Abstract: The present invention generally relates to occluders and, in particular, to occluders for use in medical infusion systems. In one aspect, the occluder contains one or more tubes through which fluid can flow, and the occluder can be automatically controlled to allow or at least partially prevent fluid flow. In some cases, the occluder may be constructed and arranged to fail (e.g., due to loss of power) in a “closed” position, i.e., a position that at least partially prevents fluid flow. In addition, in one embodiment, the occluder may be manually overridden, even when in a failed state, by a user. For instance, in the event of a power failure, a user may be able to manually override the occluder to remove tubing from the occluder. Such occluders may find use, for example, in medical devices such as hemodialysis machines, medical infusion pumps, plasmapheresis devices, and the like.

Abstract: A toothpaste tube squeezer has first and second squeezing blocks for holding a toothpaste tube therebetween. A first clamping mechanism is positioned toward an opening end of the toothpaste tube to apply pressure to the first and second squeezing blocks to squeeze the toothpaste tube. A second clamping mechanism is positioned toward a sealed end of the toothpaste tube to release pressure on the blocks. Both squeezing blocks may have slightly outwardly curved surfaces to contact the toothpaste tube. As the second clamping mechanism is loosened to release pressure applied at the sealed end of the toothpaste tube, a gap may increase between the squeezing blocks at the sealed end of the toothpaste tube. Due to the slightly curved surfaces of the squeezing blocks and the increasing gap, a squeezing pressure moves further up the toothpaste tube in a direction from the sealed end to the opening end.

Abstract: An improved outlet tube device for a urinary drainage bag is disclosed wherein an outlet valve mechanism is contained with a rigid housing fixed securely to the drainage bag, rather than just being clamped to the outlet tubing, and thus cannot become separated from the bag. The outlet valve can be opened only by positive action on the part of the medical care personnel, thereby assuring that urine will be discharged only in a controlled manner. Further, because the valve mechanism does not require that a substantial length of tubing with a freely movable end be used in conjunction with the outlet port, there is no need to engage the free end of the tubing with a keeper. Thus the possibility of the tubing springing back to its straight configuration and flicking residual urine on the attending medical personnel is eliminated. • Patent number: 6145531
Abstract: A temperature sensitive valve includes a body having an interior area, a top end having an inlet and a lower end having an outlet. The top end is design and configured to be removably secured to an exterior faucet located for allowing water to flow when the temperatures are approaching extreme cold conditions, such as freezing, so as to prevent the pipes from freezing, and eventually bursting. Located within the body, between the inlet and outlet, is a resilient tube situated in a bent position. Affixed to the resilient tube an elongated rod fabricated from a temperature sensitive material. As temperatures approach freezing conditions, the rod will decrease in size and thus move away from the resilient tube, enabling it to move upward and thus, become slightly unbent. This will provide for an opening to exist within the bent region of the tube and enable fluid flow.

  • Patent number: 6026838
Abstract: An apparatus detects an opening in a fluid flow passageway such as occurs when a resistance welding cap which is cooled by the fluid flow becomes accidently detached from a welding machine. Upon detection of an opening, an air-actuated pinch lever is activated to quickly pinch shut flexible fluid inlet and outlet hoses and thereby shut off the fluid flow. Inlet and outlet flow rate sensors provide periodic outputs to a digital computer which determines directions of inlet and outlet flow acceleration. If either the inlet or outlet acceleration changes direction, a baseline inlet or outlet flow rate is set equal to the corresponding current flow rate value to prevent erroneous opening detection due to normal flow fluctuations. If the inlet and outlet accelerations are in the same direction, the baseline values are similarly updated. If the inlet acceleration is positive and the outlet acceleration is negative, it indicates a probable opening.

  • Patent number: 5975629
Abstract: A vehicle seat having a bladder with more than two inflatable chambers and an integral control flap, all of one piece, integral construction. To maximize inflatable volume of each chamber, each chamber preferably has a sidewall portion that is generally perpendicular. The control flap has passages in communication with the chambers and valving for selectively controlling inflation of the chambers. Valving preferably includes pinch valves having a generally T-shaped body with legs that pinch passages in the control flap to retain gas in a chamber and selectively inflate or deflate the chamber. The bladder is connected to a gas supply having a pump in communication with a reservoir for storing a charge of pressurized gas in the reservoir so that the pump need not immediately operate when gas is needed to inflate a chamber.

  • Patent number: 5707038
Abstract: A two-way flexible valve to control or interrupt the flow of a pressurized medium. The valve is a polymeric semi-rigid tubing hyperflexed until its material has yielded in an irreversible manner and created a kink. Ulterior flexions of the tubing tend to occur about the preferred axis set by the kink. An acute angle closes the valve by crimping the lumen shut, whereas an obtuse angle opens it in some proportion of the angle. One end of the kinked valve tubing is held on a support and the other end is fastened to a lever hinged on pivot pins. The distance between holding points and the valve kink is several times the diameter of the valve tubing, and the axis of the kink is collinear with that of the hinge, both factors reducing sideload stress in the valve material, increasing its lifespan. An elastic member holds the valve closed and a flexible actuating line acting against the elastic member opens the valve in some proportion of its pull.

  • Patent number: 5692729
Abstract: A pressure equalized flow control apparatus and method controls the flow of fluid through a resilient tube. The resilient tube is surrounded by an enclosed chamber having inlet and outlet ports in fluid communication with the interior of the resilient tube. A vent connecting the interior of the resilient tube with the interior of the enclosed chamber equalizes the fluid pressure inside the resilient tube with the fluid pressure outside the resilient tube within the enclosed chamber. By equalizing the pressures inside and outside of the resilient tube, the vent prevents the resilient tube from collapsing when the resilient tube is under suction. Similarly, the pressure equalization prevents a positive fluid pressure from exerting an outward force on the wall of the tube which must be overcome to pinch the tube. Thus, by using pressure equalization, the vent enables the resilient tube to have a relatively thin wall that is easily pinched to close the resilient tube.
