  • Patent number: 4971301
Abstract: A vise having a fixed jaw on a body which has a base secured to a work surface and may be rotated through 180.degree.. The body has a guide slot formed therein and a movable jaw is slidably received in the guide slot. A guide rod is disposed through an opening in the movable jaw and is threadably received in an upright lug secured to the base for movement of the movable jaw. A positioning nut is keyed to the threaded guide rod and secures the movable jaw to the guide rod. The vise has clamp claws on the inner and outer sides of the fixed and movable jaws so that the vise can exert force in both directions. The workpiece may be clamped between the inner side of the jaws and the jaws may be adjustably disposed within the workpiece to secure the workpiece about the outer side of the jaws. The end of the movable jaw which extends through the body has a notched slot therein and there is also a notched recess in the body of the vise.

  • Patent number: 4958899
Abstract: A moving optical fiber (10) is guided in its motion by an annular guide apparatus (40) which receives the optical fiber (10) within an inner bore (66) and stabilizes its transverse position as it moves longitudinally. The guide (40) has a plurality of gas jets extending into the inner bore (66) that create a cushion of gas to maintain the position of the optical fiber (10) in the center of the bore (66), without the need for any physical contact between the bore (66) and the optical fiber (10). The annular guide (40) is preferably formed from a housing (42) that defines a gas plenum (74) and a flow control plate (52) that fits to the housing (42) and has circumferentially spaced, radially extending gas flow passages (54) etched therein. A gas flow introduced into the plenum (74) from an external source is distributed to the gas flow passages (54) and thence to the inner bore (66) to prevent the optical fiber (10) from physically contacting the guide (40).

  • Patent number: 4872654
Abstract: A work-holding implement for use in honing or otherwise machining the inner surface of a bore in a workpiece comprises a torsion-carrying spring band coil mounted at one end of a handle. Most of the inwardly exposed surface of the innermost turn of the coil is a gripping surface, while the remaining turns in the coil have smooth bearing surfaces. A workpiece is gripped by the innermost turn, and as an interior bore in the workpiece is being honed or otherwise machined, rotational torques exerted on the workpiece by the machine tool cause the coil to become more tightly wound around the workpiece. As the workpiece is being worked on, the tightened coil bears against a planar segment of the spring band forming part of the implement and deforms it into a curved surface conforming to the workpiece surface over which contact is made.

  • Patent number: 4666138
Abstract: A pipe clamp for use in welding together a pair of pipe sections having confronting ends adjacent one another comprises arcuate jaws together forming a generally circular body of such diameter as to encircle the pipes with adjacent ends of the jaws spaced by a gap. A force generating jack is carried by one of the jaws adjacent the gap and has a radially reciprocable member to which is secured one end of a flexible force transmitting member which spans the gap and has its other end secured to the other jaw. The force transmitting member is trained around a force conversion member carried by the one jaw which converts radial force to circumferential force enabling the gap to be closed. The jaws are provided with cooperable guides to maintain those ends of the jaws adjacent the gap in circumferential alignment.

Abstract: An improved adjustable candleholder (10) that allows candles of various diameters to be secured within the candleholder. The candleholder (10) is comprised of a base assembly (12) having an upper section (12a) and a lower section (12g), and a candleholder mechanism (14) that is secured within the upper section (12a). The mechanism comprises a pinion gear (17c) that operates three rack gears (16b) that include a vertical clamping segment (16d). The segments expand and retract to increase or decrease the clamping diameter. To operate, the lower section (12g) is held stationary while the upper section (12a) is rotated to increase the clamping diameter of the mechanism. A candle is then inserted and the upper section is counter-rotated until the clamping segments (16d) grip and secures the candle. An adjustable candleholder mechanism insert (50) is also disclosed that operates independently from the candleholder base.

Abstract: A fixture apparatus for forming a board on board fence or similar article comprises two angle frame sections which are pivotally secured to a base section. Each frame section can accommodate boards which are arranged in the vertical plane and also include means for accommodating stringers which are arranged horizontally and overlie the vertical boards. The frames can be moved in a first closed position where the stringers are emplaced between the boards and, in this position, are nailed to the boards. In a second open position the frames are moved in a V-shaped configuration. The nailed board and stringer assembly is held in the vertical position by means of a holding bar attached to a vertical beam emanating from the base. The fixture also includes an exit bar associated with a series of rollers to allow the completed assembly to be rolled from the fixture.

  • Patent number: 4621821
Abstract: The invention provides a clamping apparatus, particularly for receiving and clampingly retaining electrode body blanks having prismatic or circular cross section for erosive machining devices. A clamping block has at one of its surfaces an essentially centrally arranged clamping chamber to receive the electrode. Two adjacent walls of the clamping chamber are provided with clamping screws protruding into the clamping chamber. An approximately central position of the workpiece in the clamping chamber is achieved by the provision of distance plates with preselectable thickness, which are inserted into the clamping chamber between two walls thereof and the surface of the workpiece, before the workpiece is clamped by tightening the clamping screws. This clamping apparatus is inexpensive and rugged, so that the electrode, once machined and used, respectively, may always remain clamped and therefore may be used again with a very high precision as far as its position is concerned.

Abstract: An apparatus for in-situ crankshaft reconditioning includes a bracket connectable to the crank webs of crankshafts of a variety of sizes and configurations. The bracket includes a set of adjustably spaced, two contact point corners which are in turn connected to a set of four spaced vertical posts. The elevation of the corners with respect to the posts is adjustable. A pair of axially spaced apart annular rings are slideably connectable to the vertical posts so that their position in a direction transverse to the length of the crankshaft may be adjusted. A pair of orbital wheels are mounted on the annular rings and the precise positioning of the wheels with respect to the rings is manually adjustable through cam members. A mounting bracket carrying a machining head rotates with the wheels. The position of the machining head is adjustable in at least two dimensions with respect to the position of the orbital wheels.

Abstract: A molecular beam epitaxy system wherein the molybdenum substrate holder and the molybdenum ring which assembles to the substrate holder to hold the wafer are kept in vacuum essentially all the time. Wafers are not pre-mounted to substrate holders, but the wafer mounting step is performed in ultrahigh vacuum after a cassette of wafers has already been loaded and outgassed, under ultrahigh vacuum. Thus, the substrate holder can be outgassed separately at high temperatures, and can remain under high vacuum.

Well centered hole units are punched and secured in a container provided with grooves, said holes being aligned, whereafter the container is filled with material for moulding-in the hole units. Thereafter the hole units and filling material are milled down to alignment with the centers of the holes, and the material is milled down additionally around the holes so that the hole unit centers have raised portions. The raised portions comprising the hole plating are thereafter ground and the latter can be examined. The invention also concerns apparatus for performing the above-mentioned method.
