Patent number: 5103866Abstract: In a housing, there is formed, in series, a first end cavity, a first cylinder cavity, a pressure cavity, a second cylinder cavity and a second end cavity. The cavities are separated by walls which include orifices. Two identical valve members are located in the housing. The first valve member has a piston and a valve plug in the first end cavity and a valve plug in the pressure cavity. The second valve member has a piston and a valve plug in the second end cavity and a valve plug in the pressure cavity. Pressure in the pressure cavity acts on the confronting ends of the two valve members. A two position control rod, in a first position, connects pressure to the piston in the first end chamber and connects the second end chamber to return. The piston has a larger area than the second end of the valve member, creating a force differential which moves the first valve member endwise inwardly. Pressure acting on the second end of the second valve member moves it endwise outwardly.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1991Date of Patent: April 14, 1992Inventor: Raymond K. Foster

Patent number: 4757973Abstract: A control valve for a fuel injector, especially of an air-compressing, spontaneous-ignition, internal combustion engine. The control valve includes a valve body in the form of a piston valve which is axially movable in a housing chamber into a closure position and an open position, with the closure position being determined by a valve seat on the housing, and a seating surface edge on the piston valve. The housing chamber includes at least one high pressure connection, and a low pressure connection. The basic problem with a control valve of this general type is that when the piston valve strikes the valve seat, rebound movements are carried out by the piston valve, so that the closure position can only be reliably assumed after a certain time delay, thus negatively influencing the injection process.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1987Date of Patent: July 19, 1988Assignee: Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz AktiengesellschaftInventors: Reda Rizk, Hans-Gottfried Michels

Patent number: 4449547Abstract: A gate valve presents on a flat valve seat surface defining a fluid flow path the mating flat surface of a freely rotatable circular disc carried at its center along a longitudinally moving straight line axis. The valve seat defines a fluid flow aperture asymmetrically disposed to the disc center movement line to thereby create a turning moment from pressure and flow of fluid through the valve seat. This serves without ratching mechanisms to rotate the disc periphery randomly thereby presenting different disc edge portions in a wear position from the fluid flow. Accordingly, wear is evenly distributed about the peripheral edge to significantly increase life and reduce sealing problems from chemical or sediment materials coming between the disc and valve seat surfaces. By mounting the disc and valve seat surfaces at an acute angle to the axis of movement, the disc is freely rotatable and subject to the turning moment up until the time they are frictionally wedged together in a sealed valve closure position.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1983Date of Patent: May 22, 1984Inventor: Rafael Krakovsky

Patent number: 4354663Abstract: A gate valve is provided having a recess formed in the upstream portion of the gate and in intersecting relation with the gate port. The gate recess cooperates with a registering recess formed in the downstream portion of the upstream seat to develop a large flow passage as compared to a small flow passage defined by the interrelationship of the gate port with the downstream seat. Fluid laden with erosive material will flow through the larger dimension gate/seat opening between the gate and upstream seat at low velocity, as compared to high velocity flow through the opening defined between the gate and the downstream seat. This low velocity flow, impinging upon the downstream seat, results in minimized erosion of the downstream seat during opening and closing movement of the valve.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1980Date of Patent: October 19, 1982Assignee: U.S. Industries, Inc.Inventors: Ralph W. Patent number: 4332267Abstract: An improved mounting and sealing assembly is provided for a rotating ball valve required to open under increased differential pressures and close against high flow rates. The valve assembly includes a trunnion-mounted ball and two pressure biased sealing assemblies. The primary seal constitutes an elastomeric seal element which is axially shiftable into engagement with the ball, and the secondary seal comprises a metallic element which is also axially shiftable relative to the ball. To open the valve, the seals are moved in sequence axially away from the ball and the hydraulic seal is fully broken before the ball is rotated. In closing, the ball is rotated to its closed position and the seals then moved axially in sequence into contact with the ball.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1980Date of Patent: June 1, 1982Assignee: Baker International CorporationInventor: Robert W. Patent number: 4330011Abstract: A mixing valve includes a sleeve with axially spaced inlet and outlet ports and a valve member movable within the sleeve to control flow from the inlet to the outlet. There is a seal at the inlet port, which seal extends through the sleeve and into contact with the valve member. The valve member has a first portion adjacent the inlet port to control flow of the fluid therethrough and a second portion adjacent the outlet port to similarly control flow of fluid therethrough. The first and second valve member portions are spaced apart a distance such that movement of the valve member toward a closing position causes the second portion to close the oulet port before the first portion closes the inlet port thereby reducing pressure on said seal means at closure of said inlet port.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1980Date of Patent: May 18, 1982Assignee: Stanadyne, Inc.Inventor: Alfred M. Patent number: 4315616Abstract: This disclosure is directed to a dump valve. In the preferred and illustrated embodiment, the dump valve incorporates a valve operator and comprises a valve body having a side located port for admission of high pressure fluid and an axial outlet. The valve operator powers an elongate push rod which passes through an axial passage in the body and supports a hard metal valve element at the tip which is profiled to fit against a valve seat, blocking flow in the axially located passage. Additionally, it incorporates a second seat which is formed of a shaped inner valve of resilient material. This comprises a second valve element. The two valve elements collectively seal the passage. This is particularly helpful in that a hard trimmed, primary shutoff mechanism is first provided incorporating the hard trimmed valve element and seat, and a second soft trimmed valve element and seat cooperates with it. The hard trim valve must seat first before the rubber plug is expanded.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1980Date of Patent: February 16, 1982Inventor: Robert H. Welker

Patent number: 4304393Abstract: The gate valve has a housing hermetically joined with pipelines and a closing member which is translationally traversable in between the sealing elements of the housing. A bottom end of the closing member having a bevelled edge made so that at the instance when the pipelines get intercommunicated, the passageway is established in between the abovesaid bevelled edge, the housing and the sealing elements, said passageway growing narrow towards the direction of the flow of liquid. The above feature makes it possible to rule out the onset of conditions fraught with cavitation under the closing member and bring the cavitation outside the closing member, thereby adding to the service life of the gate valve.Type: GrantFiled: February 29, 1980Date of Patent: December 8, 1981Inventors: Vladimir N. Patent number: 4280678Abstract: An improved bleed valve for the compressor of a gas turbine engine comprises a port communicating with the intermediate section of the compressor. An annular valve seat surrounds the port, the valve seat having a radial surface terminating in an outer peripheral circular rim. A piston is provided having a flat radial surface and adapted to close on the valve seat, the piston having a peripheral inner cylindrical surface having a diameter corresponding to the outer circular rim of the valve seat. The axial component of the piston inner peripheral surface is chosen such as to be sufficient to close the so-formed nozzle just prior to the piston radial surface closing on the valve seat to prevent chattering of the piston caused by diffuser effect.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1978Date of Patent: July 28, 1981Assignee: Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of Canada, LimitedInventor: Ivor J. Patent number: 4270356Abstract: A turbocharged engine system has an internal-combustion engine whose exhaust gases drive a turbine at a speed generally proportional to the exhaust-gas pressure. This turbine in turn drives a supercharger that feeds air to the engine intake at a pressure that is generally proportional to the turbine speed. A bypass valve connected across the turbine is opened above a predetermined engine speed to shunt the exhaust gases around the turbine and thereby prevent excessive supercharging of the engine. The pressure of the engine exhaust gases is, however, decreased steadily and proportionately with increasing engine speed above a predetermined second engine speed to operate the engine with an intake-manifold pressure that is slightly below that at which knocking would occur for increased horsepower output.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1978Date of Patent: June 2, 1981Assignee: Audi NSU Auto Union AGInventors: Heinz-Dieter Will, Werner Dommes, Hans-Werner Polzl
