Abstract: Embodiments of welding work cells are disclosed. One embodiment includes a workpiece positioning system, a welding power source, and a welding job sequencer. The workpiece positioning system powers an elevating motion and a rotational motion of a workpiece mounted between a headstock and a tailstock to re-position the workpiece for a next weld to be performed. The welding power source generates welding output power based on a set of welding parameters of the power source. The welding job sequencer commands the workpiece positioning system to re-position the workpiece from a current position to a next position in accordance with a next step of a welding sequence of a welding schedule. The welding job sequencer also commands the welding power source to adjust a current set of welding parameters to a next set of welding parameters in accordance with the next step of the welding sequence of the welding schedule.

  • Patent number: 7047706
Abstract: This patent relates to a machine that automatically assembles, inspects, and packages disposable prophylaxis angles. The machine includes a movable table including a plurality of fixtures on which angle components are assembled and the assembled angles are inspected. The movable table is surrounded by a number of stations, each of which performs a different operation of the assembly and inspection procedure. Feeders automatically supply the angle components to their respective stations for assembly. Angles that are incorrectly assembled are automatically rejected. Properly assembled angles are automatically sealed in individual bags. Individually bagged angles are counted into batches by the machine and automatically sealed into cartons.

  • Patent number: 6859989
Abstract: An improved fixture and method for assembling a structure, wherein the improved fixture comprises a frame and a pair of position compliance devices. The compliance devices are attached to a selected one of the ends of the fixture frame for engagement with the arms of a selected one of a headstock and a tailstock used to rotate the fixture and structure to be assembled. The compliance devices each comprise a slidable block having a locating pin rotatably mounted therein, which enables the fixture to be accurately and removably positioned between a headstock and a tailstock, serving to reduce unwanted stress on the fixture and the structure to be assembled during rotation. Removability of the fixture and structure to be assembled facilitates convenient loading/unloading of the structure and 360 degree access to the structure and fixture by an operator.

Abstract: A method for aligning head suspension structures minimize to misalignments between a flexure and a load beam of the head suspension. The load beam and the flexure of the head suspension include a first aperture formed near a load point dimple of the head suspension to provide a reference datum. An elongated alignment aperture is formed in the rigid region of the load beam, and a proximal alignment aperture and a distal alignment aperture are formed in the flexure. The elongated the aperture overlaps at least a portion of the proximal and distal alignment apertures in such a manner that the proximal perimeter edge of the elongated aperture encroaches on the proximal alignment aperture and the proximal perimeter edge of the distal alignment aperture encroaches upon the elongated alignment aperture.

  • Patent number: 6619640
Abstract: The present invention relates to a vehicle component support carriage for maneuvering heavy engines, transmissions, or vehicle rear end differentials while those components are being serviced. The apparatus includes a wheeled carriage that supports an enclosed drive apparatus used to incrementally rotate the heavy component for servicing, replacing parts or cleaning the component. The apparatus support apparatus is arranged so that a removable portion of it is aligned and secured to the first engagement member before the heavy component is assembled to the wheeled carriage on a journaled shaft that is operatively connected to the drive apparatus. The removable portion of the support apparatus is pre-disposed with a pattern of mounted apertures or hardware that will present a balanced assembly when loaded on the carriage support apparatus. A second variation enables servicing of two engines at once, both engines being balanced and supported similarly.

  • Patent number: 6539606
Abstract: A metal ring having a greatest circumferential length is held in the shape of a substantially true circle, and other metal rings are arrayed in the order of increasing circumferential length toward the metal ring of the greatest circumferential length. At least three holder rods are lowered into the metal rings to hold the metal rings in substantially coaxial alignment with each other. Presser rods are pressed from outside of the metal rings toward the center of the metal rings, thereby deforming the metal rings into a shape including curved portions projecting radially and having a reduced diameter. The deformed metal rings are delivered successively in the array from terminal ends of the presser rods into the metal ring of the greatest circumferential length. The deformed metal rings that are released off the presser rods restore their original shape within the metal ring of the greatest circumferential length, and are laminated to the metal ring of the greatest circumferential length.

  • Patent number: 6528124
Abstract: A first disk carrier constructed in accordance with the invention is substantially circular, and has a size and shape such that it can be placed in an opening in a second, larger disk carrier. In one embodiment, the second, large disk carrier is a conventional disk carrier, e.g. used to hold a substrate during a magnetic disk manufacturing process. The first disk carrier is circular, and has a diameter equal (or substantially equal) to common substrates currently being manufactured. Therefore, the first disk carrier fits in and can be held by the second disk carrier. The first disk carrier has one or more openings for holding one or more substrates that have a diameter substantially less than the diameter of the opening of the second disk carrier.

  • Patent number: 6342138
Abstract: An electroplating rack includes a cathode flight bar from which depends an insulated rack bar over an acid bath. A clamp is fixed to the rack bar, and has a bridge electrically connected to the flight bar through a conducting core inside the insulated rack bar. The clamp has a main body made of plastic, which includes a slot in which protrudes the bridge. An electrically conducting spring clip is installed in the slot, and is formed of two arms continuously biased into a spreaded, opened condition in the slot. A screw carried by the main body, when rotated in a first direction, can force the spring clip into a closed condition, in which it can hold an article to be electroplated between its two arms, and in which one of the spring clip arms is forced against the bridge member. Thus, electrical current can pass through the rack flight bar and conducting core, then through the bridge member, the spring clip and finally into the article to be electroplated.

  • Patent number: 6283464
Abstract: An adjustable tooling pin for a bed-of-nails test fixture used for testing circuit boards (cards) is provided which allows the tooling pin, and thus the card, to be precisely realigned while the card is still mounted in the test fixture. The adjustable tooling pin mechanism comprises a pivot bushing having a channel running from end-to-end into which a slide bar fits. The tooling pin projects from the end of the sliding bar in the z-direction such that a card may be located over the tooling pin. A locking screw fits through an aperture in the sliding bar and the pivot bushing and is threadably engaged into a threaded insert in the test fixture top plate. Hence, the tooling pin, and thus the card, are radially adjustable in the x-y plane by turning the pivot bushing and by sliding the sliding bar along the pivot bushing channel.

  • Patent number: 6262582
Abstract: A fixture to hold an electronic substrate having probe areas on a top surface. The top surface of the electronic substrate is left open to provide a maximum area to couple interconnect wires for a device under test. In addition, a bottom surface of the substrate is left open to provide a maximum area to couple with a probe card in one embodiment, or a test head in another embodiment. This open bottom and open top minimize the mechanical interference with electrical connections. The substrate is planarized to a frame by one or more clamps that are attached to the frame. The clamps provide adjustment of the pressure down on the substrate in a Z-axis direction which is normal to the top surface of the substrate for providing a good connection with a planar card. In addition, the clamps provide adjustment in the an X-Y plane parallel to the frame and rotational correction about the Z-axis.
