  • Patent number: 6171535
Abstract: The process for fabricating an orthotic joint of the present invention involves creating a casting mold of the anatomical joint for which the brace is being fitted. Then layers of nylon and cross-link carbon composite grade and the PVA bag are placed over the mold as is done in typical laminating processees for such braces. Then, a series of reinforcing strips of nylon and composite are attached to the layup in the same location where the sidebars would normally be located. The bottom layer which is typically a layer of nylon stockinette is the longest of the layers and the nylon strips are alternated with the composite strips with each successive strip being shorter than the strip immediately below it. A dummy disk is then provided at the joint. A second set of strips is then positioned where the upper sidebar would be located. Additional laminating substrate materials of nylon and cross-link carbon composite braid and a PVA bag are then placed over the structure.

  • Patent number: 6139308
Abstract: Multilayer meltblown fibrous webs, as well as apparatus and methods of forming the webs. The webs are produced on a rotating collector that also moves parallel to its longitudinal axis. The webs are thus formed in a helical process, and the resulting tubular web is separated in a direction parallel to a helix angle. By separating the tubular web in a direction parallel to the helix angle, a flat multilayer meltblown fibrous web is provided that allows for incorporation of feathered edges formed during the article's manufacture.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of and an apparatus for manufacturing biaxially oriented film. A tubular original film which has been extruded by an extruding die is biaxially oriented by heat and air injected to the inside portion thereof being conveyed to nip rolls each having an individual circumferential speed. The temperature of heat to be applied to the film is controlled on the basis of the detected film thickness for the purpose of obtaining a uniform film thickness distribution. Furthermore, the film can be made uniform by adjusting the outer diameter of the bubble-shaped oriented film by adjusting the distance between two sets of nip rolls on the basis of the measured width of the film. In addition, when the thus-oriented film is subjected to a heat treatment, temperature of heat is arranged to be a predetermined temperature as to prevent adhesion of the films.

Abstract: A method of making power transmission belt including an endless belt body made of an elastomer matrix. Embedded in the endless body are tensile cords used to strengthen the belt. Along the inner circumference of the belt are formed a plurality of teeth having teeth bottoms there between. Embedded in the endless belt body between the tensile cords and the surfaces of the teeth and teeth bottoms is a layer composed of nonwoven fabric having the elastomer matrix permeated therethrough. The nonwoven fabric layer is evenly diffused in the teeth, but is compressed at the tooth bottoms to form, along with the elastomer matrix permeated therethrough, a thinly compressed layer protecting the tensile cords. The nonwoven fabric is placed around the outer cylindrical surface of a cylindrical internal die in a substantially uncompressed state. The tensile cords are wound spirally over the nonwoven fabric to compress the fabric to a predetermined thickness.
