Abstract: A process for manufacturing an air flow throttle valve assembly in which the valve disc or blade is precisely sized and centered after assembly to the shaft and throttle body by heating and squeezing of the disc, preferably while the shaft is held at a shallow angle to extrude the perimeter slightly out to the bore wall. After cooling, the shaft angle is reset to a slightly greater angle.

  • Patent number: 5902428
Abstract: A molded motor vehicle instrument panel made of a thermoplastic material has an integral air bag deployment door for a passenger side air bag that is defined by a tear seam and is normally retained by an integral flexible mounting/hinge flange to a part of the vehicle structure when the seam is torn by the inflating air bag and wherein this flange then bends to allow the door to swing open to allow deployment of the air bag through an opening in the instrument panel while retaining same to the vehicle structure as the door is then free of the instrument panel. At very low temperatures, a portion of the air bag door can break away from the mounting/hinge flange because of plastic embrittlement at these low temperatures and the high bending stresses encountered at this juncture.

Abstract: A sonic welded gas mask and the process for fabricating the mask. The facepiece of the mask provides apertures, appropriately shaped and dimensioned to receive gas mask components for sealing therein. The elastomeric material of the facepiece of the mask is captured between sealing elements and secured therebetween by a sonic welding process. The method of fabrication described attaches and positively seals the elements into the mask. Direct voice communication and alternatively, electronic voice communication may be provided between a user and the external environment.

  • Patent number: 5874146
Abstract: The invention provides an improved method of vibration welding of thermoplastic joints. Such welding is conducted by vibrating two fiber reinforced thermoplastic parts under pressure along their common interface to generate frictional heat to melt and fuse their surfaces together. Fibers from at least one surface penetrate both into the weld and into the other surface. As a result, the welded, fiber reinforced thermoplastic surfaces have increased tensile strength than heretofore achievable. Vibration welds of reinforced thermoplastic surfaces according to this invention achieve a maximum tensile strength as high as about 120% of a weld formed by the unreinforced surfaces of corresponding thermoplastic materials.

  • Patent number: 5863364
Abstract: A method of ultrasonic welding of plastic members to form a high strength interconnection between the members in the form of a low profile, illuminated electrical plug. High-frequency (ultrasonic) energy is transmitted by the ultrasonic welding apparatus to compatible plastic parts of the low profile electrical plug. At the intersection of the two parts, a combination of applied force and surface and/or intermolecular friction increases the temperature until the melting point of the thermoplastic is reached. Upon removal of the ultrasonic energy, a bond is produced between the plastic parts, effectively affixing them together in the desired fashion.

  • Patent number: 5861072
Abstract: Two plastic pieces such as a handle and a container are welded together using an ultrasonic horn. Protrusions serving as energy directors are arranged on one piece in a substantially circular array, in a starburst design. A hole or cavity is formed at a central axis of the circular array so that the amount of energy concentrating at inner ends of the energy directors will not create a burned spot or a hole in the container. The ultrasonic energy at the inner ends of the protrusions is concentrated at the smaller inner area defined by the inner ends of the protrusions to first melt inner ends of the protrusions and then the entire protrusions.

  • Patent number: 5843255
Abstract: A connecting pad of a magnetic head element is bonded to a signal conductor of a supporting beam. As a result of the bonding, the magnetic head element is mechanically coupled to the supporting beam and the connecting pad is electrically connected to the signal conductor. Also an auxiliary pad of the magnetic head element is bonded to the signal conductor. This bonding improves the mechanical coupling strength of the magnetic head element to the supporting beam. When the magnetic head element is to be bonded to the supporting beam, one of the pads is bonded to the signal conductor, and thereafter the other pad is bonded to the signal conductor. During the process of the latter bonding, a groove which is previously disposed in the signal conductor blocks heat given for the bonding from being transmitted to the former bonding portion in which bonding has been already completed, thereby preventing the bonding of the former bonding portion from being broken.

  • Patent number: 5833785
Abstract: An injection molded plastic housing for, and method of enclosing, an electrical device including placing the device between a housing including a lid member and a base member and joining the lid member and the base member to each other and to a connector attached to the enclosed device. The lid member, base member and connector each may include a means for mating to promote their joining to form an assembled plastic housing with increased structural integrity. The lid member and base member join with the connector in a substantially overlapping relationship that results in a rigid and aesthetically pleasing housing which complies with standards for PC card style devices set by, for example, CFA, PCMCIA, JEDIC, ISO, etc. The inexpensive injection molded plastic material of the housing and the limited number of parts provides for an easily automated, economical method of enclosing electrical devices for use, for example, in computer peripheral and memory applications.

  • Patent number: RE37025
Abstract: A fitment comprising a pouring spout having a peripheral flange at one end and a closure at a second end is attached to a paperboard carton formed with a hole in a side panel. The carton is moved intermittently along a conveyor, such as that used in a filling machine. An arm having a spud oscillates about a horizontal axis parallel to the conveyor. The arm is pivoted to down position as the carton reaches the fitment attaching station so that the fitment enters the open end of the carton with the spud aligned with the carton hole. The arm is mounted on a first carriage which reciprocates horizontally in a first direction to project the closure through the hole until the flange abuts the inside of the carton panel. An ultrasonic welding horn is mounted on a second carriage which reciprocates in alignment with the first carriage in a second direction opposite the first direction. The horn welds the fitment flange to the inside of the carton panel.
