Abstract: A groove is provided in either one or the other of a cylinder housing or the piston and a pressure sealing ring is mounted in this groove. A resilient ring is in surface engagement with the sealing ring and a semi-resilient ring, also in the groove, is disposed in engagement with the outer edge of the resilient ring whereby upon the application of surface pressure by the sealing ring against the resilient ring as a result of fluid pressure in the cylinder, the resilient ring is compressed. This expands it to a larger diameter which in turn expands the semi-resilient ring to a larger diameter for efficient sealing. A lip on the member with the groove therein projects outwardly for backing up the semi-resilient ring.

  • Patent number: 4102788
Abstract: There is disclosed an apparatus suitable for shifting the plates of a plate filter press. The apparatus comprises supporting means for supporting the apparatus so that it can be moved longitudinally of the plate filter press, and a manually-operable, power-drivable device including first and second members capable of engaging plates of the plate filter press and movable relative to one another by a source of power along a line of action which, when the apparatus is in use is parallel to, or substantially parallel to, the plate filter press. The arrangement is such that, in use, the device can be rotated or swung in order to bring the first and second members into and out of engagement with plates of the plate filter press and, when in engagement with plates of the plate filter press, the device can be operated to cause movement of the first and second members relative to one another and hence movement of one or more plates of the plate filter press.

  • Patent number: 4099707
Abstract: Apparatus for moving railroad cars, barges or the like along tracks includes three double-acting hydraulic cylinder mechanisms operatively supported from trackside overhead framework structure. A first, push-pull hydraulic mechanism is extensible and retractable within a plane parallel to the railroad tracks and the same is disposed toward one side of the tracks. A second, clamping hydraulic mechanism is supported upon the free end of the push-pull mechanism. As a result of the disposition of the first mechanism toward one side of the tracks, the clamping mechanism is able to positively clamp the upper side wall portion and said rail portion of the railroad car. Movement of the car in either a forward or backward mode is attained under the influence of the first mechanism. Alternatively, the push-pull mechanism can retard movement of the car and safely retains the car in a predetermined position when the mechanism is not actuated.

Abstract: Lift apparatus by which wheelchair invalids are lifted from one location, through a spiral, to another location. The lift apparatus includes coacting movable and fixed support members which are telescopingly received within one another to form a variable chamber therebetween.A cantilever arm is affixed to and radially extends from the movable support member. A pair of spaced arms are affixed to the cantilever arm and removably engage a chair. The cantilever arm is adjustably affixed to the movable support member such that the arm can be adjustably positioned along any radial extending from the axial centerline of the support members.A cam means is jointly associated with the two support members in such a manner that when fluid pressure telescopes the two support members apart, the cantilever arm is rotated 45.degree. towards the end of the upstroke and thereafter, the cantilever arm is rotated another 45.degree. as the chair is lowered back into proximity of the original elevation.

Abstract: A double-acting jack having a working chamber is fitted with an adjustable stop against which its piston comes to rest. The stop is constituted by a nonrotatable nut, which is axially displaceable by an axially nondisplaceable lead screw with which it meshes. The stop includes means for controlling the supply of pressurized fluid from a supply line to the working chamber, the supply line being opened whenever the piston and its associated rod are not in the end-of-stroke position and closed whenever the piston and its rod are in the end-of-stroke position. The lead screw is mounted to have a slight amount of axial play. The supply line terminates in an annular opening provided on a shoulder of the lead screw, which defines a valve, or in it seat.

Abstract: An electrohydraulic drawing or hoisting apparatus for the pulling or lifting and lowering of loads, in which a load lifting member, hydraulic fluid tank, electric motor, pump, and control unit are all mounted within a single compact unit which is rigidly connected to one end of a cylinder piston unit. A control handle is connected to the hydraulic control unit so that the directions of displacement of the handle and the resulting motion of the load lifting member coincide substantially. The speed of the piston in both directions is continuously variable as a function of the displacement of the control handle. The piston's speed in at least one direction of motion, moreover, is controlled by influencing the pump delivery through displacement of the control handle.

  • Patent number: 4053062
Abstract: The invention operates on a bundle of cooling tubes which in use are disposed within a heat exchanger shell which is typically a longitudinally elongated cylinder disposed with its long axis horizontal and supported well above a floor, on a steel framework. The array of tubes become corroded and clogged after a period of use, either internally, externally, or both, and must be pulled linearly out of the shell for replacement. Typically the initial pulling is a difficult job because the tubes have become tightly corroded to the shell.Herein is disclosed an improvement to the type of tube bundle extractor in which the operative unit is a car movable along a pair of rails supported in alignment with the heat exchanger, the rails being supported on a framework which is usually suspended from a crane hook, the framework being secured to one end of the heat exchanger during a bundle pulling or bundle inserting step.
