    Abstract: A mixing device for mixing at least two liquids to produce a homogenous mixture. The device includes an elongated chamber in which a vertically oriented elongated mixing cavity is located. The cavity is sealed at its lower end and it is open at its upper end and in communication with the interior of the chamber. An elongated conduit extends the length of the cavity and is adapted to receive liquids to be mixed. The conduit includes a plurality of ports located at longitudinally spaced positions therealong and which ports are directed in different directions. The ports create plural streams of liquid which interact and mix with one another within the cavity. The mixed liquids overflow the cavity and out its top end into the chamber 24. The chamber 24 includes an outlet from which the mixed liquids are withdrawn. In accordance with the preferred embodiment gas eductor means are provided in the inlet to the conduit to introduce gas bubbles within the cavity.

    Abstract: An aspirating horizontal mixer for aerating and liquid mixing includes a float with tiltable supports extending downwardly into a body of water and an air delivery conduit which are connected to a mixer unit supported below the liquid surface by the supports and tiltable therewith. The mixer unit includes a submersible motor powering a propeller and a nozzle member situated in the flow path of liquid from the propeller. The nozzle member has an internal venturi for mixing air from the air delivery conduit with the liquid flowing therethrough and includes a converging wall formation forming a constriction and a diverging wall formation leading downstream and merging with the interior wall of the nozzle member. An air injection port extends through the diverging wall formation adjacent the constriction and is in communication with the air delivery conduit for mixing air with the liquid as it flows through the venturi.

    Abstract: To convert a conventional nonpulsating air/water mixer for a therapy tub, swimming pool, spa or the like to a pulsating mixer, an inexpensive pulsator fitting is used to replace the central eyeball portion of the mixer's outlet and mounting fitting. The pulsator fitting has at least one cross bar positioned to block the mixer's aerated water jet, and a small cylindrical rotor journaled on the cross bar. The rotor extends from the cross bar coaxially into the mixer body's outlet passage in the path of the aerated jet. The jet strikes a central portion of the upstream rotor end, travels through an angulated rotor passage, and exits the downstream rotor end at an angle relative to the rotor axis and at a point spaced apart from it, causing the rotor to spin. As the rotor spins, the exiting aerated jet rotates and is repetitively and intermittently blocked by the cross bar, thereby pulsing the jet.

Where the pressure is the highest, that is, where the wall that establishes the curved trajectory has its largest radius of curvature, the fluid of lower density is introduced, preferably under pressure. The apparatus can be embodied as a tuyere which is a figure of rotation, when only a relatively small proportion of lower density fluid is to be introduced. When the proportion of lower density fluid is greater, however, then the device can be embodied as a duct of quadrangular section wrapped in a helix with narrow slots for the introduction of the fluid of lower density formed in its outer wall.

The horizontal passage is open to the atmosphere. The pipe tee supports a mixing plug made of silver solder which is in sealing relation to the water inlet pipe and terminates in line with the horizontal pipe tee passage. The plug has at least one relatively narrow, straight line opening through it for the discharge of water from the pressure tank into the pipe tee.

In this case, the froth, like the cleaned suspension, is drawn off on one long side, i.e., a side which extends parallel to the cylinder axis; the extraction opening for the cleaned suspension being provided preferably immediately below the level of the suspension and/or the froth extraction arrangement.

    Abstract: A barriered circulator/aerator in the endless channel of a barrier oxidation ditch provides a directly pumped flow of mixed liquor into a central liquor inlet zone and an energy-release induced flow of mixed liquor into a surrounding liquor inlet zone at the inlet of a deep oxygen contact duct which passes beneath the barrier to the discharge channel on the downstream side thereof. It further provides mixing of diffused air with the directly pumped flow and/or the induced flow and then moving the combined air-liquor flows into the deepest portion of the contact duct where point-source pressurized aeration of both flows occurs. Eddy jet diffusers are preferably used for aerating the induced flow. Oxygen transfer efficiencies are obtained that are 1.6-2.2 times as great per brake horsepower per hour as that attainable by 100% pumping of the mixed liquor in a total barrier oxidation ditch, as disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 4,260,278.

    Abstract: An improved molten metal pump and gas injection apparatus comprising a submersible pump housing 10 enclosing a rotatable impeller 30, an impeller drive 12 supported above the housing and an elongate drive shaft 16 operatively connected to the impeller. Rotation of the drive shaft effects fluid flow between a pump inlet 35 and a pump outlet 44 both being at least partially defined by the impeller housing. A gas injection conduit 54 extends downwardly from a drive motor support platform 20 and includes an output end 54a that terminates near the pump inlet and which is received by a gas inlet collar 58 that defines a venturi 60, coaxial with the axis of the pump inlet. A passage 62 formed in the collar communicates the end of the gas injection conduit with the throat of the venturi so that the gas is injected into the incoming molten metal in an area of low pressure, thereby reducing the gas pressure needed to effect injection.

    Abstract: A water-aeration apparatus has a tubular frame defining a substantially closed chamber and capable of floating and carrying a load when the chamber is filled with air. Flood and bleed valves are provided at respective underwater water intakes and above-water air exhausts for introducing water into the chamber and for withdrawing air therefrom. A double-walled conduit is supported on the frame and has an outer substantially gas-impervious wall and, spaced inwardly therefrom, an inner gas-pervious wall. The conduit is inclined to the horizontal when the frame is floating and has an upper conduit end and a lower conduit end. A pump carried on the frame has an air intake above the water when the frame is floating and an air output at the lower end and directed toward the upper end.

    Abstract: A gas-liquid mixing process and apparatus, particularly applied to aeration, especially associated with activated sludge waste-water treatment, wherein complete, efficient mixing of the gas and liquid is achieved initially in a pre-mixing draft tube and secondly in an outer mixing vessel by imparting a turbulent, random generally outward and upward radial motion to the liquid and gas contents of the vessel. A portion of the contents of the vessel is withdrawn and recirculated through the pre-mixing draft tube substantially axially vertically situated within the outer mixing vessel. A lower end of the draft tube has a nozzle opening which produces a net flow which is an axially symmetrical radial jet of recirculating contents, thereby establishing the desired turbulent random motion. In the case of aeration in waste-water treatment, air or other oxygen-containing gas is introduced into the draft tube.

    Abstract: An in-line contactor adapted to bring about intimate contact between a disinfectant and a wastewater stream to produce a reaction between the disinfectant and pathogens effecting kills in a manner minimizing unwanted side effects. The wastewater stream is pumped through the successive stages of the contactor, the first of which is an input section having a converging nozzle that projects the stream at high velocity into a throat. The throat feeds the stream in a highly turbulent state through a mixing section, the resultant vacuum created within the throat acting to draw a disinfectant such as aqueous or gaseous chlorine from a disinfectant supply into the mixing section where it is thoroughly intermingled with the turbulent stream before the stream is discharged from the contactor through a diverging pressure-recovery output section.

Accordingly, separate streams of a pressured gas and a pressurized liquid are introduced into the respective gas and liquid conduits whereby the gas and liquid are accelerated to a high velocity while minimizing velocity head loss and admixed at converging angles to achieve immediate high forward velocity and thus gas-liquid dispersion with the resulting gas-liquid mixture being subsequently accelerated with minimum pressure losses to achieve further gas-liquid dispersion and thus, microbubble production from controlled volumes of gas and liquid.

The feed velocity of the liquid is adjusted accordingly to provide a mass liquid concentration value in the emulsion that is between the mass liquid concentration value transition inversion point and multiple critical point values.

    Abstract: A venturi type mixer that produces an aerated water jet for spas, therapy pools, swimming pools and the like, is provided with a pulsating action by means of a flow impeding spoiler that momentarily and repetitively disturbs the water jet that is projected into the mixing chamber. Disturbance of the jet effectively disables the vacuum produced by the venturi action to thereby cause discharge of a water stream of decreased velocity having considerably less entrained air. The spoiler is moved into and out of the water jet by means of an automatically reciprocating piston that is operated by a combination of a spring and the vacuum produced by the venturi action. Alternatively the spoiler may be rotated into and out of the path of the jet by a water driven rotor, or the jet orifice may be rotated relative to a fixed spoiler.

    Abstract: A device for aerating lakes, the main part of which is an elongate casing having a longitudinal water passage through it. Surrounding and including the axial space between the frusto-conical and cylindrical segments is a mixing chamber having a pair of air intake openings to which air hoses are attached. The device is positioned underwater for use with the air hoses from the mixing chamber in communication with the atmosphere. A submersible pump forces water into the casing which emerges as a jet stream from the restricted opening in its frusto-conical segment.
