In the method of manufacturing the footwear, the upper and an outsole are disposed a set distance apart. Polyurethane or other material for providing cushioning to the footwear is either injected between the upper and outsole or poured onto the outsole and the upper is traversed over the outsole so as to define the mold for defining the midsole. The polyurethane is directly attached to the upper and adhered to the outsole/cupsole.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 11, 2010Publication date: October 13, 2011Inventors: Vincent Fleming, Aron Cabasan, Lenny M. Patent number: 8029721Abstract: Mold assemblies for compression molding of footwear components include molds, heating elements, conductor plates, insulating layers and carrier trays. An upper mold assembly is placed into a fixture attached to an upper press platen. A lower mold assembly slides into and out of a fixture attached to a lower press platen. Heating elements within the mold assemblies connect to electrical contacts in the fixtures when the mold assemblies are installed in the fixtures, thereby providing electrical power to the heating elements and heating the molds. A conveyor is positioned to receive a mold assembly from (or transfer a mold assembly to) the lower press platen fixture when the lower platen is in a lowered position.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2009Date of Patent: October 4, 2011Assignee: NIKE, Inc.Inventor: Todd A. Publication number: 20110221180Abstract: A skate shoe apparatus may be used with a skate (e.g., an ice skate, a traditional roller skate or an inline skate) to provide a walking surface for a skater resembling that of a shoe or boot. The skate shoe apparatus includes a channel to receive a lower travel surface of a skate and support members to provide support (e.g., lateral support) for the skate and distribute lateral forces produced by the skate across the skate shoe apparatus. Additionally, the skate shoe apparatus prevents damage to the travel surface of a skate and increased safety when a skater wearing the skate walks on non-skating surfaces (e.g., walking in ice skates from a dressing area to the ice or across a parking lot to an arena or walking in traditional roller skates or inline skates in a store or restaurant).Type: ApplicationFiled: May 18, 2011Publication date: September 15, 2011Inventors: Douglas L. Publication number: 20110154688Abstract: An article of footwear includes an upper and a sole assembly secured to the upper. The sole assembly includes a first portion having a lower ground engaging surface, an upper surface, and a recess formed in the upper surface. The upper surface of the first portion is in contact with the upper. A second portion is seated in the recess in the first portion and has an upper surface, with the upper surface of the second portion being in contact with the upper. The second portion comprises a foam material having a density less than 0.25 g/cm3.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 11, 2011Publication date: June 30, 2011Applicant: Nike, Inc.Inventors: Sui-Chieh Yu, Denis Schiller, Daniel DeSpain, David Patrick Jones, Eric P. Publication number: 20110146110Abstract: A support structure for footwear includes a longitudinally extending member to which a plurality of laterally extending supports members are secured at spaced apart locations along a length of the longitudinal member. The support structure may extend along the entire length of a footwear or may be specifically designed for the forefoot, midfoot, or hindfoot areas of a footwear. The support structure may be combined with plate-like structures or may include a plurality of longitudinally extending members. The lateral supports may extend in a generally horizontal plane or may extend in an upward or downward direction out of the horizontal plane. Furthermore, the longitudinal and lateral members may be made of different materials, or each may be made of a plurality of different materials to provide the desired characteristics of the support structure at a given location in the footwear. Different portions of the longitudinal member may be more or less flexible than the lateral supports.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 20, 2010Publication date: June 23, 2011Applicant: RED WING SHOE COMPANY, INC.Inventor: Kenton D. Patent number: 7922948Abstract: In a method of moulding a sole of a plastic material and a welt on a shoe upper (1) a mould (3) is used. The mould (3) includes at last (2), upon which a shoe upper (1) is arranged, an upper mould part (5) divided along a longitudinal middle plane and thus includes two halves (5a, 5b) being laterally movable in relation to the lower mould part (4) between an open and a closed mould position, and a lower mould part (4) being vertically movable in relation to the upper mould part (5) between an open and a closed mould position. For carrying out the method an annular shoe welt (6) is provided and arranged in the mould in the mould's open position. The two halves (5a, 5b) of the upper mould part (5) are closed and the lower mould part is moved into its closed position.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 2003Date of Patent: April 12, 2011Assignee: ECCO Sko A/SInventors: Jens Erik Sommerlund, Hans Christian Hansen

Patent number: 7875229Abstract: A method of making a lasted skate boot having an upper for enclosing and supporting a human foot having an ankle, a plantar surface, a lateral side, a medial side, and toes. The method comprises (a) forming lateral and medial quarter panels by thermoforming a sheet of foam material such that at least one of the quarter panels comprises an inner surface shaped to substantially conform to one of the lateral and medial sides of the foot; (b) assembling to the quarter panels a toe box for enclosing the toes of the foot, an inner lining having an inner surface adapted to contact the foot in use, and a tongue extending upwardly and rearwardly from the toe box to form the upper; and (c) affixing to the upper an insole for facing the plantar surface of the foot.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2004Date of Patent: January 25, 2011Assignee: Bauer Hockey, Inc.Inventors: Steve Wright, Carl Madore

Patent number: 7767127Abstract: A method for manufacturing two-color components, for shoes in general, including the steps of positioning a sheet element, made of rubber, in a mold that forms a plurality of cavities delimited by edges the free end whereof lies on the parting plane of the mold. A sheet of plastic material which has a release function is then superimposed on the sheet element, and a layer is positioned on the sheet in order to give mechanical strength thereto. The mold is then closed with a cover, applying pressure together with heating in order to fill the cavities with the rubber and simultaneously move the rubber away from the edges. After removing the layer and the sheet together with any flash of rubber present on the edges, a second sheet element is superimposed, and pressure and heating are applied in order to produce bonding with the perforated sheet element; after this, the resulting article, which has a two-color appearance, is subjected to vulcanization.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2005Date of Patent: August 3, 2010Assignee: Vibram S.p.A.Inventor: Marco Bramani
