Above the chassis, document feeders release documents to the chassis to form the collations. A set of horizontal photo-sensors is positioned below the document feeder at a level substantially even with the tops of the pusher fingers on the chassis. The photo-sensors detect lead and trail edges of documents traveling in the flight path from the document feeder to the chassis. The sensors generate signals representing the lead and tail edges of documents breaking the line between the photo-sensors. A controller receives the signals from the photo-sensors and compares them to an expected profile calculated as a function the parameters of operation for the chassis and feeders. An error signal is generated when the compared signals are different from the expected profile by greater than a predetermined margin of error.

Abstract: A sheet transfer apparatus for an image reading apparatus includes a sheet supply tray for storing a sheet; a sheet supply device for drawing out the sheet on the sheet supply tray; a transfer device for receiving the sheet from the sheet supply means and placing the sheet at a predetermined position on a platen of an image reading apparatus for reading the image thereon; a discharge device for discharging the sheet on the platen after reading the image thereon; and a discharge tray for receiving the sheet discharged by the discharge device. A switchback device is disposed above the platen for reversing the sheet when necessary, and includes a switchback path for receiving the sheet to reverse the same. The switchback path includes a first opening portion for opening a first area near an inlet side, and a second opening portion for opening a second area away from the inlet side of the switchback path. The switchback path is easily accessible when the sheet is jammed.

  • Patent number: 6474884
Abstract: The present invention provides a paper tray for a printer or a like device that includes both means for holding paper prior to printing thereon, and means for receiving paper exiting from the printer. In this way a single paper tray can both supply to and receive paper from the printer, and therefore it is only necessary to provide access to one side of the printer in which the tray is inserted. The printer may therefore be incorporated as part of a stack of other electrical/electronic items such as audio-visual equipment.

  • Patent number: 6403906
Abstract: Method for controlling an accumulating device (buffer) having a number of tracks each of which defines at least one accumulation segment along which may be arranged sets of postal items partially overlying each other (shingled). One first section and one second section are defined as including, respectively, one first and one second sub-set of tracks designed to communicate at output, through singling devices, with sorting devices. For each section, successive phases of accumulation and unloading are carried out, thus achieving with great efficiency the unloading of postal items towards sorting devices, and thus enabling the handling of a large number of postal items towards the highest possible number of destinations.

  • Patent number: 6337451
Abstract: A method for clearing outputs of a mail sorting machine concurrently with a current sorting cycle of a mail sorting process is disclosed. At each sorting cycle, each output of the sorting machine is assigned a number of respective delivery locations of the mail items. An indication of the time intervals when the outputs are available or unavailable, is represented by a matrix. Each element in the matrix is assigned a delivery location; and the column and row of each element represents the outputs occupied, by the mail items bearing the delivery location assigned to the box, at the end of the current sorting cycle and the logically preceding sorting cycle respectively. The method provides for defining non-addressable elements to which delivery locations cannot be assigned, so that the outputs may be cleared by a clearing resource at that time.

  • Patent number: 6254078
Abstract: An ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) for an image forming apparatus includes a drive roller and a driven roller constituting document send-out means located downstream of a contact glass for sending out a document. The driven roller is movable into and out of contact with the drive roller. The driven roller is spaced from the drive roller when a document sensor does not sense the arrival of the leading edge of the document at the document send-out means. When the document sensor senses the leading edge of the document, the driven roller is moved toward the drive roller in order to convey the document in cooperation with the drive roller. The ADF insures accurate reading of the document without varying the document conveying speed at an image reading position.

  • Patent number: 6203003
Abstract: An original carrying apparatus includes a separation unit for separating one original from a plurality of stacked originals, a carrying roller for carrying the original separated by the separation unit, a carrying belt for receiving the original carried by the carrying roller, and carrying the originals in a state where the plurality of originals are being held, wherein the carrying belt carries the original such that the original passes through an exposure position at a first speed, and a control unit for performing control to set an interval between the two originals carried by the carrying belt to be a first distance. The control unit performs the control to set the interval between the two originals to be the first distance after setting it to be a second distance shorter than the first distance, by using the carrying roller. Further, the control unit accelerates the carrying belt up to a second speed, decelerates the second speed to the first speed to set the second distance to be the first distance.

  • Patent number: 6193229
Abstract: A signature feeder for delivering stacked signatures to a conveyer or gatherer includes a variable speed separator disk for separating signatures from the stacked signatures. The separator disk mechanically couples with a servomotor. The separator disk has a blade with a leading edge and a trailing edge. The servomotor accelerates the separator disk through the stacked signatures to separate signatures from the stacked signatures. After a signature separates from the stacked signatures, the servomotor slows the separator disk.
