Abstract: A method of treating reaction injection molded polyurethane, polyurethane/urea and polyurea polymers comprising exposing a reaction injection molded polyurethane, polyurethane/urea or polyurea polymer to an amount of infrared energy sufficient to increase the temperature of the polymer to at least 175° C., and then maintaining the temperature of the polymer at or above that temperature, for a time sufficient to increase the Gardner impact property, as measured using ASTMD-3029, when compared to the same polymer which has been heated to the same temperature and maintained thereat for the same time in a convection oven. The invention produces marked improvements in impact, heat sag and heat distortion temperature properties, and thus is particularly suited to rapid preparation of parts using a mass production conveyor and is particularly well-suited to preparation of parts which are to be subjected to later high temperature processes, such as the “E-coat” process.

Abstract: A system for fluid processing is provided to control shear, point velocity and pressure in either a Newtonian or non-Newtonian fluid which includes creation of three fields, namely a dynamic microshear field, a dynamic velocity field and a dynamic pressure field, with the fields being created by the injection of energy between 1 KHz and 10 MHz into the fluid. Control is achieved by control of the angle at which mechanical energy is delivered, steering and/or focusing of the energy, control of the amplitude of the energy waveform, of the energy, and control of the frequency of the energy in one embodiment to eliminate standing waves. By controlling the three fields, the system is able to control overall fluid behavior. In one embodiment, energy is injected into a fluid at any angle to the direction of flow assuming the fluid is flowing, with the injected energy providing a predetermined controllable zone of energy in the fluid at the region of energy injection.

  • Patent number: 6007759
Abstract: A method for manufacturing an injection molded article on a surface on which a label is arranged and a device for manufacturing the injection molded article on the surface of which the label is arranged are disclosed. In the disclosed method, an injection mold is provided having two mold halves together defining a mold cavity in a closed situation. The mold cavity has a form that corresponds to a form of the injection molded article. A label is placed in the mold cavity in an open situation. The label is electrostatically charged such that it adheres electrostatically to a wall of the mold cavity. The mold cavity is closed, and a heated and thus plasticized plastic is injected into the closed mold cavity. The mold is opened after cooling and the article is removed from the mold cavity. The disclosed device includes a carrier for carrying and electrically charging the label at the moment it contacts the wall of the open mold cavity.

  • Patent number: 5972286
Abstract: The invention relates to the field of ceramic and hard metal industries and concerns a process for manufacturing hard metal parts, in particular th having a complex geometry, such as those used for example as machining tools and wear elements. The object of the invention is to create a process which allows the manufacture of hard metal parts with a complex geometry by using a stable dispersed hard metal-binder suspension, wherein the binder is a thermoplastic binder having a viscosity of 3 to 6 mPa s, and without using an organic solvent to eliminate the binder. For that purpose, a process is disclosed wherein a hard metal powder having an average grain size smaller than 2.0 .mu.m is mixed with a liquefied thermoplastic binder, with viscosity of the mixture being set upon a value of at least 100 mPa s and up to 4,000 mPa s during the whole production and treatment process.

Abstract: A device box having a cover member and a base member releasably coupled together by a snap-fit latching arrangement. Preferably, both the cover member and the base member are integrally molded as one-piece, unitary members with only non-hidden surfaces so that they can be manufactured by straight draw-type injection molding techniques, rather than by molds using sliders. The latching arrangement of the preferred embodiments includes one or more latch members resiliently coupled to the base member for releasably engaging one or more apertures in the cover member.

  • Patent number: 5885513
Abstract: Method and apparatus of making a reinforced composite structure wherein a reusable mold closure is mated to a mold to close off a mold cavity in which a reinforcement is positioned. The mold closure or mold includes a plurality of collapsible resin supply ports through which resin is pumped into the mold cavity from a source of resin to infuse or impregnate the reinforcement with resin. After the resin is introduced into the mold cavity, the resin residing in the resin supply ports is selectively cured to form respective cured resin plugs on which the resin supply ports collapse to seal them in air-tight manner. The resin residing in the mold and infused in the reinforcement is not cured at that time.

  • Patent number: 5827471
Abstract: A blow molded container is provided which includes a neck portion having locking teeth with features which ensure the proper formation of the teeth. Specifically, the container neck portion includes an annular inclined surface extending from both the upper and lower sides of the teeth, while all edges of the teeth are rounded. The annular inclined surfaces and the rounded edges ensure that the teeth are formed with sufficient material to ensure strong, sturdy teeth devoid of weak areas, holes or cracks. A method of forming the container is also provided which includes rounding all edges of the teeth as a parison abuts molds so as to inhibit undesirable stretching of the material forming the teeth. The method may also include forming the annular inclined surfaces to further inhibit undesirable stretching of the material forming the teeth thus ensuring proper formation of the teeth.

  • Patent number: 5732364
Abstract: The present invention provides a composition and process for disposal of radioactive, hazardous and mixed wastes. The present invention preferably includes a process for multibarrier encapsulation of radioactive, hazardous and mixed wastes by combining substantially simultaneously dry waste powder, a non-biodegradable thermoplastic polymer and an anhydrous additive in an extruder to form a homogenous molten matrix. The molten matrix may be directed in a "clean" polyethylene liner, allowed to cool, thus forming a monolithic waste form which provides a multibarrier to the dispersion of wastes into the environment.
