  • Patent number: 5085406
Abstract: A jack (11) is provided with a thumb wheel (10) preferably made of a plastic material. The jack (11) includes a side gear having an end (20) extending out of a side gear housing (18). The housing (18) has an outer peripheral lip (19) which is engaged by the thumb wheel (10). The thumb wheel (10) includes a plate (24) having an aperture (26) therein of a configuration complementary to that of the side gear end (20) so that when the thumb wheel (10) is positioned on the jack (11), the side gear end (20) will be within the aperture (26) and will rotate upon rotation of the plate (24). The thumb wheel (10) also includes a collar (30) having a plurality of slots (33) therein and a circumferential barb (31) near the end thereof. Upon installing the thumb wheel (10), the collar (30) flexes and the barb (31) snaps over and engages the lip (19) on the housing (18). The engagement is only in the axial direction such that the thumb wheel (10) will freely rotate with respect to the housing (18).

  • Patent number: 4712770
Abstract: A tensioning device has a worm gear mounted in a hollow section enabling the longitudinal displacement of a lift member with respect to a hollow section. The hollow section base and the lift member in each case carry a joint bolt, which cooperates with joint heads fixed to the adjustment means. The worm gear permits a very sensitive and exact setting of the spacing between the two joint bolts, which remains unchanged over a long period. In addition, the tensioning device is particularly suitable for orthopedic purposes, due to its small constructional volume.

  • Patent number: 4619439
Abstract: For the handling of portable large containers, lifting and depositing devices are used, which have rack and pinion jacks to be attached to the corners of the containers by brackets. There rack and pinion jacks have tubular winch shanks which are approximately the height of the containers, into which are guided tubular uprights with the racks. Because of tolerance variations, the danger here arises of an impaired guidance of the uprights with the result of a poor operation of the gearing. To avoid this difficulty, a guide tube is connected with the bottom end of each tubular winch shank. Guide surfaces in the guide tube can be produced with great precision and at low cost. The housing of the winch gearing is configured integral with the guide tube. Thus, a small amount of side play can be left between the upright and winch shank without adversely affecting the rack and pinion gearing operation.

  • Patent number: 4137784
Abstract: Disclosed herein is an electromechanical actuator which acts as an analog of a fluid operated cylinder. A tubular piston moves along the axis of a fixed outer cylinder. One end of the piston is fitted with a threaded stud to which a clevis or other load attachment device can be attached. The other end of the piston, inside the outer cylinder, is attached to a coaxial drive nut. The drive nut is threaded onto a coaxial lead screw which passes through the drive nut and clears the inside of the piston. The drive nut is notched at a plurality of locations, the notches corresponding to a plurality of axially extending protrusions on the inside of the outer cylinder. Thus, when the lead screw is rotated, translational motion is imparted to the drive nut due to its inability to rotate relative to the outer cylinder. A small bar magnet is affixed to the drive nut and cooperates with an external reed switch to provide intermediate shutoff points.
