  • Patent number: 7857297
Abstract: A transport system for conveying sheet material along a feed path. The transport system includes an electro-dynamic propulsion system for moving sheet material, or a stacked collation of sheet material, along a support deck which defines the feed path. More specifically, the electro-dynamic propulsion system includes at least one guideway and a ferromagnetic element disposed internally of the guideway. The guideway includes a magnetic coil to produce a variable magnetic field. By varying the flux density and polarity of the magnetic field the ferromagnetic element may be propelled within the guideway. An abutment member is coupled to the ferromagnetic element, extends through the elongate opening of the support deck and engages an edge of sheet material. A processor is operative to control the electro-dynamic propulsion system and, accordingly, the rate of travel and position of the sheet material along the feed path.

  • Patent number: 7850158
Abstract: Folded printed products (6) are supplied with trailing fold-edges (6.3) from above towards a clamping gap (1) and are pushed out of the clamping gap (1), in order to be deposited on, for example, saddle-like supports (7). As soon as the leading edge of each printed product (6) exits from the clamping gap (1), the printed product (6) is opened by two printed product parts (6.1 and 6.2) being separated from each other, and the opened printed products are positioned above the support (7). Gripper elements (11) are provided for gripping the trailing fold-edge (6.3) of each printed product (6), before it exits the clamping gap (1), thus preventing a free fall of the printed products (6) onto the support (7) when the trailing fold-edge (6.3) exits the clamping gap (1). The gripper elements (11) grip and guide the printed products towards the support (7). If a plurality of supports (7) is provided, and these are conveyed continuously and in succession past, below the stationary clamping gap (1), the fold-edges (6.

  • Patent number: 7494117
Abstract: A device for gathering signatures, positioned straddling, into printed products such as newspapers, magazines, and brochures includes a conveying arrangement that has a saddle-shaped gathering section, and at least one signature feeders. The at least one signature feeder is arranged along the gathering section and are respectively controlled via a motor with the same or changeable angle of rotation and are driven cycle-synchronously with the conveying arrangement. For this, the signature feeders are connected detachably to a machine frame that accommodates the conveying arrangement.

  • Patent number: 7490821
Abstract: Two folded and printed products (11, 12) are introduced into a pocket-like holding compartment (1) with respective ones of their side surfaces resting against each other and are moved in such position jointly along a processing section in a direction running transversely with respect to the folded edge. In the course of this movement, the printed products (11, 12) are displaced in opposite directions (H, I) relative to each other in the direction of their folded edge and toward opening elements (7, 8). The opening elements (7, 8) move between the two halves (11a, 11b; 12a, 12b) of the two printed products (11, 12) and have the effect that the two product halves (11a, 11b; 12a, 12b) are lifted off each other. Inserts are then inserted into the printed products (11, 12) opened simultaneously in this way. In a second embodiment, first and second clamping fingers (107, 111) act in conjunction with a pivotable separating element (113) to open the two printed products.

  • Patent number: 7458566
Abstract: The invention relates to a book block clamp (1) for clamping and transporting book blocks (2) in book block processing machines, comprising an inner clamping jaw (5) and comprising an outer clamping jaw (6) which is arranged parallel to, and movable in relation to, said inner clamping jaw (5). A support element (20) is associated with the outer clamping jaw (6), which support element (20) can be moved into a position that is spaced apart in parallel in relation to the outer clamping jaw (6), as a result of which the opening width of the book block clamp (1) is reduced, while the distance between the inner and the outer clamping jaw (5, 6) remains unchanged.

  • Patent number: 7451969
Abstract: To optimize the effort involved when converting a gatherer stitcher which transports initially continuously transported brochures step by step into a stitching station and subsequently into an output station, sensors are assigned to machine components affected by geometrical parameters that are relevant to the process when there is a change of job order and to a reference component. The sensors emit signals defining the phase positions of the machine components, and a controller processing the signals coordinates the phase positions with at least one of the parameters in such a way that the brochures arrive in the output station in a center-oriented manner.

  • Patent number: 7431275
Abstract: For supplying individual quantities of flat and in particular diverse part products to a serial further processing, the part products are arranged in a row of part product groups (7) in a preparatory step carried out before the supply step (e.g. supplementation), and the row (2) is fashioned into a “first-in-last-out” storage formation, such as a roll (5). Within the row (2) the part products or the part product groups (7) overlap or are spaced from each other. For stabilizing the part product groups (7), adhesion between the part products within the groups may be enhanced; for stabilizing the storage formation, the part product groups (7) may be reversibly connected to each other. For supplying the groups to the serial further processing, which may succeed the preparatory step at any time or place, the storage formation is dissolved and the part product groups are supplied to the further processing directly from the storage formation.

  • Patent number: 7431277
Abstract: A device for collecting printed sheets in a certain sequence astride and atop one another to form a printed product has a saddle-shaped support supplied by a sheet feeder with printed sheets. The saddle-shaped support is arranged above a conveying device transporting the printed products to a further processing step. The saddle-shaped support has a circulating traction mechanism and driving members connected to the circulating traction mechanism. The driving members act on the printed products to convey the printed products in a direction parallel to a conveying direction of the conveying device.

  • Patent number: 7422203
Abstract: In order to produce final printed products (14) in the same compartment (12), a first product for insertion (22) is inserted into a first folded printed product (10), and a second product for insertion (28) is inserted into a second folded printed product (24). The printed products (10, 24) are displaced in the direction of the folds (16), and as a result each of the printed products (10, 24) has an edge section (26) projecting beyond the other printed product. This permits fault-free, simple access to each of the printed products (10, 24) by grippers (44, 46) respectively positioned adjacent the end regions of each of the compartments and which are configured to open the products for insertion (22, 28).
