Abstract: A jaw is provided for a vise which includes a sloping surface for supporting a work piece at a particular angle. The jaw includes a primary mass and a secondary mass which are either formed together as a single unitary mass or formed separately and coupleable together. The primary mass includes a front surface which extends vertically and acts as a surface to hold the work piece within the vise. The secondary mass includes at least one sloping surface which is oriented perpendicular to the front surface of the primary mass. The sloping surface has an angle matching that desired for the work piece. A set of different jaws are provided with each jaw having a secondary mass with a sloping surface of a different angle. The work piece has a surface thereof resting against the sloping surface of the secondary mass of the jaw so that the work piece is held at the desired angle within the vise.

  • Patent number: 6641125
Abstract: A vise stop for positioning a workpiece in a vise includes a crossbar having a first end, a second end and a mounting surface. The crossbar is attachable to the vise and a first stop arm is pivotally connected to the crossbar first end for positioning a workpiece along an X axis. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, a second stop arm is pivotally connected to the crossbar second end. A friction disc is compressively disposed between an inner face of both the first and second stop arms and the first and second ends of the crossbar. The friction disc allows the stop arm to be frictionally positionable and rotatable about its point of attachment to the crossbar end. The friction disc may be configured as a fiber washer, a spring washer or a compressible o-ring.

Abstract: Vise jaw plates and matching work piece holders cooperate to reliably secure an odd-shaped object in a preferred orientation between the plates. At least one of a plurality of work piece holders are disposed throughout the jaw in a uniform orthogonal pattern with the plate holes precisely aligned in rows and columns and spaced apart a same distance such that a selected work piece holder with one or more mount posts matching the jaw holes is mountable equally well throughout the plate. The assembly of accessories includes a plurality of dowels, a pivot bar, a sine bar, a V-block, an arc block, a curvilinear side block, and a parallel keeper.

  • Patent number: 6578801
Abstract: A gripper or workpiece holder mounting bracket includes a center element and a pair of opposite end elements which are connectable to the center element via one or more fasteners. The mounting bracket defines a generally circular opening between the center element and one of the end elements and defines a second opening between the center element and other end element which has an arcuate or curved cross section, whereby a truncated spherical swivel member is pivotably secured therein when the bracket elements are secured together. The gripper or workpiece holder is pivotally secured within the generally circular opening, while the swivel member receives a generally cylindrical support structure therethrough. Adjustment of a clamping force at either or both of the openings of the mounting bracket may be accomplished via loosening of a single fastener.

  • Publication number: 20030098538
Abstract: A compound soft jaw for use in a machine vise has a replaceable jaw member into which the templates of the workpieces are cut. The compound soft jaw has a primary jaw member secured to a receiving plate of the machine vice. The first secondary jaw member is secured to the primary jaw member. The first secondary jaw member is machined to have a cutting template formed therein such that as the workpiece is secured within the machine vise, the workpiece is machined according to the template. Upon completion of machining of the workpiece, the first secondary jaw member is replaceable by a second secondary jaw member into which a second cutting template is formed. The primary jaw member has a height less than a height of the receiving plate. The secondary jaw member is placed on the primary jaw member and is forced into contact with a surface of the receiving. The secondary jaw member is then supported by the receiving plate, which prevents the secondary jaw member from movement during securing the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 6547259
Abstract: The jaw assembly includes a master jaw and an insert jaw. An engagement surface on the master jaw provides a mounting surface for the insert jaw. The master jaw is contoured to provide a minimum of mass opposite the mounting surface and opposite the engagement surface to minimize the total rotating mass when the jaw assembly is in operation. In operation, a force is applied substantially perpendicular to the engagement surfaces between the insert jaw and master jaw such that the engagement surface experiences the force rather than the insert fastener.

  • Patent number: 6485032
Abstract: A chuck has a chuck body adapted to be rotated about a chuck axis and a plurality of elongated jaw arms angularly spaced about the axis, pivotal in the chuck body about respective guide axes extending secantally of the chuck axis, and axially slidable in the body. Each jaw arm has a front outer end formed with a generally axially extending and radially inwardly directed outer face and an axially outwardly and forwardly directed inner face extending radially inward from an axially inner end of the outer face. Each outer face converges axially outward with the chuck axis and forms a small acute angle with the chuck axis. Respective jaw inserts each have a pair of faces complementary to and flatly engaging the respective jaw faces. These inserts are releasably secured to the jaw outer ends with the insert faces bearing on the jaw faces. The faces are planar. In addition each insert is formed with at least one throughgoing hole extending substantially parallel to the outer insert face.

Abstract: In accordance with this invention an eccentrically immobilized hinge-type device is provided having a yoke shaped hinging element with cylindrical peripheral surfaces and a channel shaped hinging element with an eye-ended connecting rod, and a relatively eccentric hinge-pin. The cylindrical peripheral surfaces of the yoke shaped hinging element seats in the channel shaped hinging element and both elements pivot on the relatively eccentric hinge-pin which penetrates the bore of the yoke and the eye-end bore of the connecting rod. The eccentric hinge-pin is connected to an activating means that controls the eccentrically applied tension on the connecting rod, consequently the friction between the cylindrical peripheral surfaces of the yoke shaped hinging element and the seat of the channel shaped hinging element, thus affecting hinging ability.
