With Means To Tilt Heating Means Patents (Class 266/240)
  • Patent number: 4138209
Abstract: An apparatus for casting a fusible material has a support on which is provided a row of melting burners and a parallel row of warming burners. A crucible holder on the support has a pair of bars forming a plurality of seats each above a respective one of the melting burners and each for a respective crucible. A slide having a plurality of mold holders is displaceable into a position with the mold holders above the warming burners. Once the material in the crucible holders has been melted by the melting burners the entire crucible-holding assembly may be agitated horizontally to homogenize this material. Thereafter the entire crucible-holding assembly is tipped up to pour the contents of the crucibles into the molds which have been preheated by the warming burners. The warming burners are then shut off and jets of compressed ambient-temperature gas are directed at the molds to cool the material therein and solidify same into a tablet or slug suitable for X-ray analysis.

  • Patent number: 4120487
Abstract: Apparatus for collecting and removing smoke and fumes from a melting furnace plant comprising a platform tiltably supported by stationary supporting members, the tilting axis being near one edge of the platform, a furnace fixedly mounted to the platform, said furnace having a furnace chamber open at the top and accessible through a charging orifice in the platform, said furnace having a pouring spout connected to the upper part of a side wall of the furnace and located near the tilting axis. A hood is pivotally supported by supporting members mounted to the platform and being angularly movable towards and away from a portion of the platform surrounding the charging orifice of the platform. The pivot axis of the hood is parallel with the tilting axis of the platform and extends at the same side of the furnace as the tilting axis. A pair of parallel wall members are arranged on the upper surface of said platform and extend at right angles to the tilting axis.

  • Patent number: 4097032
Abstract: A forehearth of a smelting furnace which includes a weir used in conjunction with a float essentially in the form of a U disposed in a horizontal position, with the opening of the U disposed adjacent to the discharge opening of the weir, the float having a thickness sufficient to act to dam or stop passage of molten material from the forehearth through the weir, but allowing such molten material to pass under the float, and through the opening of the U, and thence through the discharge weir.

  • Patent number: 4090054
Abstract: A preheating arrangement for bringing foundry ladles up to temperature is described. The arrangement comprises a slotted elongated graphite rod extending down from a ladle cover, a pair of clamp and contact elements extending through the cover and a transformer above the cover with a shell around the transformer forming a single turn secondary winding connected directly to the clamp and contact elements. A graphite element is coated to protect it from corrosive atmospheres by heating it, while buried in sand, to the fusing temperature of the sand and then allowing it to cool.

  • Patent number: 4032121
Abstract: A process and apparatus for the production of iron from iron ores, in which the ore is being heated and reduced in a rotary kiln by a treatment with solid carbon and with flame gas flowing in a countercurrent, the reduced iron is being collected and overheated in a first hearth furnace and is being fed in batches into a second hearth furnace, and is being converted there to pig iron, cast iron or steel, characterized in that the hot exhaust gases formed in the second hearth furnace are passed into the first hearth furnace and then through the rotary kiln together with the hot exhaust gases produced in the first hearth furnace.

  • Patent number: 4031309
Abstract: An electric furnace has an inlet opening for introduction of starting materials in the upper region thereof. A pre-melting vessel is arranged above the furnace and has a discharge opening above and in communication with the inlet opening of the furnace. The bottom portion of the furnace is formed with a depression in which the starting material forms a body after its introduction through the inlet opening and is heat-treated so as to obtain slag and steel. The furnace is provided at its sides with a pair of mounting members each having a cam surface of part-circular configuration having a center on an axis which extends substantially horizontally and is located at the inlet opening of the furnace. A plurality of rollers engages the cam surfaces, the rollers being mounted on a support for rotation about their axes.

  • Patent number: 4025060
Abstract: A molten metal pouring device is disclosed, wherein there are provided two pairs of link mechanisms whose links are adapted to be moved in parallel relation to each other, so that, regardless of an inclined angle of a ladle, a molten metal-dropping locus may follow a constant path when a molten metal is poured from a ladle into a mold. The molten metal pouring device equipped with these link mechanisms can be readily automated, as well as permits the reduction in cross sectional area of a sprue of a mold. Thus, temperature drop of a molten metal is avoided, with the result of production of castings of an improved quality.

  • Patent number: 3984613
Abstract: A direct arc electric furnace having a tiltable base for pouring molten metal from the furnace. A refractory lined hearth supported by the base is pivotal with respect to the base for tilting to a degree greater than that capable by the base. The furnace includes shell refractory lining material supported upon the hearth encompassed by a removable shell. Replacement of the shell lining is accomplished by removing the shell, collapsing the shell lining into the hearth, and tilting the hearth with respect to the base sufficiently to dump the collapsed lining from the hearth into the pit adjacent the furnace. Further, the use of the tilting and removable hearth permits the hearth to be removed from the base, inverted in the pit, and the refractory lining of the hearth may then be readily removed for replacement purposes.
