapered pins. A reciprocating gate which forms the valve element is bifurcated and includes a pair of gate sections carrying knife edges which cut through the pipe wall when the gate is initially moved to its closed position. This cuts away a ring from the water pipe and permits the gate to function to control water flow through the valve. The scrap ring which is cut away from the pipe is forced by the gate into a cavity disposed out of the flow line. The gate crushes the ring against a complemental convex surface of the cavity. Camming interaction between the leading ends of the gate sections and the convex surface mechanically forces the gate sections away from one another to press them firmly against the valve seats when the gate is fully closed.

Abstract: The present Airfoil Fuel Ejection Device consists of a retractable bulkhead(s) located in the under-side of the airfoil. Abstract: A quick-closing fire gate is provided having specific application to sectionalized production facilities using vibratory conveyors to transport volatile substances. The conveyor passes through a portal defined by a gate housing at each barrier wall. The gate door or blade initially positioned above the housing is knife-edged to sever the conveyor during its downward translation and is forced flush against the gate housing by the interaction of opposed inclined surfaces on the blade and its support structure. The inclined surfaces furthermore function to eliminate gate rebound by dissipating the kinetic energy of the falling blade and redirecting reaction forces away from the line of blade travel. The rapidity of gate operation is accomplished by a photosensitive cell detonating an explosive bolt which releases a pressurized piston connected to the gate blade.

  • Patent number: 4007906
Abstract: Main steam isolation valves are required for both PWR and BWR nuclear steam supply systems. In the event of a main steam line rupture, these valves must prevent gross loss of steam. The pressure drop across the valves is a direct factor in the efficiency of the generating plant. The rate of steam flow through the valves is high. These conditions require large port diameter valves that are reliable, can close rapidly, have low pressure drops, and are suitable for operation at specified design pressure and temperature. The valve of the present invention includes a parallel seat, fully revolving, double disc gate valve and fully satisfies the above requirements. The valve of the present invention embodies a valve operating mechanism which is fully enclosed within the primary pressure containment of the valve. This precludes any part of the operator being damaged by missiles resulting from other system failures.
