The preferred embodiment consists of a stationary retainer ring with a groove for an O-ring adjacent to a bearing housing, a rotating mating ring with a groove for a second O-ring adjacent to a rotating shaft, and a floating ring made of a material with a low coefficient of friction and a low elastic modulus. The cross-section of the floating ring can be Z-shaped, U-shaped, or V-shaped. A C-shaped locking ring is used as an aid to assemble the aforementioned seal components into a module and is subsequently removed after the seal is installed. Contaminants are stopped at both ends of the floating ring as well as at the O-rings by their spring action. The seal is also designed to release pressure built up in the bearing lubricating system.

The rotor includes an elastic impermeable diaphragm which defines at least a portion of a variable-volume processing chamber, where the fluid is centrifuged. The rotor includes a rigid mounting member, to which the diaphragm is mounted and which is held and spun by a chuck. Preferably, this rigid mounting member includes a boundary wall which together with the elastic diaphragm defines the chamber. The boundary wall may be a substantially imperforate circular wall which extends to the periphery of the processing chamber but defining one opening, preferably near the axis of rotation, permitting a conduit or conduits to pass therethrough so as to be in fluid communication with the processing chamber. The rotor may include a separate structure for controlling the flow of liquid out of the chamber into the conduit.

    Abstract: A seal for sealing a low pressure area from a high pressure area for containing a process fluid. The high pressure area is located along a rotatable shaft extending from a machine body. The seal includes an outboard seal positioned along the shaft, and an inboard seal axially spaced along the shaft from the outboard seal. An annular chamber is defined between the inboard seal and the outboard seal for containing a buffer fluid. The inboard seal includes a stationary assembly attached to the machine body. The stationary assembly includes a stationary seal ring having a stationary sealing face, and a first secondary seal between the stationary seal ring and the housing. The inboard seal further includes a rotating assembly attached to the shaft. The rotating assembly includes a rotating seal ring having a rotating sealing face in sealing relation with the stationary sealing face and a second secondary seal between the rotating seal ring and the shaft.
